Rosenberry with a great pass to set up Allen but then misses an open net on the rebound. Dunseth bitching about the referee again.
At the half from Des Moines: Tulsa 2, Drake 0 Shots: TU 12, Drake 6 Corners: TU 7, Drake 3 Fouls: TU 4, Drake 3
With Stanford pushing forward late, Allen got a chance to break in all alone but didn't take it particularly well. Hutchins slowed the shot down, but either Neumann or Allen cleaned it up. 2-0. Congratulations to the Hoyas, but despite going winless this weekend, Stanford looks like it'll be a very good team this year.
Cal Poly dominating possession but a turnover in the back and a goal for Creighton in the 36th minute.
Marquette followed its loss to Milwaukee with a 3-3 tie with Green Bay. Very disappointing start for them. UC Riverside freshman Romario Lomeli with a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Marist. He also scored UCR's only goal on Friday. UAB followed its impressive 4-0 opening scoreline with a 5-1 over High Point today. Xavier lost its second straight, this one 1-0 to College of Charleston. Duke beat Northeastern 2-0 for its first win, and soph Zach Mathers was named MVP of the John Rennie Classic. In the other game, Rutgers lost to Elon 2-1.
Read the match summary on NIU website. NIU hit a crossbar, hit a post and missed 2 pk's to lose 2-0. Now that's a coach's nightmare.
Drake attacking trying to get back into the game, but it's Bryce Follensbee scoring for Tulsa in the 73rd minute. 3-0 Tulsa.
Odd day for Chandler Gagnon of Memphis. He scored a solo goal in the first half but got his second yellow early in the second half. Cal St Northridge pulled ahead 2-1, Memphis then had another guy sent off, and now it's 3-1 late.
Creighton scores off a free kick and header from outside the box. Lots of falling down by Creighton players. 2-0 Creighton over Cal Poly in 57th minute. I should note that it appears Kody Wakasa is playing CB which I have never seen him play before. He was the DMid last year. Holocher still tinkering with that back line.
Final Score from Des Moines: Tulsa 3, Drake 0 Shots: Tulsa 19, Drake 12 SOG: Tulsa 7, Drake 6 Corners: Tulsa 12, Drake 7 Fouls: Tulsa 10, Drake 10 Saves: Tulsa 6, Drake 4
Memphis goes down a man in the 46th min and down another in the 64th min. CSU-Northridge scores 4 goals after man advantages to secure a 4-1 come from behind win. Lev-Ari with a hat trick.
Final Creighton 3-0 Cal Poly. Creighton took advantage of every opportunity. They were much better than CP in the second half. Final stats: Shots: Creighton 10-7 Cal Poly SOG: Creighton 5-3 CP Saves: Creighton 3-2 CP Fouls: Creighton 5-6 CP Corners: Creighton 5-2 CP
Wild one being played in San Diego, as FIU leads SDSU 3-2 after 55 mins. At the end of the first half, Maryland transfer Gonzalo Frechilla had a goal and two assists in the space of five minutes.
Ended 5-3 to FIU. Coming off of a huge 5-0 win over USD, this was an obvious trap game for SDSU to suffer a letdown. And of course, they did. Every generation of kids makes the same mistakes.
Yeah, but SDSU started 8 seniors and 2 juniors and the only underclassmen was a freshman from Sweden who turns 20 in a couple months. In other words, this is a pretty seasoned, mature group by college soccer standards. They should have the mental toughness to avoid trapdoors. BTW, does anyone know what the deal is with Julio Alarcon? He came to SDSU from the Salt Lake academy very highly regarded and then redshirted last year and didn't play in either game this weekend.
UNC beats Coastal Carolina 4-0 in Chapel Hill this morning after the match was cancelled last night. Nothing doing for either team for the first 65 minutes of the game, then UNC scored off a corner and Coastal's defense imploded while they tried to get forward. Maybe the best offensive half of play for the Tar Heels since the 2011 season. And for those who don't know, Lovejoy and Craven (the team's two leading scorers from last season) are out for the season, which makes the result today look a hell of a lot more impressive.
SIUE starts season out with two wins out west. Herman Award nominee Christian Volesky nets 3 over the weekend.
Wow. Northwestern escaped an embarrassing tie with DePaul, winning 1-0 when freshman Brandon Medina grabbed a goal with 10 seconds left. For its own part, West Virginia failed to avoid embarrassment, tying 2-2 with Radford. After a promising start, Marlon LeBlanc doesn't seem to have taken the Mountaineers very far. For more embarrassment, Boston College trails Quinnipiac 2-0 at the half. And of course, Quinnipiac is one of several programs that are an embarrassment regardless of their results. If all you're going to do is load up on foreigners, why bother fielding a team at all?
