Okay, it's looking like the Red Bull corporation is reconsidering being part of MLS.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ld-strengthen-despite-David-Beckham-exit.html

Quote from the article: "There are also suggestions that Red Bull may be reconsidering its investment in the MLS, which potentially opens up a second New York franchise."

Also, the article states that Manchester City is interested in becoming an investor of a "City" franchise in New York and possibly in other cities around the world.

Coincidence that MLS just trademarked the name "City FC" (and "Empire FC")?

    Probably not.

    http://www.empireofsoccer.com/mls-trademarks-empire-fc-and-city-fc/empirefctrademark/

Logically, it would seem that Manchester City wouldn't want "City FC" to be in Harrison, NJ. It would want to be in New York City proper.

And that would leave the current Red Bulls franchise in Harrison open to rebranding.

Again, logically speaking, it would be a no-brainer to bring the Cosmos brand back to the Cosmos' longstanding northern New Jersey/Manhattan (PATH-accessible) fanbase.

That would certainly be my vote.

Start saving your "Red Bulls" memorabilia. Could be good collectors' items soon.

I'm starting this new thread because there is now a confluence of two story-lines that I've written about in two separate threads. It is now becoming one unified story and it should be discussed here.

    Let's review....

Reports from official sources are stating that the Red Bull corporation is rethinking its investment in MLS and may be looking to sell the existing team in Harrison.

In the same article, it states Manchester City wants a "City FC" franchise in New York.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ld-strengthen-despite-David-Beckham-exit.html

Then MLS trademarked the name "City FC" (and "Empire FC").

    http://www.empireofsoccer.com/mls-trademarks-empire-fc-and-city-fc/empirefctrademark/

Then I speculated in the "Perfect Designated Player for the Red Bulls" thread that I would put some money down on David Beckham going to the New York Cosmos in 2013.

And now, according to official reports, it looks like my prediction may be spot on.

    http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/teams/cosmos2.php?article_id=32320

The writing seems to be on the wall, and I'm guessing this is the way it will play out:

    1) David Beckham will go to the NASL's New York Cosmos in 2013.

    2) MLS will announce that Manchester City will become the owner of the 20th MLS franchise. It will be placed in Queens and named "City FC" (or "City FC New York" or "New York City FC" or some variation on the theme).

    3) MLS will announce that the Red Bull corporation will sell the existing franchise in Harrison to the new Cosmos ownership and the Harrison franchise will be re-branded as the "Cosmos."

    4) In 2014, the new "Cosmos" will begin play (with a combination of current Red Bulls players, 2013 Cosmos players, and new players like Kaka) at the re-branded stadium in Harrison.

    5) In 2014, David Beckham will play one last MLS season in a Cosmos uniform in Harrison. And then he will retire and become part owner of the team.

    For what it's worth....

    I love this scenario.

    Connect the dots and discuss.

And, if only for the names what Doggy say make sense, but I doubt that the Cosmos if get lucky to be a future NY team; that they be willing to leave some other team to still the city from they face, I think that if the Cosmos put it together will be in New York City and not in Harrison, any way Manchester always can rename the NYRB, Manchester NY-FC, or just New York FC..... The Cosmos born at Randall Island in the 70s and they will live or die as New Yorkers if they want to succeed and I think that is what they want to do....

The Cosmos were born in 1971 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. They only spent two years on Long Island in 1972 and 1973 where they averaged 4,282 and 5,782 per game, respectively. There is no historic "Cosmos" constituency from Long Island or Queens.

But during the eight seasons at Giants Stadium in New Jersey, the Cosmos averaged 34,352 fans per game.

The real Cosmos fanbase is in northern New Jersey and Manhattan -- in other words, it's the current Red Bulls fanbase and their offspring that have carried over from the old days.

Manchester City will not want "City FC" to be in New Jersey. It will want "City FC" to be in New York City.

The Cosmos, however, already have a history of bridging the New York/New Jersey divide -- and could do so again -- and this time they would have the added advantage of a PATH train connecting directly to Manhattan.

It only makes sense to return the "Cosmos" name to the fanbase that built it.

    Queens can have "City FC."

And the Red Bulls can re-brand to Cosmos with this marketing juggernaut at the helm....

I'm also fine with this scenario, the only problem is if the team in Harrison rebrands again its going to lose fans I'm sure. It'll be a joke. And if this speculation is true, it can only hurt the offseason the Red Bulls are about to have, right when we are trying to rebuild...

Yap....But you have to remember that they did that with 2o+ internationals players, that they fan base have since then move away, getting too old or die....and beside they "the Cosmos" are broke and need all the help they can have, and that only they will have if they satay in NY City because isn't a legit team that represent NYC and they can be that team if they stay...

That would be a collector's item like people selling WW2 German gear on Ebay.

A remembrance of the interregnum of disrepute.

Better to burn it in Tompkins Sq park, at least you'd keep some bums warm that way.

It would be funny, though were that to happen, after all of the years with the hope of a new Cosmos being the alternative to RB, only to become the very thing one had fought against.

Cosmos if he will come to the MLS will be in another city, not NY, they have not the "Mojo" to be a MLS team and beside they don't have the money to pay for the franchise and that is why they invent that history that Beckham was coming to the Cosmos, just a fabric lie to be in the front page for a day....

There is a Soccer Town hall meeting set for Tuesday, Dec. 4th at 6:30 pm at the Queens Theartre (next door to the Queens Museum of Art) in Flushing Meadow Park to discuss a new stadium . The anti forces will be there, so it makes sense for NYC fans to attend. http://www.mlstoqueens.com/

I would now point out the front page of this very site. I would also note that the Cosmos' opposition for an NY2 franchise will in all probability be headed by Chuck Blazer, a man who has been infighting in the world of FIFA for more years than I could count, and knows an awful lot about where certain bodies are buried. Odds of another explosive allegation about the Cosmos owners a week before a choice is to be made is running about 5-2 now.

The denoument to this should be very very interesting (if not forthcoming anytime soon)
