WOW! This came as a major surprise! I heard about nothing but Scolari, Gunes and McCarthy and Bonfrere has been hired as our new national coach. I for one am glad that we got a Dutch coach who'll continue to preach "Total Soccer" concept to our players. I think the Dutch style fits our players the best.

I hope Bonfrere will contact Pim Verbeek and bring him back as our assistant coach. I also hope the incompetant KFA will give him the time and patience that they never gave Coehlo.

    Welcome Bonfrere!

    Make us proud!

Before you get too excited, it might be a good idea to look as this guy's resume for the last few years, which is basically getting fired from a succession of teams for bad results.
Has the KFA finally gone completely crazy? This dude's biggest selling point is that he's unemployed. :(

well, living here in Europe never heard of this man. But I think dutch way of "thinking-doing" football seems to become the koreans well.

I really hope they will do well and make it to Germany.

Now I just (still) need (the new!) korean national jersey.
People living in Korea tells me the jersey is not for sale!!??? really???

Are there no places in Europe where one can buy this jersey???!

A pleasant weekend to all soccer-fans...

"my" country Denmark will play against Bulgaria tonight..., ofcourse I hope for a win for denmark...

Greeting from Seoulofkorea ~ Young Min

First things first. I was taken aback seeing that this "short-list" has been on the news for weeks since the departure of Coehlo. So here are my own thoughts.

Bonfrere isn't a big name in European club football. If the biggest club you've coached is MVV Maastricht, then we can't really herald this as the second coming of the Messiah aka Hiddink. Given the fact that the two men share one thing in common, i.e. they're both Dutch, that's probably where all preliminary comparisons should stop.

But to his credit, the man guided Nigeria to the Olympic gold in 1996 beating Argentina in the final and Brasil in the semi-final. These were the same teams that boasted the now mature players we see in Europe such as Veron, Crespo, Zanetti and Rivaldo (although we haven't seen him in Europe in years).

My conclusion is that our federation was so desperate in getting a foreign coach and since McCarthy would rather languish at Sunderland hacking it out 46 times in Nationwide (oops..forgive me, I meant "The Championship") league, and Scolari has headaches of his own (as he can't seem to get it right with Portugal), we made a knee-jerk decision. I just hope that the Dutch in Bonfrere reminds us of our achievements under the other Dutchman. I hope Koreans all around the world can look to China and note that going Dutch doesn't equate success.

To "seoulofkorea." Try to go to www.foxsportsworld.com and to their store online. I saw a Korea shirt for sale @ $74.00 (plus shipping). Go to the site and then on the left side there's a menu of teams and there you'll find "Korea." Hell you can even buy a flag for a price.

Lee Hwe Taek and Huh Jung Moo may have been competent managers(not bloody likely) and players back in the day, but when it comes to maintaining professionalism and efficiency in running the KFA, they just seem like deers in headlights not knowing what the hell to do.

They need to hire international-saavy management types who know how to schmooze, negotiate, and close deals. In other words, WE NEED A CLOSER.

The only competent guy in the KFA right now is Ga Sam Hyun technical director. He engineered, pushed for, and insisted on a reluctant Hiddink to take the Korea job.

Again, KFA needs to hire people with international experience and saavy, because this Bonfrerre joker is another disaster waiting to implode upon the Korean NT. Even just doing something as superficial as looking at his photo, I have a bad feeling about just as I did with Coelho. Bonfrerre looks like an AA-meeting attending whino.

Bonfrere's qualifying record for the past two World Cups:

    1998
    Qatar
    Lost 2-0 to Kuwait
    Drew 1-1 with China
    Lost 3-0 to Iran
    Lost 1-0 to Saudi Arabia

Bonfrere Fired - Dzemal Habdiadzic takes over

    Won 1-0 over Kuwait
    Won 3-2 over China
    Won 2-0 over Iran
Lost 1-0 to Saudi Arabia (If they had won this, they would have gone to France)

    2002
    Nigeria
    Nigeria 2-0 Sierra Leone
    Liberia 2-1 Nigeria
    Nigeria 3-0 Sudan
    Ghana 0-0 Nigeria
    Sierra Leone 1-0 Nigeria

Bonfrere Fired - Shuaibu Ahmodu takes over

    Nigeria 2-0 Liberia
    Sudan 0-4 Nigeria
Nigeria 3-0 Ghana (Nigeria qualify for Korea-Japan)

So here's the KFA's obvious master plan, get Bonfrere in to lose a few games, then fire him and Korea qualify for Germany. :D

I mean come on guys, doesn't everyone deserve to get a 5th chance?

Honestly, this guy's resume sucks, If He loses to any one of the nations in the 1st round of asian cup, he deserves to be fired, we should easily win all 3 matches and advance on...

    WTF? Why?

A Korean coach could win Asian Cup fine!!! Hell, Cha Bum-geun - the same Cha that sat our best striker and man marked some of the world's best players with lead footed bozos - almost went undefeated in WC qualifiers!!! C'mon! Why were we in such a rush?

    Bonfrere's Coaching Record
    2002-2003: Al Ahly (Egypt)
    2002 - 2002 (Feb): Al Wehda (UAE)
    2002: United Arab Emirates
    2001: Al Wehda (UAE)
    1999 (Aug) - 2001 (Apr): Nigeria
    1999 - 1999 (Aug): Qatar
    1998 - 1999: Al Wehda (UAE)
    1997 - 1998: Qatar
    1996: Nigeria U23
    1990 - 1996: Nigeria/ assistant
    1984 - 1990: MVV Maastricht (Netherlands)

It seems kind of worrying that since leaving Nigeria in 1996 he's struggled to last for more than a year in any of his jobs. A quick internet search turns up a few accounts of bust-ups with players, coaches, fans and media. One report said that he didn't even watch Nigerian club games because he said "the players are not good enough and cannot match the professional level of the foreign-based players". That might be true, but how would he know if he didn't watch the games? ;)

Well, it's a start. His past record is dubious, but I hope that he adds the right ingredient to the Reds.

Korea Republic coach promises to restore passion

New South Korea coach Jo Bonfrere has promised to rekindle the passion he believes has been missing from the national team since they reached the 2002 World Cup semi-finals.
The former Nigeria coach signed a two-year contract last week, replacing Humberto Coelho, who stepped down in April after a humiliating 0-0 draw with the Maldives in an Asia World Cup qualifier.

"One of the reasons Korean football is so down nowadays is that the players' attitudes have changed from before", Bonfrere was quoted as saying by the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper on Tuesday.

"Vanity will get you nowhere. I will rekindle the players' passion to what it used to be during the 2002 World Cup", the Dutchman said during discussions with Korea Football Association (KFA) president Chung Mong-joon.

Bonfrere was hastily brought in as coach after talks with favoured candidate Frenchman Bruno Metsu broke down.

THE KFA said its selection had been swayed by the need to have a coach available at short notice to prepare for the Asian Cup in China, which starts on July 17.

Korean sports writers likened Bonfrere's no-nonsense approach to that of compatriot Guus Hiddink, who steered South Korea to the World Cup semi-finals on home soil.

"He (Bonfrere) scares me", midfielder Lee Kwan-woo was quoted as saying in the Joongang Ilbo newspaper after Bonfrere's first training session.

South Korea have home friendlies against Bahrain and Trinidad & Tobago early next month.

Ha ... hopefully, Bonfrere "scares" Lee Kwan-woo in a good way! Let's take the Asian Cup and make some noise in the Olympics!

LOL.... Oh man, this guys gives me the chuckles, everytime I read that article. Well, fellas, I see the Korean NT in for a change, for better or for worse, well.... That is a big question mark there. :-D

From the articles I read doing Yahoo! searches, this guy was not held in the highest regard in the soccer world. Like what the previous posters are saying, if this is the best the KFA can find... then BLEH!

Well, if Bonfrere is aiming to achieve the same success as his fellow countryman, he's on the right road so far... after all, when Hiddink was first appointed back in 2000, he was met with pessimism, derision and a huge cloud of doubt over his head. With this similarity, I hope Bonfrere not only shares the same nationality as Hiddink, but also the same success.

I'll give the man a chance. After all, it's not his fault our national team has underperformed. Now with the boot up their arses perhaps they'll start to remember the pride they're supposed to have when they don on the red shirt.

Hiddink also brought with him the experience of having coached a squad that played beautiful football in 98. Sorry for the pessimism but I really can't stand this hiring and think it's f***** rubbish. So coach Jo-eun-hyung thinks we shouldn't expect the national squad to accomplish what they accomplished under Guus, eh? Thanks for that riveting insight, Bro. Most honest fans knew that already. But what the hell kind of a message are you sending your players? When the hell did KFA become Kentucky Fried Assmunchers? Sorry....

God sent John the Baptist to pave the road for Christ. I only hope and pray Bonfrere's (what kind of a Dutch name is this anyways?!) head is served on a silver platter four months prior to Germany '06 and the savior returns as the redeemer. O, man...I've reverted to biblical similies. And I'm Buddhist! Damn you KFA!

Sorry, I meant no offense. I'll be ok after a nap.
