My point is Rangers v Isles is the Rangers biggest "derby" . You'll see more fights in the parking lot of the Coliseum, then you will the whole day of Rangers v Devils. I don't chant Daneyko Sucks. Its Potvin Sucks. Isles fans came up with the 1940 chant and won 4 cups in a row, Right after the Rangers went to the finals in 1979, and it was Potvin who injured our best scorer . NO Question its Rangers vFishsticks as the best rivalry in the area. As far as the moonshiner from KY, I just love reading his pain, I really do So I correct myself I know 2 Devils fan, forgot Ed. And to you 2 guys..Feck you with that hockey hun shite
I was wondering when someone local was going to answer the poster. I'm only a marginal hockey/Caps fan & I know the Ranger/Islanders rivalry is deeper starting with the the Islanders being around longer than the Devils. Where did the Devils even come from? Were they expansion or moved from somewhere?
So Jersey stole the Rockies from Colorado & then Colorado stole the Nordiques from Quebec. It's funny how BigSoccer Fan is so worried about MLS looking bush league if some teams relocate or are contracted. Meanwhile it's almost impossible to keep track of the movement of NBA & NHL teams. Shit I remember when there was a NBA team in Buffalo & possibly Pittsburgh.
You are correct.. Originally they were the Kansas City Scouts.... (too much reading of old yearbooks/media guides)
If teams are Contracted, that would be really bad for any league. Moving teams is just the way business is done in US sports.
Poor New Yorkers...so desperate for all of the attention that LA now gets. It's cute how you guys actually think that the rest of the country supports your whiny entitlement issues.
You really don't know NYC do you ? We could care less about another city. The LEAGUE wants this Cletus..doesn't matter what I want or you. Thats what you can't get through that thick skull of yours. Whinny New Yorkers..blah ..blah..blah..Thats all you go on about. It's not about that. it's about getting a NYC based team in the league, so they can get more advertising , TV money . Go look at MSG Networks for Sunday night. The Fizzy Drink all stars are playing Portland. A live TV event, will MSG show the game ? Nah Their pushing it to MSG+. Why ? are the NY Rangers on ? no..Knicks ? no. They would rather show the best of Boomer & Carlton..A radio program from the week before. Then show a John Duddy fight from 6 years ago. Which they show 3-5 times a week. LOL. Thats why .
I'm a new yorker and don't feeel desperate for attention. I just wake up every morning, get on my knees and thank god that I don't live in Kentucky.
Ramblings of a INBREED RED NECK.... go back to washing your klan out fit and listening to your banjo noise yall good old boys think is so wonderful down there in hazzard county... go show off what a backwards good christian you are by holding a rattle snake thinking it brings you closer to a red neck jesus that you think was born christmas night in Huntsville alabama......
Im curious to know something and im sure you guys can answer this for me. If someone bought out red bull and rebranded it as a New Jersey team, would it succeed? I remember reading an article awhile back quoting numerous people from Jersey who don't support the team because its called New York. Could a jersey/new york rivalry work in MLS? Also now that the Nets have moved to brooklyn, will the Nets fans from Jersey continue to support the team?
Well im not a guy that cares about the name - but i do know there are a lot that does. I think they would see an increase just by changing the name but not a lot. They need to market properly - i think a second team really helps RB because they can officially give up on the NY market outside of manhattan on focus on marketing to the area right around your stadium. Newark, Ironbound etc. As for your nets question http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2012/04/for_nets_fans_brooklyn_seems_s.html that might help answer that. And please read some of the comments - those fans are saying the same thing we are saying.
Don't know if this has been mentioned, but for the record, the distance between Newark and Flushing is 19 miles by car. Note: Harrison is too small a place to get distance information, but it is adjacent to Newark. http://www.distance-calculator.co.uk/usa-distance-newark-to-flushing.htm
Ok thx for that. Its interesting that something only 20 miles apart is considered like a different country for many fans in the new york area but i can understand the reasoning behind it. Here's hoping that the Redbulls/NY2 rivalry becomes an instant hit.
It really is - and im not saying its right - i know from looking at the map and seeing the distance you think "wow, NYers are being Lazy" i get it but the reality is, that 19 miles can take you about 2 hours. Sometimes more. And this isnt open road driving, this is bumper to bumper traffic which drives your mental state crazy. Its just not how people want to spend their summer Saturdays. Add in the other factors such as branding and poor marketing and where is the motivation for fans to even think about doing it?
Correction: The 19 miles is a straight line distance (red line on the map) as the crow flies. The driving distance is more, and depends on the route (blue line on the map). I estimate it to be 25-30 miles. http://www.distance-calculator.co.uk/usa-distance-newark-to-flushing.htm
This morning it took me 1 hour 15 minutes to get from Riverhead to Queens, then 1 more hour from Queens to Brooklyn. Yay.
If i get tickets to islanders games on weeknights - i can leave 6ish and normally make the game on time (710 puck drop) . I would say about 50 minutes with traffic. I get home in like 25. The biggest obstacle is from BK from the Kosckiusko to the Van Wyck - one you get past there, it might go slow but its much better.
And it took me over 2.5 hours to get home from Energy Drink Stadium a couple years ago using mass transit so it isn't just a driving issue.
Yea - where you live - its 45 - 50 minutes just to get into the city - and its only about 6 miles from the city
You don't know how New York is, you live in a different part of the world. Personally I couldn't care for either New York team, but the Cosmos would be 2 hours closer to where I live. I would still go to both teams games, but I couldn't care if the Red Bulls or the Cosmos made their league's playoffs.
