Thanks man, appreciate it. Alot has changed over time, but there is still some real gold out here on this forum, and I enjoy browsing through everyday. Unfortunately, I can't contribute as much as I would like to, since I haven't played real football for a while, but I do try to use my skills developed as an architect, to think critically about the new boots on the scene. My gf knows that I will never pass any sports store without inspecting the latest boots on the market. Damn! The way Ruud disappeared from United still amazes me - although not very quietly done, it was rather swift! Every weekend during the Vodafone era, he was banging goals in for Utd. I really hated him as a young Gooner, but nowadays I remember him quite fondly. Do you remember what boots he was wearing during the 'Keown Incident"? I remember RvN suddenly switching to the Tiempo's, and thought they looked rather silly on his seemingly skinny legs. I never realized that he had a different on his Vapors during the Euro's - nice spot. He sure did look smart in the Legends - alot better than the day Henry suddenly jogged onto the field in a pair of black Legend 1's. If I recall, he was nursing an achilles injury. It seemed to do the trick, as he notched up a fair few goals against Portsmouth that day. Here's a pic of RvN in the custom MVII. I doubt many Man Utd fans would have guessed that a certain RvP would soon replace RvN.
Just heard that the Vapor IXs are about to be announced publicly by Nike - keep an eye out for pictures. From what I've seen (official photos) they look really surprisingly good. I'm hopeful of an improved fit, better durability and that same soft upper. Anyway, thought you might be interested. I believe they are set to retail from around the 21st January time.
Was thinking of wearing my retro and orange firm ground Nike mecurials on an artificial 3G pitch and was wondering if this would damaged boots any more than wearing them on a natural surface?
Artificial surfaces will always be a lot harder on boots than natural surfaces. How much harder depends on a lot of variables so it's hard to say exactly how much harder.
I think most people go through this at some point. For me, I realized that back in high school I wore my boots probably a half size too big (I notice most high school age kids tend to wear their boots too big), so after that I tried cramming my foot into boots that were MUCH too small. After losing several toenails, getting huge blisters, and boots never truly "breaking in", I gave up on that and just started buying my "normal" size. My feet have thanked me for it.
How does E8 Vapor IVs compare in size to the normal synthetic? (I've never played in a pair of vapor IVs but when I tried a pair on I felt like I needed half a size up)
Was thinking along the lines of would thr surface damage the upper due to its material (ie: mark it or scuff it) and would the upper be prone to coming away from the sole? And would the surface also wear down or damage the blades sufficiently more on the 3G surface...
Yes to all of that. Using that sole plate on 3G also isn't the safest thing in the world, either IMO. But a lot of people use bladed stud patterns on 3g with no problems, so that's up to you.
So I just went to exchange my Gatos for a half size larger. They run small and the 8.5 just wasn't going to work. Kinda funny how it turned out because I just started looking around to see what else they might have and they had some Mystic indoors in the Clash colorway in 9 for $20, so I was pretty set on those. Until I saw some Gatos in the nearly identical (to the black/orange I was returning) black/red colorway, also for $20 in size 9 so I went with those. I actually think the black/red looks a little better. So I got some better looking and better fitting Gatos, and got $20 back (originally paid around $40 for the other Gatos)! Nice.
Those Vapor things are ludicrous. They weigh virtually nothing, kinda like wearing tight slippers. Now slippers are nice, but I wouldn't play football in them. I've always played best when comfortable in my boots, and the most comfortable I've worn were Specialis about 1o years ago. Conical studs, soft leather, lightish and brilliant. New Balance made some great boots too. Had some Quasar's, they were rubbish, and some fantastic Patrick Gold Cups with alloy studs. I understand the need to advance and innovate, but it seems to me that too much effort is invested in gimmickry.
While I think we can all agree that lighter boots don't actually make you faster, I do see how they can give you a mental edge and sometimes that's all you need. I used to think speed boots were stupid until I got a pair of v1.11 sl and loved them. And while I wouldn't pay the outrageous retail prices of most speed boots and I would be reluctant to wear them in an organized game due to protection issues, I can definitely see why people prefer them.
I had my IV's in uk 9.5's and they were fine, Had the euro's too and the k-niketowns both in a 9.5(though i could have gotten the niketown in a 9 due to them being leather) its the IV SL they are about half a size big... also be careful of the heel pads, I never had any issues but many many people have issues with blisters
Were these the nike 'classic' boots with the yellow accents? I remember t=the indoor versions of those boots were FANTASTIC! Super soft, but pricey too.
Yep...they were around for a while. There was the Air Rio that came out in like 1995-96 and it was a total clunker, but they redesigned it in 97 and it was the start of something pretty good; it was very similar to the Tiempo in style but wider and more colorful with the neon accents. The 1998 model was the high water mark, IMO.
I actually found my E8s to be a little tight. I had the same size i've had in all my vapors a size 6. But i remember when i wore those they gave me terrible cramps. I think it was down the lace cover which was a bit thicker than on the synthetic boots. It didn't seem to have much give to it. I only wore them once and then just decided to keep them as part of my collection. If i had of wanted to wear them more i probably would have gone half a size up. appleCORR
I nearly bought some seaweed Vapors just from Locker Room in the Bullring, they were down to £70 but they didn't have my size.
Hmmm, the silver colourway is tempting but ill stcik with mv8s till black/white mv9s are out in summer
