It going to be difficult to get a big TV contract when you are getting beat by fishing and poker.

I guess this means goodbye to early kickoffs being nationally broadcast unless they're part of a double-header.

I won't pretend that I know everything, but I really think that they need to have a game on Friday or Thursday that is nationally televised. I am pretty sure most of the TV audience are fans of a specific team. If I am going to 7:30 game on Saturday, I am not watching another MLS game at 4:00. But on Thursday or Friday night I will watch almost any game. I know some will say that we used to have Thursday ESPN game and the ratings were not growing, but it may take years + not growing is better than going down

I'd say 53K is a reasonable number for that match-up. Montreal obviously wasn't gonna draw since it's a Canadian team. And then of course it's against Chicago whose local tv ratings are non-existent.

Probably one of the worst match-ups ratings wise that NBC could have aired. Not sure why they did air it. I'd be more concerned if something like LA vs NY, or Seattle vs Houston (for example) got a 53K rating.

Some of the NHL games barely drew over 100K, which would be like 20-30K by MLS standards. There are gonna be some **** games that will get bad ratings.

Nah, that's why Canadian teams aren't shown on US national broadcasts in meaningful numbers.

does anyone know what ratings the (uefa) champions league semi-finals got? Bit surprised that I can't find this information anywhere considering these are some of the most important soccer matches of the year.

Can't find anything at all. The only figures I could find were that 16 million watched the Bayern game in Germany.

I wouldn't worry about ratings I think its a joint venture in the aspect that NBC ESPN realize they have to invest in the game here in America if they want it to succeed like the EPL on the other hand they want MLS to realize they have to also invest in spending money on big name players to justify a significant increase to big 5 league tv contracts I expect somewhere between 50-60 mil year would I be shocked if its more or less NO.

The EPL has a ceiling to how popular it can ever become here in North America just due to distance . Every Eurosnob can love it all they want but it has limits. MLS can go much higher here domestically with investment. What we are seeing here with all the soccer competition on tv is that Networks are telling MLS to take off those effing training wheels who cares if " insert name" smaller market team cries about their national tv exposure tell them to go get some "REAL DP's" then we might put em on more often as well as market their brand.

I also think networks like ESPN are learning something from this too, that the American soccer market is very saavy soccer wise and if they are going to spend money on soccer that they just can't show any league that is perceived to be better than MLS and expect to cash in on ratings for all that why not show the Brasilero. Americans want to see the best leagues meaning EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga Serie, A they would rather watch more MLS than spend time watching Liga MX a league a notch above MLS.
I bet that one has execs scratching their heads so far. This Soccer TV thing is a fickle market. This can only help ESPN in dealing with how to market MLS for ratings in the future.

I am sure you mean the English speaking market, because the Spanish speaking market does prefer Liga MX over all other leagues, Liga MX tends to get better ratings that all other soccer leagues available in the USA over all.

Well I seem to remember that a lot of that deal was to get more Liga MX games into ESPNDeportes; I am sure the ESPN executives would love to get a bigger slice of that market share.

I know we have talked about the ESPN vs ESPN2 ratings and why one is almost always higher than the other.

This dude complaining about BYU not being on ESPN seems to agree.

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/...show-ESPN-and-ESPN2-are-not-equal.html?pg=all

I also found this, as of December of 2012 regarding TV access.

    ESPN....................... 98,527K TV homes
    ESPN2..................... 98,503K
    NBCSports............... 77,829K
    Speed (FS1)............. 81,005K
    Fuel (maybe Fs2)... 36,283K

    ..
So if MLS gets half of what NHL gets as its season average does Garber walk in and say I want a 100 mil a year. By the numbers he has a right to will he get it NO. NHL gets 200 mil yr for 10 years.

You have to peel the onion a few more layers.

The NHL package has significantly more games in it than the MLS package does. And in each of those games the NHL has significantly more minutes of advertising space than MLS does.

On top of that, right now MLS is less than 25% of the NHL ratings on NBCSN, but the real difference comes in the playoffs where the NHL ratings go up quite a bit and NBCSN shows a ton of those games.

The best MLS can hope for from NBC if they give them the A package is $20m. If MLS wants more they may have to bundle the Spanish rights and/or the B package.

And THIS is why you usually don't see Canadian teams on US TV. Every TV set in Canada could be tuned into the game and it's not going to make any difference in the Nielsen number.

The 122k is a very good number respectively. Second best this year and was better than all but 2 of the post Olympic games (17) last year on NBCSN.
