Parkhurst and the US Team got some coverage in the local paper. There were a few mentions here and there during the tourney, and this is article on the win in the Final, now Parkhurst was the only BL player, he played 90 minutes, Klinsmann was suspended and Herzog was on the sideline... http://www.augsburger-allgemeine.de...-mit-Klinsis-US-Boys-Gold-Cup-id26433806.html
I did just find this http://www.augsburger-allgemeine.de/wertingen/sport/Weiter-warten-auf-Parkhurst-id26210036.html It talks about the team is waiting on Parkhurst because the US is doing well in the GC. Coach Weinzierl: "Good for the player, not for us." I am reading it is a grumpy coach in the preseason who is dealing with injuries, roster construction, etc. Hopefully Michael can hit the ground running. The cup tomorrow and then the season starts next Saturday at home against Dortmund.
I still feel it's highly probable that Parkhurst was using the Gold Cup as a showcase for himself and that he moves on before the window closes.
The Gold Cup is not any kind of showcase for getting a new European club. I'd assume Parkhurst knows this.
One coincidental incident does not make a truism, sir. Friendlies and general CONCACAF games mean all but nothing to Euro-scouts and directors. Promoted teams certainly are not going to make decisions on EPL signings based on player outings against the likes of Belize, El Salvador, Canada. Even if you were correct in linking the two, the big difference is Feilhaber "did his business" in a game against Mexico - quite the different animal, especially back then.
Wasn't Feilhaber already in Europe when he scored that goal against Mexico in 07? I seem to recall he signed after 05 U20 WC.
Or at least remind his current club that he's still an option.....there's a reason they bought him in the first place.
Yeah, he said no one found a 'new' club in Europe because of the Gold Cup, he was wrong. Benny had been at Hamburger since '05 (moved in part due to U-20 WC performance) and was struggling to find first team opportunities. Benny's play for the NT during the summer of '07 caught the eye of Billy Davies, the manager of then newly promoted EPL side Derby County. Not long thereafter Benny was on his way to Pride Park. Now I don't know if Davies was aware of Feilhaber prior to the Gold Cup but I explicitly remember reading during the time that Feilhaber's play at the Gold Cup is what prompted Davies to look into the possibility of acquiring Benny. So this wasn't something I just pulled out of my ass, as the poster seems to be suggesting.
What clubs could Parkhurst head to? He'd probably only start for relegation fodder clubs and be depth for mid-table clubs. He must be making a pretty nice amount at Augsburg. Should stay and force his way into being a starter. He has a chance at making it to Brazil, but probably no chance of him making it as a starter either way.
If he were to start at Augsburg he would certainly have a chance to start in Brazil. In all the games i've seen him play for the US in this cycle i can't recall him struggling defensively, which after all is the first and most important aspect of his job. We started Jonathan Bornstein in a few games at the last world cup and if Michael Parkhurst was the worst of our starting XI players i'd be just fine with that. Of course his role is more dependent upon the play of Chandler and Dolo in this next year but that isnt to say he couldnt play his way into a big role. Perhaps unlikely but not impossible. A lot can change in a year.
Bornstein only started because Gooch was ineffective after the Slovenia match and Bradley didn't believe in Goodson taking that role, so he slotted Bocanegra to be the CB paired with DeMerit freeing up Bornstein to take the LB role. I was shocked he didn't start Spector. Though Bornstein did very well.
Parkhurst I think is just having a bad go of it. I think he has some quality and when his confidence is high and in form he does not put a foot wrong often. He is no game breaking offensive player but he can get a cross off now and then and hold his own against non-elite competition. Of course those guys would not be elite if they could held one v one against lots of people so I can live with an in form Parkhurst, especially if Geoff is not playing RB for Stoke. Augsgurg is looking like it might not work out, but it is a loong season and a lot of things can happen between now and the transfer window. If he gets on the field he has to make his case there and train like his future depended on it.
I don't know why you guys are so quick to demand moves to different clubs for our guys when things don't go so well or even look like they might potentially go bad.
Not sure how you figured I was suggesting all that. In any event, is this the Davies comment you were thinking of? "We're bringing in another very good young player with excellent potential who is growing in stature with his national team. I believe he is ready for the challenge of the Premier League." If so, that's not exactly supporting evidence. If not, feel free to post it.
In general, I agree, I think people have knee jerk reactions when players don't instantly lock down a starting job. I would say Parkhurst should stay and fight for a spot, however...if he is still riding the pine come the new year, he should seek a loan. It will be a World Cup year, and I want our players playing. The US right back situation is still quite unsettled. Cameron playing out of position there for Stoke. Chandler has been unreliable. Cherundolo is injured and old. And in our recent qualifiers, Klinsmann turned to an out of position Evans over Parkhurst because Parky wasn't match fit. I don't want the same situation happening next year.
If I remember, he's also fighting the club captain for a starting spot. In that case, he'll have to be significantly better. Captains don't get deposed very often without losing said captianhood (captainship?). IE, It's probably more likely he moves than he wins the starting spot, injury aside. In general, I agree that it's annoying to read the constant "he needs to go to x league" mental mastrubation posts.
Parkhurst made the bench but didn't play in Augsburg's 0-2 win at RasenBallsport Leipzig in the DFB Pokal.
Fighting for a spot is the best thing that you can do when in a situation like this, but he's also fighting for a starting spot with the USMNT. If he wants that spot, he needs to be playing regularly. In a World Cup year, it's crucial for the guys competing for spots to be getting regular club playing time.
Parkhurst should have moved to Spain, as I said back then ... He had trouble as a centre back in Denmark, because he is not that physically strong, but he was excellent as a right back for a not very physical team that was playing "Barcelona-style" short passing, but where to find such a team in Germany ? ...and that would be interested in Parkhurst ? ... a mid-table Spanish side would be much better for him than a bottom team in Germany that need to go physical to survive. .
RB Leipzig are in the 3rd Liga now and with the monetary backing of Red Bull will probably be in the 1. Bundesliga in the next 5-6 years.
