Yeah, Lamela and Messi could play together but who gets left out? Messi and Kun partnership is important since they feed off each other? You sub out your 9? Di Maria? Messi-Lavezzi-Coco all worked well together. We have seen Kun be taken out for Pocho, so does Sabella replace Pipita for Lamela? That wouldn't really work in a more competitive game, would it? That would mean the front shifts quite a bit. Sometimes having too many options is more of a problem than a blessing.
not long ago we had the same "worries" about having Messi and Aguero together Sabella fixed that and I give him credit the criticism here is his cowardly use of subs and alternatives when the starters arent available Lamela could come in for whoever is under performing or when Di Maria runs out of steam in the 2nd half

Oddy enough sometimes team that needs a play off usually played well in WC, like Brazil in 2002 and Uruguay in 2010. Even Argentina in 1994 before Diego suspension.
