Yeah, Johnson is on site! So they actually pay extra for him to go and butcher the call and scream like a 5 year old instead of hitting the switch and using the commentary of a non Americanized/non video game sounding commentator. Also Schapes. Here are the other options in order of logic if you dont like a commentator: 1. Turn on Fox Deportes 2. Find an online stream 3. Download the match in a few hours with proper commentary 4. Send an email/fb/twitter message to fox to let them know you're not accepting sub par bullshit Otherwise, yeah enjoy the shitty commentary you deserve if you're willing to eat any old garbage thats put on your plate.
That screaming is definitley too much - thought my speakers were gonna blow. Way worse than Bretos in the FSW days, and at least Max has some solid soccer knowledge
He has somehow managed to get worse the more games he does. Truly awful today. The guys they put with him are proof that an English accent and top level experience don't make someone a quality commentator.
My real problem is not even with Gus Johnson. Im sure he's a nice enough guy. My problem is with Fox. The genius behind the neon puck with the flaming tail for hockey. The great minds behind foxbots and a talking baseball that will teach you how to throw a slider. As usual Fox has an approach of, if it aint broke, how do i break it. They dont get that sport should sell itself as is. If you just promote it right and let it play itself out it often fails to dissapoint. Why do we need to tamper with something that has worked before fox and will surely work after. Do people really tune into the CL final because the NfL guy is in the studio? I just dont get it. No one is going to watch an FA Cup match because GuJo is calling it. If anything, people will tune im to watch an fa cup march and then tune out because the announcer is unbarable!
The puck thing was actually pretty cool. I think the only reason it's not used today is cost. I was watching Liverpool-Spurs and the match commentating was pretty bad. They were two guys with accents from somewhere inside the UK and everything. Very pro-Liverpool and 'in my day that wasn't a foul' get off my lawn type commentary. I would've taken Gus Johnson and his limited pool of knowledge over them.
The most annoying thing about Gus is his over enthusiasm when literally nothing is going on. There is a work around, with minimal technical know-how and equipment, to change the commentators without compromising your HD picture quality from fox soccer, for a low quality online stream. I have my tv on FS HD, hook up my computer via HDMI, play the audio from a stream on my computer instead of the tv audio, sync them up via my dvr, and voila, HD picture with proper commentators. Also, ITV player shows a live stream of many games; a UK proxy and post code will allow you access. If you have some moral objection to streaming, sites like talksport offer "legal" commentary. Regardless of your choice, the result is HD picture and commentators that don't scream at you.
It's as simple as plugging in a cord and going to a website. 30 seconds. But hey, enjoy muting or not watching it. Great suggestion
So, its quite simple. If you think its way too much work like Schapes, then youre stuck with shitty commentary. If you're interested in something better you'll find something better. Im not accepting garbage so therefore ill do that little more to find something more acceptable.

Gus Johnson is so goddamn annoying. Keeps yelling, almost screaming, for no reason. Doesn't understand the flow of the game too much. He just starts yelling every time he thinks something is going to happen. Why the hell is this guy even doing soccer games? I know some say we don't need to be more like Europe and Euro announcers aren't better.....but they are better. American soccer announcers are terrible. Whether Gus, Twellman, Harkes, Lalas, Dunseth, Martino, they're just 2nd rate, if that. Darke/Maca are the best we have regularly and sadly it seems we won't get them anymore. Gus sounds like I fan some dumbass fan screaming in my ear all game. Kinda like if you watch a youth game and the mom of one of the kids is sitting behind you and screaming incoherently all game. That's Gus.

The problem is that FOX has a history of making poor decisions when it comes to broadcasting major soccer matches. Why should I believe that hiring Gus Johnson is a good idea when FOX has got it wrong so many times in the past? Remember when the camera caught Curt Menefee reading off a paper during the UEFA CL final? And then he quickly hid the paper behind his back, lol. That was the last time we saw him. I just think that the people running FOX sports fundamentally don't get soccer. FOX believes that it must be compared to other American sports, and that your average American viewer is a complete idiot. Well that is actually not the case. There is no evidence that dumbing down your product increases viewership, yet they keep insisting on this.
Incredible... By law in Europe and Canada, all phones must be unlocked. I'm an hour away from the Canadian border and i can't use my phone once i cross the bridge. Disgraceful. The ironic part is 99.999% of the population here do not know what an unlocked phone means. Shocking.
