So, are we Red Bull fans taking on the Manchester rivalry due to City coming to NY? I may end up moving to the Manchester area soon and have been trying to figure out who to follow. United, City, Bolton, Wigan? This new development effectively puts City in the "no" column. Do I go for their biggest rivals? What I want to know is, how many of you have a stake in the United/City rivalry? Does Red Bulls/NYCFC change this or maybe strengthen this? On a related but fun note, we should take on the United song "We hate Nottingham Forest" and insert our rivals. "We hate DC United! We hate the Union too! We hate New York CITY! But Red Bulls we love you!"
I have always been a United fan, the ironic part is that one of the main reasons for that was all the games I could watch on the YES network back in the day. That and when Howard moved over to them, really sealed the deal for me. Anyways, just my opinion but I really don't think it sounds right to say 'we hate new york city", even though I get your intention. I think all chants/songs should only refer to them as "City" alone. Seems fitting as a lot of people do that for Man. City; but the main reason is I think it could be viewed as some what of a slap in the face to never refer to them as "new york". Especially since they are going to try to come in and claim the NY turf. We should not acknowledge them as NY anything ever. I know I don't determine these things, but that would be my preference.
I suppose we could sing "We hate Manchester City" as an underhanded dig at the fact that they are of a franchise of a real team. That brings me back to my original question. Does CityFC'S introduction to MLS have any effect on your views on Man U? Also what are your thoughts on Wigan and Bolton? Both would be far cheaper to watch and I could cheer for them to make it into the EPL. I would feel like a hop on if I root for Man U. I could never hop on the Yankees bandwagon after moving out here. Does anti-CITYFC legitimize my claim to Man U?
This Red Bulls - City rivalry currently means less to me than our "rivalries" with Galaxy and Philly. But knowing MLS, the league will force the rivalry and act like it compares to Celtic - Rangers or United - Liverpool. That being said, I have no strong feelings either way how we act when we play City.
Just watch the team that you enjoy watching, simple as that. At the end of the day the sport itself is what matters, not the rivalries or bandwagons or any of that.
I disagree strongly. I have plenty of friends who are Union fans and we are always up for those games. I already don't like City FC because of what I fear it will do to the Red Bulls. So, I don't care what the league does, I care about the rivalry that will exist quite naturally.
Soccer is about soccer. Support is about soccer and community. I can watch any time I want on my tablet. But as soon as I open my mouth to talk about the team, it's about more than just the sport. It's about way more. I can despise Donovan. But when he put the ball into the top of the net against Algeria, I went crazy. Because of what it "meant". So it does matter to me. As will the rivalry.
This rivalry is going to be dogshit when NYFnCFC can't score a stadium deal and they end up plying at RBA
As someone who is living in PA, I too have a lot of Union/Philly fan friends and we always make it an event to watch when our teams play when they face each other. But that doesn't make it a rivalry, it's just a coincidence our teams are playing. Rivalries are more than just cities being in close proximity. They don't appear overnight. They take years to arise after several dramatic, crucial, and/or controversial games played. A perfect example would be SKC and Houston or NY and DC. It will be years before anyone outside of MLS' marketing department actually considers RBNY - NYCFC to be a rivalry.
You could go the organic route and support the club with the stadium closest to your "flat", as they call it. Let the proximity decide.
Erm, take a long hard look on what colours people wear in the area you are supposed to live in..It might make things so much easier.
Well, he might live in a house I as well..But basically in the Gtr Manchester area you´ll only find Wigan and Bolton fans in Wigan or Bolton while United and City fans are roughly divided in a East/West direction. That said United fans outnumber City fans in general but believe me, you wouldn´t like to live in say a United hardcore area like Salford or a City stronghold like Moss Side
Why, oh why, do we have to import some rivalry from two teams in England I don't even care about? It's bullcrap, I tell you. We have one of the most heated/passionate rivalries already established in the MLS. If you don't know who it is, you are not a seasoned Red Bull fan. If you do know who it is, you should understand that we don't need to manufacture any others. Look at Philly. When they joined the league, they were supposed to become a big rival. All they are is a team followed by schmuks (one of which still owes me lunch for a friendly wager made on the last game.) I think I'll start my own rivalry against people who want me to start new rivalries. I'll go to their houses and light flares and smoke bombs, and chant "I am great, you are shite" and pretend I've seen Green Street Hooligans about a thousand times...
Given the nature of man, there will be opportunities enough to see a real rivalry grow so yea, you are correct..well put
No, make up your own song. There's too much importation of chants and songs into MLS as it is. Difficult to believe MLS fans can't come up with quality original stuff.
Thank you. I am so sick of hearing "We love ya" "Take em all" and now "Just can't get enough" in every MLS stadium.
MLS needs to understand that rivalries are born organically. You can't force it down people's throats. Especially in the North American sports landscape. The Lakers-Clippers rivalry isn't considered a big rivalry by any means, even though both play in the same stadium. For this rivalry to truly be big, it needs epics playoff battles, fights, media drama, hated characters. I advise everyone to watch the ESPN documentary about the Pacers v Knicks rivalry. It shows you how rivalries are naturally made, and how compelling it is to watch them unfold.
I agree, but if this NYC vs RBNY thing develops into a real bona fide rivalry..Few would be disappointed I guess?
I really don't like City cause of the oil money from mideast. So if I picked between U/City, I'd go U. As for rivalry with NY2, that will take a while for it to really happen. Just not liking them cause they are close by is not a rivalry.
Its like Devils/Islanders. Thats not a rivalry. Toronto at one time was a rival. We played them a lot and Domi is a scumbag hitting Neidermayer.
