I think he'd help our midfield. He's seriously contemplating coming back to professional soccer. Overall he's been well received by US players. Move Pontius into an A-Mid role. And I think "United" could be a leader on a social issue as well. Discuss. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/s...ers-feels-free-after-revealing-he-is-gay.html
From the way he sounds in the NY Times article, if he does come back, he's going to be playing with a new found freedom and happiness that I can only imagine will make him a better player. If he's accepted in the locker room and the fan base, look out. He will not only make an incredible story, he'll be a force. Given that he says its most likely his come back will be with MLS, I would rather see him with United than with anyone else. I wonder if the FO has this type of vision.
Chicago does. It was one of the last things he tweeted before 'the big one.' Columbus traded his rights to Chicago.
he seems fairly certain the banter and treatment from within the club would still be hostile thats sad not entirely surprising but sad nonetheless
Hah! I wonder how much of his concern over the locker room, club, and supporters is more due to his fears and/or how his internal voices of self-judgement might respond to the inevitable off hand crap that someone will say about his sexual orientation. Personally, I think MLS is ready for it, but that doesn't mean some blowhards aren't going to say crap and/or use it to attempt to rankle him and pull his head out of the game. It might be a matter of him wanting to get used to being out and figuring out how to ignore those sort of trollish efforts to impact his game before jumping back into professional play. I'd welcome him to DC anytime, but given how allocations work...I don't think the league would calvinball him our way.
I think the league needs for calvinball to be wearing a DC United jersey for once, as this may be the best place for this social issue to be addressed.
Well they calvinballed Adu to us. But all that got was ticket sales to teenaged girls and their parents and a bunch of unfortunate kittens.
guardian interview (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/mar/29/robbie-rogers-coming-out-gay) i'd like to think fans wouldnt mess with him if he came to MLS but players on the pitch, teammates he doesnt get along with, and coaches might still do & say things that he'd rather not deal with
The Bruce? Not sure it would be any different, especially in LA, where mucho macho is a way of life...
I disagree, the world is still homophobic, America is no different, especially the big cities. Washington DC is the political Capital of the US and it is by a large percentage a liberal city, if there is going to be some tolerance, and then perhaps acceptance it would be here (Maryland has been leading the way, but I must admit Virginia where I live is still very set in its ways), or at least I think so. I am not gay, I'm married with children (kind of like Al Bundy but with political views on the other side), but I am a born again atheist and I think people should live the way the want. Quite frankly, I am sick and tire of people keeping quiet and towing the line.
I think Robbie would be welcome in any club, save: Columbus, Dallas, KC, SLC, and although it would never come up given their ethnic preference; Chivas USA.
egads - get over it - We got Ruiz not because we were "high" on the allocation list - We weren't "high", we were rather low - We got Ruiz despite that we were low on the allocation list, because all those other teams above us passed on him - Thats the way league parity rules work - Getting Ruiz had little if any impact on our getting some one like Rodgers
