Oh I see..they should just pretend to be all about Man City USA just because. I got news for you man, NYCFC is seen as a ********ing joke here. Major soccer bar here, who's owner bartender has been going on about hoe NYC needs their own team for the last 7 years today said to me...this is ********ing bullshit..no one is supporting this, myself included. This is a guy that has like 20 clubs come in on a daily basis. Make fun of me, whatever, but im telling you as boots on the ground in NYC...this new club is not being well received.
Then make it well received, work with the ownership group, shape their thoughts on what they want the team to be like. City have already come out and said it will be an independent organisation (although what that means with the City branding on their website is another matter), the Yankees are also no mugs. It makes more far sense to work with them and get a top class side than sit on the sidelines, having 1/2 seasons of NASL soccer and then watch the Cosmos collapse while NYCFC establishes itself as the second long term MLS team in the area. Aside from the name, NYCFC has the potential to provide everything the Borough Boys have ever asked for, on the flip side aside from the name the Cosmos are providing nothing.
Excuse a non American but I don´t really get it... Cosmos fans are angry because their club was not given MLS status, that I can understand and even symphatise with and there could be loads of reasons why. But they still got their club, they are fans of an existing club even if the connection to the original Cosmos is kind of weak. Where does New York City enter the picture?
When u want to see how people can be manipulated, through their own supposedly pure thought processes, all u have to do is look at the BB's. This is what politicians, dictators, extremists dream of. Easy as pie.
They didn't want specifically the Cosmos. Their angle since they formed was that Red Bull wasn't a NYC team because it wasn't based in the city limits. They ended up supporting the Cosmos group because they were promising NASL football and ultimately MLS, despite the fact that everyone said they were dreamers with no links to get that achieved. Now this has come truth and the Borough Boys have what they always wanted (despite many communities having no team anywhere near them, let alone 2) and they're standing aloof because the team's name isn't Cosmos. It's just odd when they have this great potential to shape a team in the form of NYCFC. The hint is kind of in the name 'Borough', they weren't formed for the Cosmos, they were formed for a NYC borough based team.
I don't really get where all this falth in the Cosmos is coming from. The "team" (such as it is) exists to sell t-shirts. The Cosmos have made a lot of promises, but with few actual results.
This BB stuff is hilarious. What a bunch of too cool for school hipsters prancing about. I know you guys get off on being contrarians but you need to realize you got what you were supposedly campaigning for. An MLS club in NYC. A real MLS club and not some retro fad t-shirt brand 2nd Division joke. I also find it amusing that in BB pretzel logic there are no objections to the Long Island Cosmos being foreign owned but OMG Man City owns NYCFC.
Cheers for the clarification, Well..I´m fairly optimistic that NYC will win them over in the end. If the modus operandi from Manchester is copied there will be exstensive research into what local fans really want. There was a time two years ago when you could see tattooed guys with scars all over their faces panic when ambushed by research teams wanting to question them about their "matchday experience" ffs! As for the local barstoolers or what you call people that just watch profile games in some more snobbish league it´s a potential but rather limited market. Even if say Man United fans will surely be curious about the Man City connection. Perhaps even curious enough to attend some games to see what it is all about. In particular if one of their old heroes turn up.
I hate to say it but it seems like the City team is mostly being seen as a commercial venture and not as a soccer team. I haven't yet met anybody who is excited by the prospect of another marketing department running a team in NY and I've spoken to a bunch of people who are put off by it. I think that if a person wasn't intrinsically offended by a marketing department running a soccer team, they'd already be Red Bull fans. That's just anecdotal and it's still two years off and lots will change but Chivas City USA NYC seems to me like a phenomenally bad idea. Having said that, I'd be shocked to see the Cosmos exist in 2015 and the idea that people who wanted a NYC team so desperately will support a team in Long Freaking Island is just a joke. A Gallagher joke, not even a real joke.
Marketing what exactly?.. You might as well claim that Abu Dhabi bought Man City to market some Abu Dhabi brands like Etihad or Etisaalat and it might be partly true, but does it change anything really? What if this NYC venture in the long run comes to rival or even overshadow MCFC itself, or if NYC suddenly starts up a club in say China..Shanghai City FC You might laugh but this organic growth thing might very well be that the clubs themselves are expected to recreate ad infinitam
Props to BBs for withholding their support for a New York City MLS marketing stint owned by an Arab Sheikh, and instead supporting an NASL marketing stint owned by an Arab Sheikh on Long Island. Bravo.
Why what? I'm undecided on whether I've already given you more time than your semi-literate ramblings indicate you deserve.
LOL. MFCF spent more money transfering and signing Kim Aguero than it did investing in MLS. Overshadow MCFC...that's rich. You dont invest or buy RC Cola in order to promote it above Coca Cola when you already own Coca Cola.
No one wanted Red Bull lite or Chivas USA lite and be told they MUST support this new franchise simply because it met their broad criteria of being an "MLS Franchise" in "NYC". To you they should just suck it up and "shape" a club that simple does not speak to them , or countless new yorkers involve din actually having to put that emotional time and effort in. BB made thier choice, there in nothing much to say beyond that. It sounds more like other fans are just upset that they are shunning it, when other markets would have loved to get a team (and BB would agree that you should have gotten the team), but getting a team and being forced to "support" a team that is a Man city branding effort are not the same.
