He had some chances and nice dribbles into the center, but like everyone else I think his legs were tired and he couldn't get the separation or quite put the zip on the shot he needed to put it away. I like his positioning, but everyone looked about 90% the whole day, and TSV looked tight with each other. Werder had some opportunities but just couldn't put them away. I really like Petersen and Fuellkrug and they are pushing each other.

They had a 2 hour training before the game so who knows how adversely affected they were by that.

Werder lost 1-0 at VfL Osnabrück (3. Liga). Dutt fielded today no new signing, in the first half Osnabrück was the better team and went in front after 30 minutes. Nice attack over VfLs left flank, good cross and they scored with a header. In the second half Werder was the better team, but failed to score the equalizer.

Mmh, Osnabrücks season starts (as well as 1860 Munich, the last test where we played draw) 3 weeks earlier than the BL season, but Werders players had this time a day of rest.
One could see in both last test matches that Werder has problems to create chance when they try to stand solid in defense. This weakness could already be seen under Schaaf for some seasons, but that is where Dutt must react. The team must create chances even if it stands solid and not switch to the harakiri style (we witnessed for the past seasons) when they need a goal.
One way to archieve this is either teaching the midfielder, especially Hunt and Ekici (from the AM), to control the ball faster and play passes quicker, or singing or loaning a capable playmaker. Since Özils departure that is a big weak point at Werder.

Thanks EE for the detail and yes, for the love of GOSH we don't need a coaching change...we need a playmaker . I don't care what position he plays but give me something with substance, something I haven't seen before!

Some news about Frings "good bye" match in September. Thomas Schaaf will coach the former Werder players team, while the other team with players from Frings time at BVB, Buyern and the NT is coached by Sammer (who was Frings coach at BVB) - arrogant brat, but a bad boy is needed.
Other prominent players being there are e.g.:
Fabian Ernst, Paul Stalteri, Julio Cesar, Ümit Davala, Johan Micoud and Marco Bode for Werder old-stars (I meant allstars ;) ); Oliver Kahn, Roman Weidenfeller, Lothar Matthäus, Michael Ballack, Lars Ricken, Christoph Metzelder for the other team.
20000 tickets are already sold, so there should be a good atmosphere. :)

Today Werder lost 2-3 to Zwolle. No offense, but if Werder continues to play like this they are a relegation candidate. :speechless:

Well, you`ve lost your two best players De Bruyne and Sokratis and have only bought 29 year old Makiadi. I dont think the expectations should be high. What do you expect ?

I expect that Dutt adopts a working system, improves players and establishes Werder in the midfield.

I expect they will be be relegated...should have been last season but even losers can be over-achievers sometimes. It will be a loooooong time before this boat floats again so we're just hoping for any old twig to hang onto in the meantime. About expectations: good observations, though it sounds a bit like peeing on a drowning man.

    Personally I think we're going through stage-three denial...its 2004 and Bremen's in first place :p

    I expect 12th to 16th position.

I believe Eintracht Braunschweig are an awful team. Probably as bad as Greuther Fuerth were this past season . 18th for sure.
I heard good things about Hoffenheim's coach but they havent really strengthened. I think they could struggle again.
    Freiburg obviously should really struggle.
Nuernberg will have a poor season IMO.
Frankfurt can really struggle in the league while playing in Europe and with a lack of a quality striker.
Augsburg obviously will be down there.
Hertha have a lot of promise .... I think they can have a decent season.

I think you should finish ahead of Braunschweig, Augsburg and Nuernberg. Dont know about the rest.

    10th-15th position for me

lost 2-3 to Ajax today. The result in and of itself is not a terrible one, considering the nature of the game, but our lack of defensive improvement is worrying.

    Fritz doesn't look good.
Mielitz is not a 1.Buli level goalkeeper.

Füllkrug had a nasty move to get a shot that was blocked that set up the Akpala goal. I mean real nasty. Trybull looked good in midfield; he had a nice pass to set up the that first goal. Gebre Seleassie also was coming up and crossing ala Euro 2012. Iggy had a great move on the 18 yard box, and I saw some good things Harthertz and Proedl too, Akpala had some good things to show besides his goal. Petersen was doing lots of things outside the box which was good to see had a very good cross to almost set up another goal in like the 70's.

So consider what you witnessed Bud'n, how would you have placed the offensive line-up? Fulk up top with or behind Peterson? Maybe Fulk onn a wing or the lone CF? I saw Trybull's first game for us on wing and I agree he has some potential there. No comment on Astro? And how's the World's Biggest Loser Aaron Hunt as a senior member of this struggling young team? Invisible. I didn't even have to ask - ya he will score 10 goals this season but so will half of the players in the Bundesliga!

Defensively, I remember Sellasie fits the attacking winger role but pays no attention to his defensive responsibilities (we already knew that last season). Fritz sucking is a concern because the nature of the game demands Werder have a shutdown defensive right fullback 90% of the time and that leaves Iggy, the only player that ever showed any aptitude in that role besides the increasingly impotent Fritz. Leaves them kinda thin at left fullback and who the @#$%^&* is the real team captain? Poop la Merde, its musical chairs again! What has happened to a once great defensive team (pre c. 2000)?! Proedl will likely start ahead of Luca Brasi given his age, his standing with the organization and potentialy can score more goals a season than Aksnakadiksak.

Meilitz - a sock puppet. Need I say more?

I was hoping to hear some brighter notes boys and/or girls but this confirms the worst. It appears they are content to build from within and take a long approach. I mean we're not stupid (ok I am stupid), but there are plenty of oppurtunities to make bold moves. I suppose we will have to wait and see if they can improve the depth of the roster (never mind fill about 6 starting jobs AND FIND A NEW CAPTAIN).

You all can say what you like, THEY NEED TO SIGN SOME TALENT LIKE NOW!! I think when you achieve near relagation is a bit like sticking your fingers in the light socket; but doing the exact same thing two years in row you're pouring honey on yourself and sitting nuts-down on an anthill.

They were playing a 4-1-4-1 at the end, with but really more like Fullkrug was up top of Petersen most of the time. It looked way more dynamic, and they were holding and pushing much better than the first half. We had better more and more on the young guys mixed in as the season starts, this veteran stuff isn't going to work.

Now that I had time to read the Werder.de side of the Ajax game, I think thats likely the formation they will use (4-1-4-1) and loan Kroos to return as Fredi's successor. I'd like to see the 2 strikers (1 high 1 low) on tape because the Peterson/Fullx combo has me thinking thats the chemistry they need.

I only hope that from now on if Werder goes all young, the deBruyne's of this world are convinced that Bremen is a place to stay and all these pretenders just clear out already, cause thier just eating up resources better spent on quality players.

I take back what I said about Hunt btw, I always lose my cool with this guy but there's no reason in calling him names..he is what he is.

The De Bruynes of the world primarly sign where they can expect glory (chances for titles, CL participation) or money. Bremen won't be more than an intermediate step club.

What we need is a basis of players loyal to the club, that support the clubs mentality and the coachs tactics. Once we will have this basis again, we will have success, become attractive for high-profile youngsters and "problem players" will likely cause less trouble. :) Up to the point the club management gets this done, we fans will have to suffer. :(

I mentioned a few weeks ago (maybe towards the end of last season?) that Fritz doesn't seem to have the pace to be a starter. He's almost guaranteed a spot in the starting XI because he's the captain, but I think he weakens the team when he is there. Though it should be said that the team was at its most stable when he was playing left back last season.

We have too many players, and too many of them ineffective. I prefer us playing a 4-1-4-1, since it gives us a lot of attacking options--but so far the team hasn't done much with those chance. Ideally, I'd like to see Elia-Yildrim-Fulkrug-Juno lining up behind Petersen. But obviously that won't happen, since, like Fritz, Hunt is almost guaranteed a starting position. (And I say this as a long time supporter of Hunt!) We do need a really effective playmaker, though... Otherwise, we'll really need strong play from the wings, and Petersen will need to be almost perfect.

Generally, pretty dissatisfied with the club's performances and management's transfer activity.

Yeah, Clemens is sadly not the old Speedy Firtz anymore. Nevertheless he has a lot of experience and that is also important especially with so many young players.

Dutt did many experiments to learn how his players react. But yeah, it is time to select players and get results to collect some self-confidence before the 1st round in cup and the BL start. About the rooster, loan deals must be done and Eichin should look for some interesting deals. Maybe he finds a good deal like De Bruyne ( sad boy got injured today in a Chelsea friendly :( ) last season.

Its a good thing, that so far, the only serious injury has come to Schmitz. I know when there are starting positions up for grabs the pre-season can be contentious and cause all sorts of poor decisions that lead to injuries. This is going to be an epic first rounder in the DFB Cup and I can't wait to see what Dutt rolls out come that day.
