I specifically wanted to ask this question to Galaxy fans since Donovan is our star, but does that mean he's still your favorite national player as well? Sometimes I'd like to think Donovan is my favorite Galaxy player and Dempsey is my favorite Nats player. Anyways I'm curious to see how many of you support Dempsey over Donovan. I obviously like both I like to think Donovan is growing the sport here in America while Dempsey is spreading American presence overseas. So who is the face of American soccer?
LD all day. Dude played in Mexico City with freaking swine flu. He's a G, in every sense of the word.
This question is United States Soccer's quandrical enigma. Dempsey or Donovan. First the Pro's. Clint Dempsey has great footwork, dribbling ability, an eye for goal, a take no shit attitude during Nats games, and is the first American who has the ability to be a world renouned forward. Landon Donovan is a great passer, has incredible speed, a definite edge in ability above all other American born mids-forwards. a sense for the dramatic, and a leader by example on the pitch. Now the Con's. Clint Dempsey is lazy, a consumate drifter when not the focal point of attack, selfish beyond selfish when he feels its "his" time, lacks true grit and stamina, almost has an aire of cockiness that keeps team mates and fans from truely embracing him. Landon Donovan can fade when not the captain, he lacks true confidence in himself and his game which results in a constant struggle to maintain his form. Will pass instead of shoot first, because he has just a hint of fear and failure. gets frustrated easily which makes him almost invisible at times in matches. The answer as to whom to choose. the answer is easy.. Landon Donovan Someday Clint Dempsey will over take Landon in the All Time goal scoring for a US National team player, but then he should. Landon was never an out and out striker. What it comes down to is who has done more in their national team career. And Landon Donovan will always have 2002 in Korea, with the ultimate goals against Mexico in the round of 16. He will have the goal against Algeria in the 2010 world cup. He has epic battles in concacaf... not to mention wins against Mexico. If the proving point is international stage, it's Donovans resume that stands above and beyond, not to mention his club resume, which goes without saying. With Dempsey as the Nats captain, it will be interesting to see how he leads the team going forward. and if he is willing or capable of putting in the substantial work that Landon Donovan did for over 10 years.
I never understand why it's one vs. the other. Makes no sense to me. It's not like there isn't room on the field for both.
Gonzilla is bigger than both of them. Seriously, like put Donovan on Dempsey's shoulders and I still think Omar is taller... So I think Gonzilla is our biggest star.
As I stated I like them both, but every country has a face of the country. England had Beckham, Germany had Ballack, Portugal has Ronaldo... The question was either who your favorite was or if you didn't have a favorite who do you consider the face of U.S. Soccer... I still haven't voted yet because I haven't made up my mind yet. Like I said above I consider Donovan the American ambassador of soccer here in the MLS while Dempsey is our Overseas star. Both different roles but both able to be considered face of U.S. Soccer. When I talk to most Americans they say Donovan, but when I've talked to a few people from outside the U.S. they've said Dempsey I guess because there use to watching him in Premier League. Obviously there is room for both, we need them both no one is debating that, it's not pick one kick another off the team... It's simply who do you like better, or consider the face of U.S. Soccer.
I still don't have to choose and you can't make me, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.. [Said in my best 5 y.o. voice.]
I did the same poll on the U.S. Mens team forum and right now its 11-0 Donovan. I think it's safe to say most still consider Donovan the face of U.S. Soccer... He's our Beckham, Ballack haha
As far as the Nats go, as soon as Dempsey gives me one of these: Then we can have an actual debate...
In a bar where it was so dead silent you could hear a pin drop in the place. DEAD SILENT. My friend couldn't take the stress and walked outside, then came back in 10 seconds later because she couldn't stand trying to watch the TV from outside the glass. The anxiety was nearly overwhelming. All I remember when we scored was crap flying everywhere and yelling. Arms, cellphones, liquids, forks, whatever. I also think I hugged/high fived about 5 random people. Didn't come down off that high for the entire day. One of the best sporting events of my life.
Even the video of all the reactions from the crowds watching the goal put's butterfly's in my stomach. Such a great sports moment.
This thread has once again gone to pot on the Nats board. I don't know what I was expecting. The guy over there who is arguing with us Ghosting is straight up a condescending tool. Plus one who can't do math (his calculator didn't work!?) and clearly picks numbers to suit his argument.
Amazingly, not him, but another uber Dempsey fan that decides to drag LD through the mud because his paragon of amazingness for Fulham and the Nats can't do any wrong. Whatever.
