that last part is how we ended up with Gil instead of him being at Sporting. Given how that team/franchise has developed, I wonder if he regrets it? And Houston didn't protect Clark's rights. No expansion team took them. They could have, but they didn't. People all across the league were way confused when Portland made that pick. It made zero sense. The only way they get him is if he falls so far out of form across the pond that he can't find a gig anywhere and is in need of a last gasp recover. Why would you want that player? Get over the Findley thing. If he does come back to MLS, it won't be until the second half of next season at the earliest. RSL needs to go find a speedy guy from down south who isn't out of a job (Bonfigli) but is instead a good player that can compete (like Olave and Espy were)
I think the bigger factor for Clark was when he gave the WC game to Ghana in '10. Seriously, who loses the ball like that in a WC match?
Why keep bringing PJ into this? At the time of the draft, Paulo was a player that was making good on the promise overall. He was a speedy player that actually attacked the goal. It's not like we could've foreseen him picking up a season long injury and coming back less than stellar. At the time it was a wise choice to have him protected. The only time I'd ever consider protecting someone's rights is if they were head an shoulders above everyone else in talent. At the same time though, a player like that likely wouldn't be coming back within 3 years anyway, so even then it's probably not the best move. Findley is a good guy, but not so special that you throw away a spot on him.
And, Findley is still in England! So far, RSL has lost ****-all in the transaction. PJ hasn't been the best 3rd striker in the league (or even in the top half of 3rd strikers in the league), but it's not like we could've had Findley instead. Phills, it's time to drop this one. Unless Robbie returns to MLS and lights the league up in Portland, you have absolutely no case that RSLFO made a bad choice in protecting PJ.
Herediano with the early PK to take the lead at home. But Tauro apparently isn't rolling over and giving up, scoring their first goal of the tournament to level 1-1 at 25 gone.
Definitely doable. A 2 goal home win does the trick. RSL has to find their offense a bit before that game though.
Why would RSL not move on to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Herediano? What is the next tie-breaker after head to head?
I thought the next tie-breaker was goal differential. If RSL wins 1-0, then it will be a tie in points, head to head results, goal differential, total goals scored, and total goals scored against. What tie breaker comes after GD?
ESPN's tracker said that there were a 4 Herediano players picked up yellow cards. Are any of them out for the next game?
Marvin Obando seems to have received yellow cards in consecutive games, so he is out. He is one of their starting defenders.
If you go here you can see we're behind by just one in wins, goal differential and goals scored -> http://soccernet.espn.go.com/tables/_/league/concacaf.champions/concacaf-champions-league?cc=5901 Rules here -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012–13_CONCACAF_Champions_League_Group_Stage If RSL wins 1-0, I believe all the tiebreakers fail and it comes down to "drawing of lots". Any goal by Herediano gives them an edge on the #3 tiebreaker (head-to-head away goals). So a 2-1 RSL win would allow Herediano to advance. You really can't concede a goal unless you're up by 3. It's going to be difficult. Hopefully Herediano will freak out from travel and altitude. A 2 goal win gives it to RSL - but that's non-trivial. Feels like a game where Mick might hold Rocky back for 35 or 40 minutes and then unleash the hidden right and go for the kill down the stretch...and trust the back line, Rimando and altitude to keep a clean sheet.
If RSL wins 1-0, then RSL's GD goes to +3, while Hered's goes from its current +3 to +2. Thus, RSL goes thru if they win 1-0.
Keeping the clean sheet with a 1-0 win is the easier path. Having to rely on winning 3-1 wouldn't be nearly as easy, imo.
Sorry I'm late, did someone page me? Fortunately, RSL are one of the outfits that actually bothers to read tournament regulations, and they provided a thorough explanation of the necessary outcomes on their website.
Yeah, without Sabo we have to defend like hell and hope for a goal Though, as they say, the best defense is a good offense. In the next few league games, Kreis needs to work on getting the team ready for this game. That means you need to rest Sabo. I don't mind him being a late sub, but this team needs to get minutes where it doesn't have Sabo on the pitch so they know what to do in this match. What are the odds we win 2-1? This feels like that FCD playoff matchup from 2 years ago where we kept our unbeaten home streak alive but lost on aggregate...
Could just get them some Chuck-A-Rama vouchers. I have a feeling this is going to be one difficult game. The instant they score, we can expect time wasting galore and an extreme bunker, especially if they score first.
