Chris Hayes made the point that Romney chopped off the right wing tonight. That's a good analysis for tonight. How that will play out over the next 2-3 days as people contrast Romney of tonight with Romney over the last 15 months will be interesting. Chris Matthews is gonna have a stroke. He's killin' Obama for his performance saying that Obama needs to watch MSNBC to be better prepared. Pretty funny.
MSNBC is doing something interesting...they're putting tweets from pundits and politicos along the bottom of the screen. The main hope for liberals is that Obama trapped Romney into saying things that can be turned into effective ads. FWIW. I'm not buying it.
Obama looked fatigued & disinterested. Did he mention the 47% video at all? Jeez - overcourteous and he said "we agree" like a dozen times. When Romney spoke Obama looked down at his notes and smiled or frowned. Not great on the body language. Win Romney in Round 1
Fact checking on CNN right now. Obama's claims that Romney will cut taxes by 5 trillion dollars. CNN claims it's false. Romney claims his tax plan will not add to the deficit. CNN says it's also false.
Here's something so simple that Obama could've done & gotten a laugh: Mitt - "I wouldn't fund PBS. I love Big Bird, I love you Jim. But I wouldn't keep paying for it" Obama could've said - "I love Big Bird and you as well, Jim. And my girls loved Sesame Street when they were young. PBS isn't costing us much in the scheme of things and I think America likes the diversity of public tv" All he did was complain about the time he had to respond. Lame.
David Plouffe is on MSNBC. He's used the word "dishonestly" twice in a minute. Goddamn, I wish Obama had said that shit.
There is no doubt that Romeney won this debate....Sure, he lied a lot....but Obama never talked to him directly and called him out on those lies....and all that looking down at his papers....NOt a good day for the President, AT ALL ...Considering the amount of ammunition Romney had been giving to the Dems all campaign long (not even counting Ryan's BS!??!!) this is just inexcusable..... Obama needs to drink coffee or something before these things.... NOt the end of the world, but it just sucks
Obama's team hasn't made too many wrong moves in beating Clinton, beating McCain and now running ahead of Romney is every swing state and putting states into Leaning/Likely Obama every week. So, when they decide to lay back and let Mitt take the offensive and hang himself on his so-called plans ... well I'm going to cut Obama some slack. We liberals hate this "cool Obama" stuff and want the jugular, but Obama's done pretty well not going down that road.
One last post before I hit the hay. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2012/10/my_quick_read.php?ref=fpblg I hope he's right.
As Whip would say, the president got azzwoop tonight. The opportunities were there, but he just didn't seize them. Hope he can recover.
Doubt it..to use baseball terms....Strike one... two more strikes/debates like this and Obama is out.... and i friggin' wish i was kidding.... BTW Loved MSNBC's coverage.... they were tough on the Prez the way they should be after looking at that poor poor performance..Whoever said Maddow/Hayes would have done a better job is on point.... Maddow in 20 seconds or so brought up the very valid lines of attack that Obama could have used on Romney ...and never got around to do in 90 friggin' minutes.... I remember her mentioning Bain..the 47%, his job as governor or Massachusetts etc.. Mathews is right that if he had no time to watch cable news at all...he needs to try at least a little ...just for the sake of calling out people's lies and/or 180 degrees turns, which will surely continue the next two debates....
Post-debate MSNBC interview with David Plouffe: Maddow: why not attack so viewers can see the 47% thrown in Romney's face? Plouffe: "everyone knows about the 47% and we'll be hammering on that in the swing states. Romney said things tonight that will not play well in coming days in those states." They love this ground war stuff. Hope Ohio is as safe as they think.
I think they feel comfortable up 3-1 in the 75th minute. It's there to be lost, but you can hang back and absorb a little pressure,. Try and hit them on the break.
Obama won the debate because he said "Americans make the best cars in the world." Ohio in the bank. That's all that counts.
