So the stat (that MLS averages more viewers on ESPN/ESPN2 than the EPL) is even more misleading than I first thought. On an apples to apples basis: On ESPN2, EPL averages approx. 320k viewers, compared to 272k for MLS in 2012 to date. On ESPN, the EPL (for 1 match) had over a 1mm viewers, compared to an average of 465k for MLS.
It should trend higher as we get to the Quarterfinals (US is expected to beat New Zealand on Friday day morning)...If the US makes it to the Final, then I wouldn't be surprised to see the ratings approach the 8-10 million viewers...
At this time, it is scheduled to air live on NBCSPN....I assume NBC might show a condensed version during prime-time if the US makes it to the final and wins it.... Regardless, NBCSPN will get it's highest rating ever (eclipsing Stanley Cup Final of about 3+million plus viewers)....With the US in the final, you might see something like 7-10 million viewers... The Tuesday matches on NBCSPN averaged about 1.4 million starting from 12:00 PM (EST)...Once again, i assume the US match probably had about 2 million viewers... The Women's Quarterfinal match on Friday morning might get something like 3-4 million viewers on cable.
MLS ALL STAR Final update: 530k on ESPN2 358k on Telefutura Total combined viewership: 888K viewers (no numbers from digital platforms)...
We could see a great weekend for MLS on TV... We should see solid ratings across both channels @NBCSPN and @ESPN2. We have a game tonight on NBCSPN, and 2 games scheduled for Sunday evening on NBCSPN, and ESPN2. All games are tracking to see above average ratings on their respective channels. ESPN2 Sunday night affair between LA Galaxy vs. Seattle should be the highest rated telecast to date on ESPN2 this season. The 400k-475K threshold is in-play.
Women's Olympic Soccer Friday update on NBCSPN 6:00 am-12:00 PM window averaged about 600K viewers... 12:00-5:00 pm Window averaged about 900K viewers...
Men's Saturday Olympics on MSNBC... Averaged about 1.1 million during 6-12:00 PM Slot, and about 1.2 million during the 12:00-6:00 pm slot...Telemundo averaged about 1.3 million viewers for the Mexico vs. Senegal game which aired early morning on Saturday...
Monday Women Olympic Soccer... The Olympic Soccer matches averaged about 2.1 million viewers on NBCSPN on Monday afternoon starting @12:00 PM Est... I assumed the US Women's game probably averaged about 4 million viewers...It probably peaked to around 5-6 million during the final moments of the game... In Canada, the US vs Canada was watched by 3.8 million viewers on TSN
Once we get the official numbers, the Semis featuring the US Women's game was probably the highest watched program on NBCSPN eclipsing the Stanley Cup Final... The Final should bring about 6-7 million viewers for NBCSPN featuring US vs. Japan. The peak viewership could be over 7+million viewers...Pretty incredible for a weekday afternoon match-up...
Official release... 2.9 million average for the whole match...peaking to 3.9 million during 5-5:30 pm...the highest rated Olympic event during that time on NBCSPN...
A new high for MLS on NBCSPN... MLS Scored 405k viewers this past Sunday for a game featuring Portland vs. Dallas...This was a new high for MLS on NBCSPN...This is for the 2.5 hour window...
What was the lead in audience from the Olympics before it? I'm stoked that our leagues TV presence is continuing to grow. When is the first network NBC game?

Sept 15th (Saturday)....The first MLS game on broadcast channel (NBC) after many years... NBC has already schedule 2 US Women's soccer games in September (1st and the 16th)... 3 Soccer games scheduled on broadcast network in September...
Olympic Soccer Final (Women's).. The US Women's Soccer game became the highest rated sporting event on NBCSPN...Plus, the most streamed Olympic sporting event to date... 4.3 million on NBCSPN 1.5 million Online Stream Total....5.8 million watching Women's Soccer on a Weekday afternoon....This sets-up a great momentum leading to the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada...We should see some great numbers with time-zone friendly telecasts...
World Football Challenge... AC Milan vs. Real Madrid was watched by 254K viewers on ESPN2... The Olympic effect is definitely hurting these World Football Challenge games, but I also think the novelty associated with these friendlies are waning...On the field, the games are a hit at the box office...But, not much in terms of ratings...But, the Olympics are definitely impacting the ratings for this tournament...
Not to mention that AC Milan was completely overmatched. There was no reason to watch after the 60th minute mark. Which makes the $84 million bid ($28 million/season) for U.S. rights to Serie A by beIN SPORT LLC to be even more puzzling, as there was no economic or "political" reason to justify the bid (unlike the bid for U.S. rights to La Liga, which was in the neighborhood of $135 million and could have been justified "politically".)
I think these next 3 years with the Confederations Cup, World Cup, and Womens World Cup all having games at prime time for the East Coast we will see how big soccer is in this country. It very much is the sport of the future in the US.
