SoccerAmerica (@socceramerica) 9/9/13, 6:47 PM Friday's Mexico-Honduras broadcast averaged 3.9 million viewers on UniMas, third most viewed broadcast ever on network.
You can tell ESPN loves the audience totals when they want to flash right to SportsCenter at 10 to piggyback off the ratings lead-in.
Considering the Mexico-Panama game winner will get 4th place it should get good ratings. Wonder how ratings will be in the World Cup if Mexico doesnt qualify which seems really likely if almost certain if the lose their next game.
They'd be down on Univision but wouldn't effect ESPN - which is set for a ratings bonanza. The World Cup is much bigger in the US than just Mexican diaspora viewing. Plus people watch the tournament not just their team - the Spain-Holland final is the most watched match in American history -- not one featuring Mexico or the US.
I think Mexico not qualifying would impact the ESPN ratings significantly. And of course would be a disaster for Univision.
I totally disagree with this assertion. The WC brings the core, the casual, and those that might not even follow Soccer in this country. The Mexican diaspora in the US is not going to boycott the WC. Yes, you might see some drop for Univision ( a decline of 10-20% could be in the cards). However, @ESPN you are not going to see much of an impact. ESPN will see an additional 25-40% increase in TV ratings for Brazil. The fact that the US made it to the Finals is more important for ESPN than the Mexican team. But, let's not forget that the Final between Holland vs Spain drew almost 25 million viewers on ABC & Univision. In summary, the WC total audience reach is growing, and most of the audience is going to be there regardless of the US and Mexico participation. But in the same token, the US participation allows ESPN to penetrate the market even further which will impact the bottom line. For the Mexican diaspora, just like the US followers, they will chose to follow other teams like Spain or Portugal or Italy. The WC is much bigger than it's parts.
Won't affect ESPN at all. Not a drop. The Liga MX matches on ESPN have totally bombed, being almost the lowest rated programs on the networks. Spanish viewers simply don't watch English lanaguage soccer on ESPN in any real numbers. This will be an obvious blow to Univision though in 2 ways: 1, they miss out on probably 4 extremely highly rated games(assuming Mexico gets to round of 16) 2, they miss out on some Mexican fans being interested in the WC in general via their National team and watching other games I think you could see as much as a 20-25% hit, depending on how big a factor #2 turns out to be. I know it would never happen but it is fun to dream that Mexico misses the WC and suddenly a segment of its US fan base (say the younger generation) turns to support the US.
steve lepore 783,000 viewers tuned into ESPN's one-hour USA-Mexico pre-game show. USA-Mexico drew 2.24 million viewers on ESPN last night. Just shy of the 2.39 million for the game at Azteca in March.
damn! With the higher household rating I thought they might have a show to break the viewership number.
I wonder if the president's speech (on three major networks) bumped the number ever so slightly down.
If anything, this http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013...on.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter Good observation...But, I'm more disappointed in terms of how ESPN is reporting this number. I don't understand their strategy in terms of counting numbers starting at @7:41 pm EST. The match-window was between 8:00-10:00 pm est. In a ideal setting, ESPN should have reported the real numbers. But, ESPN pushed the match-window to 7:40 in terms of reporting. In reality, what we got was an extension of pregame festivities that started at 7:00 pm est. The First kick was at 8:06 pm EST. Plus, it was 5:00 pm on the West Coast when many are still trying to get home. I think a 9:00 pm est would have been an ideal setting, and with the first kick around 9:15 or 9:25. To suffice, the biggest culprit was the way the game was reported.
Here's how the ESPN broadcast stacked up against the rest of cable on Tuesday... http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...world-cup-qualifiers-amish-mafia-more/202076/ Top program on cable between 7:30 and 9pm. Not bad.
https://twitter.com/SoccerMarketer/status/378148592860426240 Between @ESPN and @UniMas 10 million people tuned in to watch #USAvMEX
Is that some sort of peak number? We know the average was less. By the way, this is the guy who used to be an MLS GM.
ESPNFC ratings update Last week's Friday edition, averaged about 247k on ESPN2 (WCQ night for both US and Mexico). I'm impressed with these numbers. The late Sunday night edition on Sunday night following a low rated MLS telecast averaged about 50K
NBC Sports Network (NBCSN), FOX Sports 1 and 2 ratings (September 2-8, 2013) http://sonofthebronx.blogspot.com/2013/09/nbc-sports-network-nbcsn-fox-sports-1.html 103k for Seattle-Chicago last Saturday. Ouch. I know the time slot is not ideal and Dempsey did not play, but a Monday 3pm Premier League replay beat it. As did a MOTD replay. I don't know when MLS is going to get it going on TV -- and when they're going to start avoiding international fixture weekends like a league that wears big boy underpants.

I'm surprised Arsenal-Tottenham got more viewers than Liverpool-Manchester United and Manchester United-Chelsea.
