    Yeah, thats Holland!!

Is that when they had the great romanian Coach Stefan Covaci ??

He gave Holland and Ajax one of the best styles of football ever!! That was a coach, not ..Advocat!!
If I recall ,he won a lot of things with Ajax for a large period of the 70's!! Nobody could beat Ajax at the time!!

Oh no, it's that bloke again who thinks Dutch football is forever indebted to Romania.

Answer a question LEPE. Why do you think Covaci was replaced by Michels right before the 1974 world cup?

I have heard about this before - the great Dutch football revolution of the early 70s would not have been possible without the great Romanian legend Kovacs. A Romanian friend of mine told me that the Dutch imported the idea of "total football" from Romania - it was only a theory in Romania, because they didn`t have the right players for their vision. That`s why Kovacs settled in Holland, because he saw the right kind of players.

Yet without the Romanian "total football" theory developed in the mid-60s, the Dutch football revolution would have never happened!

Kovacs saw the right kind of players in Holland? Can I just point out that 1974 was the first ever international tournament for the Dutch. Holland was one of the last European countries to introduce professional football in the mid 1960s and it was still a developing country in the world of football, nowhere near as big as England and Germany for example, and CERTAINLY not bigger than Romania at the time. So why would he go to Holland to export his total football idea? That's question no. 1.

Also despite Ajax and Feyenoord doing well in the early 1970s in the UEFA cup, there was little or no confidence in Holland doing well in the world cup - the success of Feyenoord in particular was largely attributed to foreign players. In 1973 Holland lost to Austria, and barely scraped a draw against both Belgium and Poland - total football? I think not. They were in fact playing so badly that they sacked Hungarian coach Fardhonc (sp?) and hired Rinus Michels four months before the start of the tournament. That's when they first started playing 'total football' and that's when the successes came, with not a Romanian in sight.

What's more important anyway is that the Dutch still (at least try to) adhere to the principles of Total Football. Unlike the Romanians. It is an inherently Dutch thing.

Also I was wondering about whether Kovacs had ever even coached the Dutch national team. I just checked the Dutch FA's statistics - I was right, he was never in charge of Holland. For a full list of 'bondscoaches' go here:

That's this discussion closed me thinks.

Yeah, he's got it all wrong. Frantisek Fadrhonc was the NT coach at the time and as Johan pointed out, he was sacked because Holland struggled in qualification and almost failed to make the tournament.

And one more thing.... Fadrhonc was a Czech, not Romanian.

Funny how u say we "imported it"...when it was allready there, invented and implemented by Michels long before Kovacs came to Ajax. Kovacs had it easy, reaped all the rewards left behind by the general, who departed for Barca.
