To steer back to soccer/Beckham discussion-- Does anyone actually know which tv providers in the Greater LA area actually carry BeIn Sports? In addition to watching foreign leagues, I do have this crazy desire to watch USMNT away qualifiers.....
I know Directv carries BeIN, but it is on their higher tiered packages or you need to pay for their sports pack (which I believe is $15/month).
there is no way in hell a 75% tax in france, sounds misinformed to me. i also think that saying he is donating it b/c of taxes is a bit rude to him, he could still get the left over money. he is doing it b/c he just doesnt need money anymore and knows a TON more is probably coming his way. Plus Victoria probably can take care of living costs on the money she'll be making rubbing shoulders in Paris
Yeah, that part really pisses me off. The USMNT should be on a freaking ESPN or NBCSports for ALL OF the world cup qualifiers. You want more people into soccer in the USA? Genius idea of not making it easily accessible to everyone.
The latter, as shown recently many(most?) people in America don’t understand the progressive tax system we have, expecting them to know anything about a foreign country’s tax system is a tall order.
I know we all hate midseason friendlies, but I was hoping that maybe one of this year's World Football Challenge teams would be PSG. LA vs PSG would be pretty cool. I'd much rather have that than Madrid again... But I just noticed that the WFC usually takes place in July/August...and Beckham's contract only goes until June 30.
should be a given, Ligue 1 has become so top heavy with them. Winning the champions league again would be the dream for becksy
The country that hosts the game gets to sell the TV rights. At least it won't be like last year where some countries sold the rights to a closed-circuit pay per view system. I have DirecTV, I think I pay $9/month extra for the Sports package which includes BeIn, Fox Soccer, and every regional sports channel in the country. DirecTV just knows how to get stuff done when it comes to sports. They figured out a way to get the TimeWarner Sports channel, had BeIN from the beginning, etc.
So when does Becks first suit up for PSG? They have a game tomorrow, do you think he will make a cameo?
Yep, glad I went with DirecTV and the sports package. They're just plain good about their programming. And good luck to Becks at PSG. Aren't they in CL too? Maybe he'll have a go at both CL title and Ligue I title.
Well David Beckham is a proof how success, wealth & fame can have the other ugly side. I mean dude is donating freaking 150.000 Euros a WEEK, to a kids charity for 5 months, and yet people have to twist it into something bad. Saying he did it because of the taxes, which is complete bs, or my personal favorite, "so what, nothing impressive here, he is worth millions". Um last time i checked no other footballer has ever given this much money, all of it really. So in the end all you doing is bitching about someones good gesture! And of course not to mention the glorious UK press resenting the fact its for a French kid hospital, he should have just kept his money haha! I never thought he would do this, it never entered my mind, so it surprised me, and going to PSG will be hard for him, i wish him all the best, if there is a man who is willing to work hard for his place its him. And how epic was it to see in that conference him mention LAG, and still having an interest in MLS after he retires? A lot of people speculating there was a behind the scene deal made with Qatar money people to invest in MLS, after he retires, hope that is true, for once.
So I looked into it. In addition to others mentioning DirectTV, I checked and Time Warner Cable offers it on their Sports Package, which is 15 various sports channels (including BeIn) for $8.99/month. FYI.
Highly doubt it. I think in the presser he mentioned something about appearing in a few weeks, but I'm not entirely positive.
Giving $ to charity will also shield him from the "he should be playing better for all the $$ he's making" criticism he might encounter if he struggles a bit. The club will still be spending the same amount but the criticism (if it happens) won't stick. And Becks is no dummy - he knows his reputation is worth more $-wise than a few months salary. Plus its a nice thing to do and I think Becks is a nice guy. But also a very-smart-about-marketing kind of nice guy.
The tax rate is 75% of income for anyone making more than $1.28 million per year, though that rate was ruled unconstitutional a few weeks ago. In 1944 and 1945 the US had an income tax rate of 94% for top earners. From 1936-1980 the tax rate was at least 70% for top earners. Our current income tax rate structure is a result of Reagan who took the highest rate from 70% to 28%, which is currently at 35%. It really wasn't that long along that our peak income tax rates were that high. So to return to the topic of soccer, I often wonder how big a role income tax plays for soccer players. For example, look at the "Becklam law" in spain that reduced soccer player tax rates to 24% when it was active. For a player to take home $5M/year a Spanish club would pay a player $6.7M/year whereas an English club would need to pay $8.3M. Over a five year period and if your team has a lot of high wage players the money can add up.
Maybe you missed the part where we all agreed not to clutter the forum with political talking points. I will respect that and not dismantle your potted history in this setting.
BTW - I'm no Beckham uber-fan or anything, but the vibe I've always got about him is that he's a fairly decent guy (although surrounded with lots of businessman and agents who do the dirty work for him) and I can believe that the main reason behind the salary donation to charity is to do something positive and good and not just a tax ploy... Although all that publicity and good will is probably doing wonders for his endorsement deals...
Good heart can certainly = Good business! Becks gives the shirt off his back! Image below (I still don't have the hang of posting images!)
He might come back to MLS in some form in 5 months. We are due to visit the White House at about the end of his stint and he will be with the team for the visit. Maybe he buys into the team by then and announces his retirement in the USA.
FWIW I went to set the USMNT game to record, and the BeIn (stupidest name for a channel that I can recall) schedule doesn't show the game. They are listing some world cup of handball...one more sport I don't think will grab my attention.
