"Frank Yallop said today there is "no chance" of Simon Dawkins returning to #sjearthquakes. "[Spurs] want a big fee and we don't pay fees."

PATHETIC. We condone doing the absolute minimum! Way to go, Frank! That winning attitude will take us far!

MLS as a rule doesn't like paying fees, it's not really Quakes-specific. Sure, some stars coming over had to be bought, but, many more come over on a free.

Needless to say, I am a bit disappointed with Spurs. Dawkins was a nothing before the Quakes took him on, we were the ones who created any value he has. You would think Spurs would take that into consideration. I certainly hope some other MLS club doesn't try to sign him.

Well, that totally contradicts what Kaval told me a few weeks ago at a game when I asked about Dawkins' availability. He said that Simon had signed a new contract with Spurs. (Even though I could not find a single reference anywhere to support that.) I guess Kaval was a bit confused.

P.S. Nice "partnership" with Spurs we have going, really working great.

P.P.S. I'm on the Fire Frank bandwagon yet again.

I also think that Yallop may have been playing a "woe is me" card, possibly even subconsciously, to deflect blame from his team's poor performance. "It's not that I'm not a good coach, it's just that the FO won't get me the players I need" kind of thing.

Aston Villa opts not to continue Dawkins' "low cost" loan, Spurs don't have first team plans for him, he desperately wants to play ... yet he still blindly goes in for an 18 month contract extension? Or is it an entirely new contract? And didn't Spurs already have a 12 month renewal option? Maybe it was all conditional on Aston Villa extending his loan? Something doesn't seem right and I'm not so sure this story is over.

I just think Kaval was confused, but, he did say, "new contract with Spurs". Maybe he was thinking about the one Simon signed before.

Paying fees for players is generally a bad practice, so yeah, the league as a whole generally likes to avoid it when possible, I think. Tottenham looks like it was just trying to gouge the Quakes because they were in a good position to do so. Probably not a good long term decision because if things were to go the other way and Tottenham saw a player from the Quakes that they wanted, I doubt San Jose would make it easy for them to get them. Obviously Tottenham would have to go through the league, and I don't know how much input the individual teams get, but it could get ugly. Might as well cut ties with Tottenham and refocus efforts on finding local talent.

So is his contract actually up? Don't understand why Yallop would say that if so.

Dawkins' old contract with Spurs is supposedly until the end of June. The question is whether or not he has already extended, renewed or signed a new contract with them. It might be in Frank's interest to be coy about that.

Why? Don't we own the MLS rights to him?

It's a testimony to how poor MLS is that a player that made one substitute appearance in like 10 or 12 games for a team that struggled with relegation the entire season is so converted by an MLS club & made such an impact in our league but cant even get in the team of a struggling EPL side.

So wouldn't someone by now (especially someone in the UK media) have already picked up that Dawkins is headed back over here?

No, it isn't. He was a loaner to Villa and they probably thought that giving minutes to their own players should be a higher priority.

News articles out of the UK today confirmed that Villa won't be using him next year.

And FWIW, I still couldn't find anything online about a contract extension. I even checked his Twitter feed. as far as I can tell, his Spurs contract ends at the end of this month.

Jonas just "twattered" that Yallop said he'd not pay a fee for Dawkins but would sign him as a free agent. Whatever that means.

It means if Dawkins actually played American football and not soccer, and Yallop was a football coach, he'd sign Dawkins if he became a free agent. :--)

    from mlssoccer.com

Also, former San Jose Earthquakes midfielder
    Simon Dawkins
, who was on loan to Villa, will leave the club and return to his parent club Tottenham Hotspur, at least momentarily.

Dawkins is a bit more of a "left field" case than Beasley or Lichaj. In two seasons on loan to the Earthquakes, he scored 14 goals and notched three assists — respectable numbers, considering he started 40 games. The Quakes were disappointed to lose him in January when he moved to Villa on loan, but the allure of playing in the Premier League was obviously too much to pass up.
He then made four substitute appearances for Villa, tallying a grand total of two shots on goal. If the Quakes are in the market for an impact attacking midfielder, and their current MLS standing indicates they very well could be, the agent of Dawkins might be the first call head coach Frank Yallop makes.

Well how come's Spurs didn't use him then it that case? He's there player, he's not a loaner at Spurs. First they loaned him to us & then they loan him to Villa & he's been on loan at several other clubs in the UK, in the 3rd division.

He's a very good MLS player that's all I care about, I'd like him back but I doubt it.
There are a million Simon Dawkins in England, players that come thru the youth/reserve system of big EPL teams that cant make the first team because of high price international superstar players, Bostock is another example, it didn't work out in Toronto but you see what I'm aiming at.

Also, if we put in a "good offer" for him last winter - notice we don't know what that was because nobody ever reported it - why are we not willing to pay any transfer fee for him now? What's changed?
