it's the $$$. i think. the economics of women's soccer is such that any player not making extra bucks from playing in the u.s.a. (for ex. solo, abby, alex) is going to grab any reasonable offer to play overseas rather than sit on their hands during the nwsl off season. these players lose their income making playing skills before they're 38-40. the one thing they ALL know and live by is the theme of making every dollar now while their knees and ankles are not shot. there'd be more of this if more overseas teams had $$ and spots available. right now, even with nwsl's paltry salaries, no worries.
Ok, now that everyone have expressed their opinion on this, can we discuss the logistics concerning the move? Namely, Who has the rights to Rapinoe? Seattle or Lyon? If it is Seattle, does that mean this is a loan to Lyon and Seattle will be compensated? I guess my main concern is that I find it hard to believe that Seattle, after signing a coach to a 4-year extension, would allow it self to be screwed for the second year in a row with this allocation stuff. I must say the coming months should be fun as I'm hoping the rules concerning allocation is further ironed out.
Going back through this thread: From that press release: "...The team also officially announced the signing of Megan Rapinoe from Lyon...." And earlier: [/URL]http://www.une-deux.net/OL-Rapinoe-part-mais-revient_a2224.html which got it right from the horse's mouth (last night's itw on OLTV) pinoe has signed for next season at OL. she'll be in Seattle on the 14th and play her first match on the 29th. guignol, Jun 11, 2013 Was she actually this year on loan from Lyon? Or was the contract with Seattle for only this past season? Even if it had an option for second year, does she have to actually sign it for it to be effective?
all very good questions. i'm not saying my answers are perfectly correct but: 1) as you can see in the OP of this thread she signed with OL before being allocated to seattle. 2) if i understand allocation correctly she is not under contract to seattle at all but to the USSF. so she was under contract with lyon from december until the end of their season, at which time she was free to go play the remainder of the reign's season. now she's resigned with OL and though she was excused from camp in the alps to take a breather she should be back in france in time for lyon's first match on sept. 1. if she goes back to the NMSL it will be under the same circumstances, startting in june.
thx for the info. she'll likely have prior permission for that and not get fined as such. but as this match is not being held during an official NT break lyon is not technically required to release her.
her fb page? https://www.facebook.com/mPinoe ? i don't see it. and i doubt the club would let her do that without a fuss, as that's after the juvisy match and would hamper her preparation for PSG.
Sorry, forgot to post the link https://www.facebook.com/RapinoeSoccerCamp Could have swore I read a few quotes from Lair stating they expected her back toward the end of September. If I can dig them out, I'll post them.
i found that page myself, but didn't see where it says megan will personally be there. a camp can be called RSC without her being there, just like joe weider didn't come over to your house if you sent in the coupon in the back of the comic book. anyway, this from https://www.facebook.com/ReignFC answers some of our questions here: Below are a few excerpts from an interview with Reign FC Owner Bill Predmore regarding Megan Rapinoe’s return to Lyon: WHY DID REIGN FC AGREE TO LET RAPINOE GO TO LYON? The structure of the league allocation process meant that Megan had no further contractual obligation to Reign FC, so from a legal perspective Megan didn’t need our permission to return to Lyon for their upcoming season. Reign FC controls Megan’s rights in the NWSL (meaning she doesn’t have the option to play for a different NWSL club unless we first agree to a trade), but we do not control her rights outside the NWSL. For obvious reasons we would have preferred she play in Lyon only until the beginning of March (the start of our pre-season camp), but we were not in a position to make that happen. DID THE CLUB ASK MEGAN TO STAY IN SEATTLE? Laura and I spoke with Megan on multiple occasions to discuss her motivations for playing in Lyon. It was clear she had spent a lot of time considering her choices and she had very clear, rational and completely understandable reasons for wanting to return to Lyon. We certainly asked her to stay, but understand and support her decision to return to Lyon. i certainly hope she will be back asap but ultimately seeing will be believing.
Thanks for showing me this. From the answers, it seems their hands were tied to do anything which is unfortunate but hopefully this allocation stuff will be worked out better in the offseason. Now its time to start speculating on who they are targeting both in NWSL and overseas.
And also because Rachael Rapinoe will probably be there... since the camp is run by both of the Rapinoe twins.
Well according to this tweet from the official camp twitter acct, it kinda implies they will both be there. "Looking forward to our summer camps with @RRapinoe and @mPinoe!! Email rapinoesc@gmail.com for all info"
"Sept 14 in Santa Rosa, CA @ Montgomery High School. Training sessions are as follows: U8-U13 9am-12pm, U14-U18 1pm-4pm. Both training sessions will end with a 30 minute Q&A, for a chance to get to know Megan Rapinoe on a personal level. You can email all Santa Rosa RSC questions to: rapinoesc@gmail.com. " I guess her sister can host the Q&A session about Megan. Anything is possible
If you want to hear Laura Harvey's thoughts on Rapinoe going to Lyon in the off-season: It starts about 29:00 min in: http://soundcloud.com/wfpod/donkey-of-the-day She thinks it will benefit the club long-term and said it would be difficult for any player to turn it down. It is a great interview overall; she also gives her thoughts on the NWSL season, the award winners, etc. (41 minutes in). I recommend a listen.
the first word from OL on just when pinoe will be back: « Elle reviendra plus tôt que prévu parce que j'ai besoin d'elle plus tôt. Je l'ai eue au téléphone. Elle peut être présente pour le match face au PSG. » intimating she was indeed only expected back at the end of September (in the same article lair explains the whole team started preparation later this year because they haven't had a real break in 3 years) but will be back earlier because he needs her: he talked to her on the phone and she "may" be back for PSG.
isn't that just coach speak? he has more than enough ammunition - pinoe, from reports you guys gave, seemed to be little more than window dressing last season.
Why isnt this thread called "Rapinoe reportedly to sit on the bench for Lyon"? Again, I dont see the attraction. Other than having a world class player sitting about in case Abily gets injured, what is Rapinoe doing there? Is there some allure to being a bench player on a CL league contender? At least she's learning a new language.
she didn't sit the bench as much as you think once she got acclimated. and now abily is out for 6 weeks. next question?
Who else is out? Le Sommer? So Rapinoe is in til Le Sommer returns? Maybe the two of them will do the 45 minute dance like last year? It shouldnt take Abily getting injured for Rapinoe to play. It's the same old argument. Rapinoe is too good to be sitting on the bench sticking pins in the Abily voodoo doll. If she isnt good enough to start on Lyon she doesnt need to be there.
except they're paying her good window dressing $$, which few players can afford to pass up. mystery to me. she can start for the uswnt, but she can't even see the pitch some games for lyon. maybe she's just not showing much in practice. my theory - coach sees everything i don't. so he has the right to make the call.
Well I agree the money is a factor...Id rather have her just say that...the nonsense about winning CL...she is only winning CL if she is playing and contributing. As to whether or not she's better than the players she is behind, I dont see that as a factor either. The argument isnt whether she deserves to start...that's completely opinion with any player. The argument is it's year two. They may have been a bit surprised last season with what she can and cant do...how she fits or doesnt. Not this year. They knew exactly what they were getting and Rapinoe knew exactly what she was getting into. I still read this as Trophy Wife. And the trophy wife thing bothers me when u look at from the Seattle POV.
