I'm sorry to hear about this. I guess it's only a matter of time.

So can we take this kind of stress? What happens if there is a political effect? Can we look forward to more and more Americans being treated this way? Is it only a matter of time untill US businessmen, aid workers and missionaries are subjected to this?

I'm very, VERY surprised that any serviceman in Iraq, particularly a Marine, would allow himself to be taken alive after the Berg murder. Something doesn't quite add up here.

Apparently, so do a number of active-duty and former Marines on the Military.com message board...

You think he is some sort of set up, to get some attention for the insurgents? I mean..... what would it take to manufacture a U.S army uniform, and have someone play it out?

    Also...
When you look at the uniform? Isn't the colour not camoflouge and just Khaki?

It is certainly the camo currently used by the US Marine Corps.
This uniform is not available to civilians. Only Marines can buy them. However, they are in high demand by people that mil-sim, and can be found on eBay or other places being sold by less-than-scrupulous Marines. It generally isn't cheap to get them. It would be much easier for Iraqi insurgents to just steal some from the laundry (as laundry is done by Iraqis), if that is what they wanted to do.

Don't you love it when a dude sitting in front of a computer screen somewhere in the safety of continetal US demands that another man give up his life for a dubious cause so he could feel better about being an American? It's kind of like how overweight white-trash idiots sit on a couch and yell at the TV, demanding that the damned basketball player ignore the twisted ankle and play through the pain. So much easier when it's someone else's ass on the line.

You can 'knock-offs' in a military surplus store now.

if they DO have a marine, and he isnt rescued by other marines VERY soon (not too likely), hes a dead man.

he probably knows that himself. ************.

It's pretty easy to take someone alive when they run out of bullets. I wouldn't expect the marine to save one last shot for himself, nor cut his own throat to keep the insurgents from having the pleasure. Really Alex, I see a wonderful education going to waste.

My prayers go out for this man. Nothing good will come from this situation.

Right. And we all know just how intellegent and clear thinking people that frequent internet message boards are. They also a valid guide to judging the thoughts and feelings of the general population rather well.

I'm not sure you've ever heard of it before, but you should check out this site called BigSoccer.com sometime. This board is very muchso indicitive of the mindset of every soccer fan there is, and is chock full of rational, clear-thinking individuals, calmly discussing their like mindedness with other intellegent soccer fans.

Family of Marine shown in hostage video asks for prayers

The family of a Marine taken hostage in Iraq and threatened with beheading has asked people around the world to pray for his safe return. The family of Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun issued a brief statement late Sunday confirming that a hostage videotaped in Iraq was the missing soldier, who is of Middle Eastern origin.

I just don't know. First off, I know that Marines are trained never to go anywhere "in the field" without a buddy, especially in a combat zone. Second, after the murders of Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, and Kim Il-Sun, everyone over there knows what will happen if they get captured alive. Granted it's easier to say from a computer, but given the option of fighting, even with my bare hands if need be and even if all it does is force the terrorists to shoot or stab me rather than take me alive, or being captured, held for a few days, and then have me head sawed off for the entire world, including my family, to see on TV, I know which option I'd take.

There are also a couple of discrepancies with the uniform:

First, the man in the picture is wearing no rank insignia on his collar. Second, while this could be due to the lighting and shade of the picture, he appears to be wearing a green shirt underneath the camouflage blouse. This would not be worn with the desert utilities; a brown shirt would be worn instead.

Assuming that the man shown in the picture is indeed Cpl. Hassoun, the most likely explanation is that he was working as a translator/liason with Iraqi locals who betrayed him. That seems to me the only plausible explanation for his being captured alive and alone.

    Agreed.

So all this stuff makes sense to you, but the people who said Berg's might have been fake were full of it?

    Just saying.

Nice to see that racial stereo typing is alive and well in Canada... I find it tragically ironic that it is 'sub human' to cut an American invaders throat whereas it is liberating when a helicopter gunship fires its load on Iraqi wedding parties etc...

Apples and oranges. With Berg you had a body that was confirmed to be his (which was found before the tape was released, IIRC), you had Berg himself with his entire face shown (the blindfold in that picture covers so much of the man's face that I can't imagine it would be easy to identify him, especially as he is pretty nondescript-looking, doesn't really have any noticeable features that stand out), you had Berg speaking into the camera and identifying himself. All we have in this case is that the terrorists (and now it appear's, Hassoun's family--but as I said, the blindfold covers so much of his face that I can't see how they could 100% identify him) claim they have Hassoun, and have shown a Cpl. Hassoun's military ID card (which means they probably do have him, but not neccesarily alive).

Sorry, I must've missed where Doyle said all Arabs are subhuman, as opposed to saying that Arabs who cut off innocent people's (Cpl. Hassoun is a combatant but Nick Berg, Kim Il-Sun, Paul Johnson, and Danny Pearl were not) heads on videotape while chanting "Allah Akbar" are subhuman.

I also must've missed where it became a good idea to fire guns into the air in celebration when you know that there are military helicopters flying overhead. Seems to me that that would fall under the definition of "utter stupidity", but you never know.
