It's not smart to only carry 2 goalies. I would be baffled if we didn't pick someone else up. Biggest question will what type of guy we pick up (money and expected place among seitz and sanchez). It's sad to see Hartman go, but I understand that it was probably necessary. Money we would be paying Hartman could do more good elsewhere. It was nice to have Seitz and Sanchez learn from Hartman, but there's a point where they they won't improve due to the lack of playing time. Heck, Sanchez didn't even get reserve minutes until Seitz had his operation. Also, I think it's hard to call our defense porous and inexperienced. Just because Ugo and John could be gone does not mean that Hedges and Pertuz will be our CBs. Right now I'm hoping to get through this 'losing' period and looking forward to seeing who we'll bring in.
Hartman's likely insistence for a big raise probably makes this a no-brainer in the front office. Sure, the team wants Kevin and his skills and experience back, but the roster simply has too many major needs that need tending. Losing Kevin actually creates money. Here's some additional thoughts on 3rd Degree.
I understand that, but I understood it to mean we're looking for a starter. Maybe I read too much into it.
It make sense on one money level - HOWEVER - that is if you have any confidence this "brain" trust can use this cap space to bring in actual field talent. I know they are good at letting good players go for nothing (McCarty, Chavez etc...and now Hartman) but I have not seen an equal inflow of talent back into the club. And from what I saw last season we needed a kick ass MLS goalie - which is what we had. Now we do not really know. Hartman is an all-time MLS great.
Yup, basically an unfortunate salary cap casualty. We'll re-sign Chris Seitz, and he'll compete with Sanchez for the starting gig. My gut tells me we'll then grab Jaime Ibarra from SMU as a homegrown signing to be our #3. If people weren't paying attention to him, he was named Conference USA Player of the Year in 2012. He led the league in goals against average (0.75), save percentage (0.880), and tied for the lead in shutouts (4) and saves (44) during C-USA play. I don't want us to use one of our draft picks on a #3 keeper. We need to try to get impact players with pics #7 and #20 there. Maybe a supplemental pick or cheap waiver claim.
http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11713/8071619/Gonzalez-set-for-US-talks What came of this rumor? We had a thread a page ago which had everyone scratching their heads. Maybe the big picture is becoming clearer?
Better to let a player go a year too early rather than a year too late. In my mind Hartman appeared to have gained a little weight and did not make some of the plays he used to make. Much of my criticism came in the first half of the season and I thought he got better as the year went on, but if he's really asking for a significant raise I understand not giving it to him and cutting ties. My faith in Seitz is neglible. He was horrid - I mean, HORRID - for Philly a few years back. Maybe a second chance at being a #1 and he'd be ready this time. I certainly haven't seen enough of him to know but I'd be wary. I'm praying we'll one day get to see Sanchez as the #1 in a FCD uniform before he moves on to bigger and brighter things, but this upcoming season seems too soon. Maybe Hesmer? Cannon? either at discount? Not sure where they turn.
Let me throw in here the complete possibility that Hartman didn't want a raise, just wanted to stay at $185K, but FCD wanted to give him a pay cut due to age, and their roster needs… that is possible too. either way, Dallas needs salary space and I think Kevin was the victim of that.
We only needs salary space if we actually use it, and use it wisely, which we'll find out soon enough. But I'm less than optimistic we will use the cap space to bring in quality talent. There's been a huge vacuum of talent leaving this team and it hasn't been filled. Anyone know how much allocation money we have? Why couldn't we get in on a deal like Will Johnson for allocation money? I'm already weary of other teams being aggressive and making moves while we're doing nothing and I hear nothing.
RSL let Johnson choose where he wanted to go among his suitors and he chose Portland. I don't know if FCD was involved either way but it sounded like Johnson had his heart set on Portland and RSL - due its longstanding ties to the player and out of respect - granted his wishes.
I listened to Schellas' interview on Extra Time Radio from 3 days ago and he's talking as if there's almost zero chance of Hartman signing for less than he values himself at. There was considerable talk about Seitz being the starter and Sanchez being awesome for 18 but not quiet ready to be a starter. SH said Sanchez will be the #2 and get minutes next season. Not keeper related but JDG is gone for sure. Probably Germany because he has two kids living there.
While probable, I don't think "for sure" is appropriate of the situation. He is very happy in Dallas but family is first (as it should be).
Schellas said both sides love the other but FCD wouldn't pay him anywhere near his market value. Which makes me wonder how long La Liga skins can keep a player's value inflated. He's not better than MLS level but his market value is. Must have a great agent.
I'm one of Gato's biggest fans, and I'd love for him to come back to LA as a back up. But when I saw that JOSH SAUNDERS was making $75k.... it really struck me as an odd situation.
Well, nobody picked up Hartman in the expansion draft. Is there any hope of him coming back at a lower salary?
We did let Chavez go for nothing. That's kind of misleading to say. Blas Perez is in hoops because we let Chavez go.
Well, I think Seitz showed enough in his limited opportunities last year (3-4 games?) to warrant an opportunity. We'll see how the competition between Seitz and Sanchez goes. And surely they'll bring in another keeper either as a homegrown or as a lower draft pick. Perhaps there's some thought to bringing in Jaime Ibarra as the #3?
Got to be honest that I am very nervous about the GK'ing situation. Don't ever recall us winding up on the positive side of the ledger with Seitz between the posts. Am I wrong? It wasn't so much his Gk'ing per se, as much as the confusion in the back line when he was in charge.
Don't remember where but saw a rumor that Hartman might sign with NY Cosmos. I believe they are in whatever the second division is called now.
Your concerns are valid, but I don't think Hartman or Iker Casillas would have put FCD on the positive side during that part of the season.
Not really. If you read the interview with Clavijo, as I assume you have, you will note it was a financial decision. The club certainly made Hartman aware of what his wages were going to be. Both sides knew what was on the table, and there was no meeting of the minds. Hartman could have come back if he wished. There is speculation above that the money Hartman would have made will be spent on another player. Now that we know what has happened, I beleive that Clark wanted to remodel the garage. Dead but dreaming, Scipio Diabolus, vox fatum. Contra. Forever in horns.
