So in what city will Beckham use his ownership option?

It will be either NY(new team) or LA Galaxy. In both cases Beckham will be part-owner and more exposed in public and media. He is not greatest player but for MLS he is what Pele was for NASL People who work for David are looking 5-10 years ahead. League is much better organized now and there is benefit for Beckham, MLS and in my opinion for all of us fans. Time will tell!

MLS is the only league where Becks can invest in and not flush money down the toilet. The salary cap controls costs while ensuring that bigger markets can pull ahead if they wish to. Also, with him being privy to the potential growth of the league, he would be well versed in the types of dividends he could take in the long term.

It such a low risk investment at this point that I think he'd be crazy not to at least commit to owning a minor stake.

Which is the main reason I don't see him investing in NYC2. He'd have to sink a lot of money into a club that will be expected to spend big year in and year out...compare that a team such as Dallas, Colorado--maybe even Chicago--and he'll likely have a much better chance of seeing a return on his investment.

I love the idea of a new team in San Diego (it's America's Finest City after all), and DB might have plans in that direction. However, even though I personally would think it's worth it, whoever decides to put a team there will not have an easy time either finding approval for his stadium plan or a source of public funding. I imagine both will be hard to come by. I'm guessing he doesn't try it.

I could be wrong and he could be committed to braving SD or NYC2, but an easier path would (IMO) be picking one of Orlando, Tampa Bay, or Ft Lauderdale (not Miami) and bring one of them into MLS.

Although, maybe Morrissey and Snoop Dog would be willing to go in with him on Chivas...

lol that's a great pic. But I don't know what the likelihood of DB going in with cross-town rivals.

Maybe Orlando or NY2 (with a long shot SD) highest in the running.

The last I recall hearing it has been reported, Becks and his posse have narrowed the sites to Miami, San Diego or Atlanta. I don't think it much matters where the team is located. With him being involved with Simon Fuller, he with locate the team in city he feels he can have the best chance for success and a return on his investment. Perhaps, their maybe some merit to the idea that he took a pay cut with the Galaxy for perhaps special consideration on a stadium deal with AEG. If he goes to South Florida it would not be to Ft. Lauderdale (but I can envision him wanting to purchase the naming rights to "Strikers" from Traffic USA.), not sexy enough to recuit the players he would be want, but Miami with South Beach, looks like Becks kind of place. San Diego would be conivent but it's a hard town to get anything done. Atlanta seems to me to be logically a long shot. However with the league looking to soon add a team to Orlando, they would naturally look for a regional rival. Either way we will be not know the true location till around 2015, he plans to play as long as he can, which means at least two more years. Thus making it not till 2017 when his team would take the field for the first time. Therfore this would most likely make Beckham's team the 22nd franchise.

At this point, I don't see Snoop Dogg buying into an MLS team.

Snoop Lion, I'm less certain about.

If league stays at 20 for a while, Becks can either be a partner with NYC2 or if the league wants a southern presence again, move Chivas to Miami and Becks can partner there. Both are "star" locations and both will need Becks to build some identity. I agree Becks has enough friends to get an ownership group together. The only issue I see is his family really likes LA. If he can handle his involvement from distance, no problem. If he wants to be on site, then NYC is best, as he would be closer to England for purposes of business affairs. If the family issues prevail, and needs to be closer to LA or the west coast, could buy into Chivas (although seems like a long shot) or agree with other post, maybe a partner with SJ- Wolf wouldn't mind since he has a stadium costing him some money right now. Will be very interesting. I also agree, best bet is to have this issue set up by the time next year rolls around. I am sure the league wants Becks last visit to all the road cities to have big crowds and help build a buzz for what he is going to be doing after his playing days.

MLS isn't staying at 20 for a period of time.. Orlando is already chomping at the bit to get in and Orlando's owner said MLS is looking at another Southeast city as well... Then there is San Antonio whose numbers may get them a look and they are building a SSS that an be expanded to MLS size...

Since Beckham can't use that ownership franchise fee discount in New York or Miami, I say he won't use it at all. Miami is far too much of a risk and any other city isn't sexy enough.

Um, being that Miami is neither New York or Los Angeles, the actual cities in which Beckham can't use his discount, I don't see why he couldn't use his discount in Miami.

Santa Barbara had 13,000 fans for their college clash with Cal Poly last night at Harder Stadium. I wonder if Beckham were to buy the Chivas and move them there? Seems like a nice area to start a pro team and if I'm not mistaken, its even Jurgen Klinsmann "new" home town......

Possibly because not too many people care about them but mostly because LA and MLS only care about those famed LA Gals.

Santa Barbara County only has 420k people. No way it could support an MLS team. College soccer tickets are very cheap. When I went to Cal Poly, we got in for free with our student IDs.

I'm guessing that's probably not the case at UCSB, but they probably get a nice discount for being students. There's a difference between paying $5-15 for a ticket for a team you have a built in emotion investment in and paying $20+ for a new team trying to build a fan base.

Just realized and found out after I posted that students get in for free or almost nothing so I guess that theory of having or supporting a pro club is out........

I see Mr. Beckham either getting a part stake in the Galaxy or a new expansion club, perhaps to start the same year as NY2 in 2016 with Orlando coming into the league in 2015 provided they get approval on a new SSS. This would bring the league to 22 teams, which is where I believe the league stay put on expansion for next 10 to 12 years.

It is already known that for the Beckham expansion team, he has narrowed his choices down to three locations, Atlanta, Miami and San Diego. It has also been stated that getting a new SSS built would be no problem for his ownership group to finance. With this in mind and his statement that plans to live in the LA area after retirement, San Diego makes the most sense. Miami seems too risky for him to invest and Atlanta seems to be a long shot with it's history of wishy-washy support for pro sports teams. Also I believe that the likelyhood is that Vergara will sell Chivas USA to another group which will relocate them to perhaps somewherre like St. Louis. This would make the league all the more want to add another team to the Southern California/Southwest region. San Diego was on the list for one of the orginal franchises in 1996 and has been on the list for an expansion team for years, waiting for the right local investors. David Beckham, Simon Fuller and their ownership group maybe just what the league has been waiting on.
