We beat (1-0) what was expected to be a lousy team that turned out a gutsy performance.
They beat (3-0) a lousy team and looked dangerous coming forward.

The first two Columbus goals against Chivas came on plays that could be problematic for the WC in the past--allowing attackers to tee it up at the top of the box unchallenged, and defending good movement off a dead ball play. We'll se how Rusin/O'Brien deal with it. That third goal was just awful Chivas defending, and then absolutely no desire to catch the forward, Aduro.

Overall, from the highlights, it looked like a sloppy game from both sides. There were holes aplenty in Columbus' back line too. I thought Chivas should have had a couple.

With some improved touches in the final third, and half-decent finishing this time from Mattocks, this is a winnable game for the WC.

Can we get a projected starting line-up? Re-Coker? Koffie? Will the WC continue to start Miller in the 10 over Camilo?

starting lineup vs columbus, march 9:

    cannon

    lee o brien rusin, rochat

    davidson

    koba coker koffie

    miller mattocks

subs bench-- knighton, hurtado, camilo, manneh, harvey, hertzog, watson, paulo jr/teibert

i would not be surprised to see camilo not even make the bench-- somethings going on between he and MR... and it aint good

    I say:

    Cannon

    Lee O'Brien Rusin Rochat

    Reo-Coker Koffie

    Hurtado/Miller Kobayashi Camilo

    Mattocks

No way Kobayashi should play the wing again. Yes RC made a big difference in the second half last week, but so did the fact that Koba moved to the middle. He and RC had good chemistry there right away. I ask you, does Koba give Koffie that sweet tee-up at the top of the box if he's isolated on the wing? Miller still hasn't convinced me, but true he was active, so it's hard to leave him on the bench. But no way would I play him in the middle at the expense of Koba's central playmaking (unless we want another 1-0 game).

As for Camilo, if Rennie doesn't play him due to attitude, then Rennie's being just as stubborn as Camilo. Put him on the field and let him show something. If he doesn't, just continues to mope, then you have a right as coach to sit him for as long as it takes. Camilo's given the team two years of production (most goals in year one; most total points--goals/assists--in year two), so regardless of attitude in practice, he has a right to prove himself on the field. His finish has always been far better than Miller's, and that hasn't changed to date, even with Miller's increased conditioning. I still he's a better bet to score than Miller, and we don't lose any speed with Camilo either.

I wasn't overly impressed with our opening performance against TFC. 2nd half was much better with NRC though. It'll be interesting to see how we do if he goes the full 90. Columbus is a much better team than TFC so this should be a good early test.

    My Guess:

    Cannon

    Lee---Rusin---O'Brien---Rochat

    Koffie---Reo-Coker

    Miller---Kobayashi---Hurtado

    Mattocks

It seems as if Rennie has something against Camilo, even last year he was hesitant to use him consistantly. Hurtado showed well off the bench and I suspect will get the place of Manneh in the starting 11. The Miller situation seems like the opposite of Camilo's, MR will go out of his way to find a way to get him into the lineup, I would love to see the 'caps try two up top again with mattocks on the last defenders shoulder and miller/camilo just behind him.

Hello all, I come in peace! Interesting game for both teams. We both beat teams that aren't supposed to be very good, and thus got next to no credit for it.

Crew decided to stay out west after playing Chivas, and we learned today that the same 18 will travel to Vancouver. I'd expect the same XI, with the possibly exception of off-season signing Sanchez starting instead of O'Rourke in CM, but the reason he didn't start last week was because he wasn't up to 90 minute fit yet. So maybe not. O'Rourke almost gifted Chivas a couple goals, so maybe Tchani could also be an option.

But our coach is one of the last people on earth who believes that if you win the week before, you shouldn't change the XI, so we'll probably get the same XI, even if Sanchez is fully fit, which would just be stupid.

Lots of new faces for the Crew. 2 in back, 2 in MF.

    --------------Gruenebaum-----------
    Williams---Marshall---Glauber---Wahl
    -----------O'Rourke---Viana---------
    Oduro----------------------------Gaven
    ------------------Higuain-------------
    ---------------Arrieta-----------------

Bench: Lampson (GK), Beckie (D), Sanchez (M), Tchani (M), Speas (M/F), Finlay (M/F), Finley (F).

New players in bold. Though I can't remember if we had Arrieta and Higuain when we played last year. Those two are the biggest threats, obviously. Along with Oduro's speed, Gaven's general craftiness, and our height on set pieces (Marshall, Glauber, Williams, Wahl, and Tchani when/if he gets in).

i agree that camilo should get on the field to show what he can add-- if he isnt even on the bench and comes on as a sub, its really the case that MR just believes that Camilo does not fit into the team concept... and he might just be right- so what is left??

a pouting match which camilo will not win, he works his arse off in practice to prove MR wrong, or he is traded-- which do u think will happen?? my guess is a trade

I agree a trade may well be in the cards. But then what do the WC get in return? The wingers are already pretty young, so some experience would be nice in that position. But how many are there in the league that can keep up with the others and Mattocks? Then there's still the issue of a genuine target man up front. Heineman looks like a depth player to me, and Salgado, who can play that role, is still far off with injury and fitness. We saw against TFC how many teams will try to deal with the WC speed, I think--play very compact at the back--so a target man would give MR a valuable option when teams turtle like that.

I still think getting the most out of Camilo is the easiest option--if it can be done (?)

Saw some Crew players wandering around Downtown today in their track suits while I was running to a meeting, I was late so no time to give em the gears or "trip" into their knees as I was on my way :p

Personally I'd like to see Knighton with some mintues. But seems like Rennie wants to play Cannon until he goes into a bad run of form.

Seeing Camilo not getting any action against TFC does worry me. I really appreciate what Camilo has offered to the club since 2011 and wishes to see him stick around unless there are teams that are willing to pay handsomely for him.

My ideal formation for saturday will be:

    --------------------Knighton--------------------
    -----------O'brien------------Rusin------------
    Lee----------------------------------------Rochat
    --------------Reo-Coker-------Koffie------------
    ------------------------Daigo---------------------
    -----Camilo-------------------------Mattocks---
    --------------------Miller-------------------------

Subs: Cannon, Hurtado, Manneh, Davidson, Paulo Jr., Tiebert, Hertzog

Offense: Justifications for putting Darren in that Left forward role: he can outpace the full-back and cut into his right foot and have a goal. While playing Miller at his primary position will allow Miller to do better runs will be very beneficial. Camilo has proven himself that he can play on the right wing position. Last but not least hopefully Daigo can pick out the three attacking outlets while Koffie and Daigo himself can join into the attack. If we are in need of goals: we can bring on Paulo jr, Hurtado, or even Manneh to burn the crew with speed towards to end game.

Defense: O'brien and Rusin did played couple games together preseason and I like what I've seen so far from the pairing. Rochat and Lee are just class. I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrong with partnering up Koffie and Reo-Coker together in the midfield for some possession play. If we do lead the crew and are defending, taking off Camilo for Davidson to sit in front of the CB, imagine the midfield with Koffie Davidson and Reo-Coker...Also Hertzog coming in for Miller would most likely to seal the deal for us. I'd like to point out Hertzog (from preseasons) that he may be our ideal lone striker. His has great work-rate and puts a lot of pressures on the defenders by running non-stop at them.

If Daigo can pick out our speedy players late in the game for a counter, then we have found our solution to acquiring a true #10 player. It would be tremendous for us to have Chiumiento back too... we can only imagine.

I give the Man of the Match award to Young-Pyo Lee. Miller was awesome, but YPL was a beast, doing everything everywhere. So impressed.

Miller has won me over. He showed he deserved that armband today. Was unlucky not to score a hat-trick, but the second goal was just pure hard work and a will to win. He was the difference in the game at the end--not much more you can ask of your highest paid player, imo. For me, he was man of the the match.

the Caps have a lot of potential to do some serious damage this season,,, and entertain the fans-- good things, led by a strong MF and a fairly good back 4, altough a little aged and not the quickest at the middle with OB and rusin- waiting to see what leveron can add

mattocks is an enigma, not just 4 me, but even more 4 his teammates who are still trying to figure out what kind of run he is going to make-- a very confused runner, not sure where he is going and often makes the wrong run; his first touch is really weak and will need a lot of serious work to get better

hurtado could be a starter soon- a smart player with good ball skills to go with his amazing quickness; and manneh will be a growing influence with experience

i just dont see good things for camilo-- he just looks too slow in his thinking for the team

my 1 concern is in goal and i would like to see the caps get a first rate stopper now that de merit's salary is open due to his season-ending injury (any1 who thinks he is coming back this year just does not know enough about achilles ruptures)

    very entertaining team

I think people are being unfair to Camilo - at least in regards to his performance against Columbus. He was brought in to slow the game down, holding up the ball, earning throws and corners, so that we could hold our lead. It didn't look like he was playing to beat players; it did look like he was trying to hold up play deep.

He did that very well, and - in my opinion - was a key to putting the screws to Columbus in the final 15 minutes.

He may be crappy long-term, but I think he did what was asked of him.

do you really think camilo will be happy in this role-- hold onto the ball in dead-weight positions to kill time?? might as well trade him and use tiebert to do the same for a lot less money, and get something back in return

Well, of course, I can't know all this. Camilo will never be happy - he think he is worth more than he is, and that sense of entitlement will make him discontented wherever he goes, I think. But his control is very helpful when we need to go to a control game, especially if he can become a better distributor of short passes out of the deep wing.

As for the Teibert suggestion - until we get rid of Camilo, we are paying him, so we may as well deploy him tactically when it makes sense to.

somethings going to give with camilo-- and salgado has started to play in reserve games, so he is another player that i think will bump ahead of camilo-- its time to find out what a healthy-- HOPEFULLY!!- omar can do... which pushes camilo further down the player selection pole

I think we already know what a healthy Omar can do: good technical skill moving through the mid, and incredible service from the left wing into the box. A technical winger as opposed to a speedy one. A nice way to allow for different tactical approaches depending on the opponent and situation.

And I, for one, can't wait to see him on the field soon. JUST DON'T RUSH IT, OMAR! We don't need another DeMerit.
