Another big match, a 3 points we must get vs. Atlanta if we hope to finish in the top 4. We simply can't drop points vs. the last place team.
Andy Herron is back from suspension, which certainly can't hurt our chances. Need the defense to step it up.
Look for the section of crazies in Red & Gold on the far side of the pitch, we should have a solid group of Striker Likers in ATL for the match. Follow @Flight_19 on Twitter for updates and pics from the road starting Thursday night!

Need another win is a fact. Maybe Andy & Aly up top can actually click this time? Maybe the midfield will realize that they have to play defense, too? We'll see.

Have fun, guys. I'll look for you Saturday night....

Paulo Jr will not be available, according to the Strikers dot com site. He has been recalled by RSL.

    2. It showed tonight. They can't play without his threat on the pitch. Strikers season will end quickly . They can't defend for shit, and they can't win on the road-which is a shame because they can score plenty.

Either new players or a new coach are needed for next season.

    This shite can't go on.

Problem with NASL is even in a perfect world, you don't know who can come back and for how long.

Just going to say this once:
Strikers are void at CB. Not a ringing endorsement of Lanky, but with him and Kirby gone, they have no one capable of playing the position. Stewart tries........but he's not the answer. Keep him, but add a couple with the skills to compete there.

I'd rather have Arrieta back than anything that passes for RB at the moment.

Shanovsky Sucks. He couldn't carry Arguez' jock. Thing is, this is probably Stahl's best position (DM)- so Lauderdale really may not need to chase an antidote.

Abe is done. FtL needs to find a way to develop Hassan at his own pace and provide another viable option up top WHEN Herron is hurt/suspended. There hasn't been enough depth up front since they've been back. Need moar options!

Mayen & Araujo were great in their roles.(Freeing Shriver/Anderson up to dominate) They just didn't stay. Having somebody on the other side who can play makes everybody better. Team needs a DT who can do more than rant at halftimes and post-games. They need somebody they're willing to listen to, and who can put the brakes on wayward cherry-pickers who refuse to team defend with timely subs and benchings.

it also happens to other teams, Yamada is named NASL player of the month june and a few weeks later he is gone

this is the sad reality of minor league soccer teams world wide :(

Well, at least they are scoring goals. Less hopeless than when nothing is going right.

True they are scoring goals. But according to "Fusionman Steve" the team will need to be re-branded the Fort Lauerale Strikers ( NO D ) if they don't tighten up.

Defense was again crap on Saturday. The marking was bad, but to their credit Atlanta's goals were all perfectly executed and placed. Matt had no chance on any of them.

If we're not going to win on the road then we HAVE to win these last 4 home games. That would give us a shot at that 4th place or better spot and the home game in round one of the playoffs.

At least we had fun on the trip though...

6 hours later and we were all significantly more tanned lmao. We met 2 more at the game, plus Walter Restrepo and Scott Gordon both had family and friends there making for a nice Strikers presence at the match.

The fact that we brought more people to Atlanta then we did to Tampa the last time quite clearly illustrates the idiocy of scheduling Strikers-Rowdies on the 4th of July, when nobody can go.

We all loved Martyn, but Atlanta's defense is worse than ours and he's been a mainstay in their team.

Agree we need a reliable CB though.

Again, no thanks. There's a reason Arrieta doesn't belong to a team this season.

Gordon has done fine. He's not the most solid defender, and he rarely gets forward, but the guy did get a goal and an assist Saturday. His problem is that he's a good utility player (can play anywhere across the back, cover for multiple positions), but he isn't great at any one position. He should only start when someone is injured/suspended.

If it's a new RB you want, the answer is Darnell King.

Yes, we all miss Arguez. Absolute shame the club failed to get him when Montreal loaned him out to Edmonton. He's the player we've missed most this season without a doubt.

    ...are you serious?

Ståhl was absolutely garbage when he played in the midfield at the start of last season. We used to joke about how awful the guy was. It wasn't until midway through the season (when Kirby retired and Hohlbein got injured) that Ståhl started to play well. This was because Shore moved him into CB where he was a rock. The guy was named to the NASL Best XI as a defender. He is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a midfielder.

Wrong. The few times Abe has actually gotten some minutes he's been fantastic. Case in point, the (second) 3-3 draw against Carolina.

The team could use another offensive weapon, and should try their hardest to get Paulo Jr. back on loan again.

For now, in terms of depth it needs to be 1) Herron, 2) Thompson, 3)Hassan.
Herron starts unless injury prevents him, in which case Abe gets the nod. Hassan is too inconsistent to be starting week in, week out. Until he can provide goals/assists regularly, he has no business being ahead of Abe in the pecking order.

Until he can provide regularly, he needs more help-and Abe has no business doing anything but coaching.

Not as far as I know. The guy is without a club.

I doubted King early on, and I'm sure you can find what I said about him on some other thread in this forum, however the few times he has played there he has looked more comfortable in that position than any of our "natural" RBs. Yes, he has made a few mistakes, and still has a lot to learn, but the young man certainly has all of the tools to make a quality RB.

I would take him over Gordon, Blake, Stewart, Orozco, Granado or any other player we have fielded at RB some point in the season. I'd take him over Arrieta, too.

If anyone was getting burnt, or caught too high up the past few games, it was the LB. And it wasn't Lance Laing, that's for sure.

We're gonna disagree about this one and that's fine. But anyone who watched him last season will tell you how bad he was when he played midfield, and what a revelation he was once he dropped to defense.

Suits up for PDL side Los Angeles Misioneros.

He did miss that costly penalty against Edmonton, but he scored an even more vital one against Tampa Bay. Not sure what you're seeing, but Abe is one of the hardest workers on the team.

    Nice try.

Abe has one goal and four assists in just 571 minutes, an average of one goal/assist every 114 minutes. That may not sound all that impressive, but compared to our star players like Mark Anderson, with 11 goals and 2 in 1,339 minutes, one goal/assist every 103 minutes; Andy Herron, with seven goals and two assists in 945 minutes, or one goal/assist every 105 minutes; or Walter Restrepo, who has 6 goals and 8 assists in 1,701 minutes, or one goal/assist every 121.5 minutes; Thompson isn't just providing regularly, he is proving that he can provide just as regularly as our stars.

    Better luck next time.

Wow. How disappointing. Our backline and defensive MF was ripped to pieces once again by the last place team, only this time we couldn't muster enough offense of our own to simply win a shootout. SO many issues on this team. I'm not going to focus too much on calling out individual players. I used to go on and on about Morales, and then look what happened to him and I gotta feel like a jerk for wanting him on the bench. LOL

Our backline has been taking a lot of heat in recent weeks, and rightfully so. But to me a big part of our problem is how easily we give up possession everywhere on the field, and how poor of a job our MF does holding possession compared to most of the teams we play. We rarely pressure the ball until it gets into our final third, and if they kept time of possession stats in the NASL, I'd bet we're probably one of the bottom two teams. We rely completely on defending in our final third and then quick counters. Well, when your defense is getting shredded, and you don't finish chances on the counter, you lose 4 - 2 instead of win 5 - 3.

I feel very badly for Matt as he is hung out to dry by the team in front of him continually. I almost feel like it hurts his chances for a shot in MLS because his stats look much worse than they should be if we defended better. I hope that by the time we go on the road to finish the season in ATL and EDM, we've secured our playoff spot and Matt can get some rest before the playoffs.

The other issue seems to be Shore's continuing musical lineups. And it's hard to know just how much to blame him for it since we continue to get zero info about the team released to the fans. I had no clue why Paulo Jr. wasn't in the lineup or even on the bench Saturday. Unless you went to the roster page and noticed he was gone, you'd never know anything. But we haven't had consistency anywhere but in goal all year. I know it comes with the territory to some degree, but at this point I think he ought to set a stretch run lineup and sink or swim with it. Especially in the back. I still think a backline of Gordon, Stahl, Stewart, and Laing is our best chance for at least mediocrity back there. Letting them play together a few games and see how it goes surely can't be any worse than what we've seen over the last few games......

    Huge props indeed.
Also, was that a big #10 Strikers jersey on the walkway behind the goal?

    The team misses Arguez, badly.
A refresher on what he did so well:

We don't have anyone on our team that can win the ball, keep possession, and move it around as well as he does. I'm convinced we wouldn't have conceded 34 goals already this season (we conceded 35 total in 2011) if we had Arguez. I'm very upset we didn't get him when Montreal loaned him to Edmonton.

The Paulo Jr. thing was mentioned at the bottom of the preview before the game, but I agree it wasn't visible enough. There needs to be a separate article about things like this, displayed large on the homepage "Paulo Jr. Returns to Real Salt Lake".

Indeed it was. Restrepo had some family & friends at the match and they brought that. They were super cool and actually gave it to us after the match to bring to the home games.
