To be fair, what sporting director would even consider this worth their time? Just a few months ago Klinsmann was aggressively telling him to join a team of higher prestige or shut his damn mouth, why in the world would anybody assume that just a few months later he'd be open to an MLS move?

Plus, can you imagine the shitstorm from the rest of the league if we signed him without making him go through the allocation process? We all know this whole "DP exceptions for returning Americans" nonsense was something MLS made up on the spot yesterday to make this deal happen.

The allocation process is a joke and frankly I wouldn't care what the rest of the league thought of us. A lot of them probably don't like NY anyway.

Ugh. So jealous of Seattle right now.

Imagine how fine will be to develop a kid in a great player if we give him a chance to play, we will not loose anything on trying that must probably we will end winning a lot, comparing the cases of a lot of players that has come here like Juninho to do nothing and at the end they left us and in the worst condition that when they find us when they come, because they don't do anything and at the end we have nothing to show, and no hope to show anything because we have no body to help us, because we never develop that player.....

No, I will not halloo for him or any other player that left us to start, if he come I will try him like any other foreign player, because he now come with a pedigree of grandiose and splendid, so he has to live to that fame and beside he is on route to Soundersland......

    Developing a kid into a great player...hmmmm...

NE developed Dempsey. He left them with no championships only to come back years later to the Sounders.

RB developed Tim Ream and offered him a big contract upgrade, but he left them with no championships.

Not everything works out the way you want it.

And yet he still only cost them 350k against the cap and has at least 3 more years of very good soccer in him. Pretty good business if you ask me.

yeah good deal for sounders, they can make the money back easily, and the cap hit is fixed.

really hope Ream considers coming back, maybe if cap is adjusted after next season. Not starting in the championship is definitely worse for his USMNT hopes than playing in the MLS.

Ream pretty much has zero chance of joining the national team by next summer at this point regardless of where he's playing, he might as well keep making money over in England.

After the Sounder don't capsize they resources to develop player because they are paying 8/9 million a year salary to Dempsey, I will love you to ask the fan how good they feel.... And if is because only he is cost 350 to the CAP ask the owner of the team how much it is cost......

They're developing probably the best American right-back prospect in DeAndre Yedlin at the moment.

I think the fans will be fine.

And he'll probably leave for Europe in 2-3 years max.

You were loving NE earlier this season and their GM just said that he and the rest of the teams in the leauge will be brining in more talent from outside the U.S.

    http://www.soccerbyives.net/2013/08/dempseys-return-surprised.html

New England Revolution General Manager Mike Burns:

“I think we’re going to need to [bring in more high-profile players]. I don’t want to say that lightly, but the Commissioner [Don Garber] said last week that we want to get to 24 teams, and that’s not going to all come from (the) academy. It’s not going to all come from domestic players,” said Burns. “You’re going to have to have international players, and I think you’re going to see more higher-profile players come into the league over the next five to 10 years for sure.”

Like it or not most teams in MLS are going to continue to look outside the U.S. for players.

He will still be developed at Seattle Sounders which is basically the point.

Makes you wonder how Japan, with 18 teams in the J. League and 22 in their 2nd Division are able to create a good, solid league (better than MLS in my opinion) while sticking with the low foreigner rule.

My limited understanding of the J league is that as soon as it started up they invested a LOT of resources getting academies up and organized and pumping out players. Also, they brought in a LOT of foreign coaching so that technical skill on the ball became a hallmark. They also don't have to cover nearly the amount of ground our scouts do.

MLS took way too long for academies to start up. Only a few clubs invest real money in them (Red Bull being one). Some areas of the U.S. just aren't scouted appropriately. Coaching still isn't good enough.

When all these things improve? Good lord, look out. We are still the sleeping giant of the soccer world.

Agree. We were slow to start Academies but were able to keep up with these nations in not only league but international level as well. Once we see more advancements in the way coaching is done (specially in terms of licensing structure), and more Academies from MLS, NASL, and USL Pro clubs in the majority of America then yes... like you said... look out.

I thought Agudelo is out of contract at the end of this season? If that's the case then it's a free transfer and we get NOTHING.

This unfortunately is the case, there is talk of Stoke paying a transfer fee to get him there over the summer instead of waiting until January, but the fee is described as "modest" so I wouldn't hope for much. On top of that, we only get a fraction of the fraction that MLS gives as allocation money when a player is sold, assuming of course that this part of the Pearce trade remained in effect after Agudelo moved to NE, something nobody has been able to clarify.

Basically, this move is either going to make no difference to us at all, or an inconsequential one.

EDIT: Of course just as I write that, EOS puts out an article providing some more details:

    http://www.empireofsoccer.com/report-red-bulls-set-to-profit-from-agudelos-expected-stoke-transfer/

I'm pretty shocked that we'd take over 50% of any potential allocation money. Maybe we can get a useful bit of allocation after all, just have to hope Stoke wants him badly enough. Props to Soler for making sure that we get our dues for bringing the kid up through our academy.

The league will work with NE and Stoke to make sure he goes on a transfer fee. MLS, NY, Chivas, and NE don't all want to get screwed. They all have/had some financial stake in his development.

My question at this point is whether NE even wants to sell him considering a) how desperate they are to make the playoffs, b) how much better they are with Agudelo in the team, and c) that the transfer fee will only be a "modest" one. And if they don't want to sell, can/would MLS force it through anyway?
