Oh, is that all? I don't know if you'd noticed but MLS doesn't routinely attract players of that calibre at their respective stages of career. Kaka has already turned down a reported half million a week to play for the actual Man City. Ronaldinho chose Brazil and Humberto Suazo chose Mexico. Also, Henry is as big a name as those three, as was Marquez in this part of the world. Red Bull built it - they didn't come. Even Beckham wasn't filling the HDC at the end of his tenure, despite on-field success. In any case, even if you got those players here in 2015, it doesn't change the fact that had I emigrated to Queens, NY instead of Orange County, CA, whereas I'd likely have supported such a club due to location, as a lifelong United supporter I would not follow a MCFC affiliated outfit under any circumstances. That's already one scenario where they lost money. Red Bull for their treatment of SV Salzburg fans would have also lost my money. If Chivas USA were the only club in SoCal, then based on the crass cash-in they clearly are, I'd be unlikely to have patronised that club either. I probably wouldn't have supported a Red Devils United USA or somesuch either. I'm not alone and this New York affiliation ticks multiple boxes. Plus there's the whole Abu-Dhabi human right scontroversy. Mansour holds a high position in that government you know.
Watch this ownership group go Inter like with blue n black stripes to get some Yankee's pinstripes love in their kit. The Gulf Coast South has had two teams in MLS, Tampa and Houston. Factor in all the regional lower league teams in the Southern U.S. and I didn't realize so many of my fellow Southern soccer junkies could complain so much about lack of a regional team to support. Heck, Chattanooga has a team to go out and support!
Side point but as long as the company does legal stuff, I don't care what it does as long as it pays the bills. And it's pretty hypocritical for MLS to not allow liquor sponsors while every commercial period during every game we're shoved El Jimador tequila with an Alexi Lalas voiceover.
Do people actually talk about soccer on this threads or everything has to be economics? Anyway let me give it a try: Abdul Razak, Dennis Suarez and John Guidetti. Write those names because these are some of the young starlets on Man. City's youth team and might as well end up being the stars of this team.
Listen, at some point you reach critical mass with the casual fans. At some point you go from "may watch" to "must watch". Beckham was a pretty good try. Red Bulls plus Henry and Rafa was not enough. NYC has a good start already and the ownership certainly have enough money to make it happen.
there's going to be some eyebrows raised about 100 mil expansion fee in some circles. a front page article on BBC and such. there is no such thing as bad publicity, and MLS is getting publicity. hopefully this translates into more good players giving MLS a shot in the future (and I don't meant Titus Bramble)
So, two of the most succesful sports teams in the world invest in an MLS expansion team, and a significant percentage of BS posters lose their shit. It's like we live in Bizarro world. MLS has gone from having to scrounge around to find owners wherever it can (like when they were talking to whatshisname from Rochester) to being an attractive investment opportunity for the owners of some of the biggest sports brands in the world. Seriously, people are upset because there is a chance NYCFC will have a similar-colored jersey as Man City?
Well, technically, doesn't Chivas USA drain some league resources (not lost potential revenue) in terms of the salary cap? I was led to believe that the league actually pays for the rosters (minus DP salaries) since they own the player contracts and teams just hold the players' rights. If Chivas was not bringing enough money in from sponsorships and TV deals that could potentially mean a net negative.
-Overreacting to what are likely placeholders on their current website is something that everyone should be wary of doing. 2015 is a long time away; my guess is that the final colors will be less similar to Sporting KC (or Manchester Citeh) than we think -Zlatan Ibrahimovich makes eleventy billion euros a year with PSG; he's not going to come play for an expansion MLS team in 2 years. -The fact that the Yankees are involved, potentially from a marketing perspective, is fantastic news for people who like success and enjoy hating things. -LOLCosmos.
One can only hope. I really think the league isn't that stupid but still it'd be nice to see New Yorkers raise a bit of a stir to ensure this won't happen because that website is a bit worrying. Yankees = good, City cookie cutter = bad.
Haven't read through the whole thread yet, but this is my initial reaction. NYC FC was a likely potential name regardless of the ownership group, it finally gives the league a "City" team and it works. I'm waiting until the colors/crest are announced before getting worked up about Man City branding. If there's some light blue, that's not a big deal depending on the whole product. If it's a copy of the Man City uniform (light blue top, white shorts) and/or a similar crest, then I'd have more of a problem.
I don't dislike this move, but that headline makes it sound like Man City and the Yankees are on some sort of mission of charity to save our league.
actually yankee pinstripes with man city/ queens flag colors would look pretty sweet. oh yeah RIP cosmos.
Good luck to anyone who decides to bring a third MLS team to Florida.. while I know soccer has grown and more importantly the MLS has grown since their two teams folded the track record of Florida sports fans is not so nice. Look at the Marlins, even last year when they had a young and exciting team playing in a brand new beautiful stadium they could only average about 70% sold, this year after the fire sale it's 48%.. The Heat and Magic do OK as long as they're winning, when they aren't the fans are gone... the hockey teams I'll give a pass on the account of hockey teams in freaking Florida.. but also the Panthers play in the middle of nowhere, and the Lightning get pretty good support.
