If he got merchandising rights in China like he got from LAG, there is a huge potential for him to make coin - which he can then use to buy into LAG.

But it's China though. Life in the States is so much better.

Everything has it's price. High income individuals can be convinced to live in less than desirable locations with money. The other way to say that is, they are willing to live and work in more amenable locations for less money. I would totally site my dissertation here but that would give up my identity :p

Furthermore, as the Cadaver said, it's a good move for Brand Beckham. There's sooooo many people in China gaining enough in wealth to pay for soccer games and merchandise so the financial benefit to Beckham goes far beyond the salary they'll give him.

Vegas will pay out 4 to 1 for bids that Beckham's next club will be in China. 6 to 1 if you bet on Shanghai. I can't decided which to take myself.

I wonder if Victoria's brand would translate to China? I would think so (petite women) and if they both go I would think it opens up a huge market for them both.

China makes complete sense to me. Becks and his advisor likely realize it doesn't make sense for him to play in any of the stronger leagues at this point. If he does his choices are to either be a regular starter on one of the league's weaker teams or a bench warmer on a top team, neither of which are appealing PR-wise or to David's desire to always to be on the field and to always be competing for trophies. In China he could be a starter for a team in contention for a championship and continue to positively reinforce Brand Beckham across Asia's mega-population.

As far as lifestyle - this obviously is a very temporary one to two year deal so he could either leave his family here or take them with him for a "cultural sabbatical" and keep his home in LA to return to. (BTW David - If you are reading this and you do the latter I will be glad to house-sit for you while you are away. I'm very neat - or at least the women I have over will be! :))

PS - If I were in Vegas I would jump all over the prop of him playing in China getting 4-1 odds. We know he is going to be playing somewhere next season and no other league makes nearly as much sense.

As long as he knows what he's doing and doesn't put himself in a bad situation, I'll be fine with it.

I think I may have to phone-a-friend in Vegas. I've given some more thought to the lifestyle of China. I bet it's just fine for multimillionaires in Shanghai and Beijing. He'll probably do alright.

I have to chip in because I like skydog and really hate to see him losing money. Becks and his agent would be crazy to sign a deal with Shanghai Shenhua. Shenhua's boss, Zhujun, is a con man. I seriously doubt he or his agent would not talk to Drogba and his agent before if they really take any deal in consideration.

Oh yes...If The Mirror's report is true - that Becks and Mrs. Becks are enrolling their kids in London school which is not to be named - then we will see Becks in France/Italy/Spain/Scotland/German/London this year! ;)

You may be correct. But he may also go to recently promoted Shanghai East Asia F.C. or Beijing Guoan.

Thanks for worrying about my welfare Sanda - somebody should since I don't do a very good job!

Didn't know that about the Shenhua owner but I Wikipedia'd the league and saw that the team hasn't been very good lately - 11th place in 2011 and 9th in 2012. I was thinking he could go to another team - like Beijing Guoan who have finished 2nd and 3rd in the past two seasons and had an average attendance of 35-40k in the past couple of years. Beijing is where he would most want to be anyway, right? Or are the rich celebrities more likely to be in Shanghai? (And by rich celebrity I don't mean Drogba or Anelka.)

The main downside I see is the very strict quota of 4 non-AFC players, 3 of which can be on the field at a time. So that means a) a lot of competition for those international spots and b) a bit of culture shock for Becks to play with 30 Chinese teammates and only 3 non-Asian teammates (currently apparently one native English speaker on the team). But the restrictions are relaxed a bit for teams that qualify for the AFC Champions League and Beijing Guoan may have qualified - 3rd place means they had a playoff to get in but if they did that would allow then to have 6 non-AFC players. (Amazing what you can find out from Wikipedia.)

Trivia Question: At some point in their histories Beijing Guoan and the LA Galaxy simultaneously had "American" players on their rosters that shared both their first and last names. What was the name of the player(s)?

    From today's MLS newsletter:

"We’ve heard about how former LA Galaxy star David Beckham has an option to join MLS as an owner. It can only help his future club that he is reportedly mulling a salary of $403,800 a week with China’s Shanghai Shenua."

BTW, I sort of think if I was making $403K/wk I might be able to live very nicely in China.
