Let. me first say, Saborio is playing up to his billing, his second goal was class, I have only been to a few matches this year and I have to admit their is more to his game than we see from home. As long as he can continue his recent form and put balls in the back of the net I will cease to be his biggest critic. Sabo does need to go out and buy Espindola a super nice dinner for all the work he does to make it possible for Sabo to look good.
Also another observation on Sabo and his teams play is that when RSL can get the ball wide things open up in the middle. RSL needs to improve on its wide play to counter what teams have done to shut us down recently. Our diamond four needs to become more of a traditional 4-4-2 with Beckerman and Morales in the middle and Gil/Johnson playing wide. We have to give Javi some more space in the middle by spreading the pitch.
Feels good to get 3 points last night but I am afraid we have given up too many home points in the past few weeks to make up with so many away matches to end the season. Vancouver was very unlucky not to get a point last night.

Does anyone have any insight on those last 4 to 5 offsides calls? I was in the south goal so it is really hard to call offsides from that angle but it seems like I was seeing a white jersey in front of red on a few of those calls but i'm not sure.

We sit on the east side south of the midfield in section 3 and most looked like good calls. They even mentioned in the call in show that they were correct calls, close but correct.

+1 for help on offsides calls. Since nobody is screaming bloody murder, I'm guessing that they were legit. Very frustrating stretch.
    EDIT: Thanks Goob

I just have to say that this was a very unconvincing win, and it's indicative of how the team has played for a while, including those 4 losses in a row (minus C-bus game). RSL seems to control the match, but we are always a careless giveaway and lackluster defense (not just the 4 in back) away from getting scored on. For some reason, our possession doesn't seem to lead often to threatening/exciting shots on goal. Often, there's one touch too many, a slight hesitation, or a poor pass/touch that turns a threatening/exciting situation into nothing much.

Why is it that our opponents seem to attack much more convincingly? Vancouver was scaring me about 75% of the time they attacked, while RSL seemed to lazily build to a final effort that seems rushed?

from my perspective on tv, with replays, it seems like the really only questionable one was the first offsides by javi, he appeared to be completely onside. i believe there were 2 or 3 more after that one all within 5 or so minutes, the rest seemed like they were called right.

Speed would give Sabo more space to do his thing. If you'll notice its when we're either able to send in quality crosses or when we have people running off of Sabo that the offense really starts to click. Whether its a guy like Mansally speeding down the side or someone in the midfield, having that constant threat would give Sabo and Espindola more space to work with. Take note the next time we're not that effective offensively and I'm willing to bet you'll see Sabo with 2 defenders on him and nobody outside providing space.

One thing that has helped is that Morales appears to have his confidence back. Over the last month he's been pushing a lot more into the attack and getting into those situations where he's taking 2 defenders on before passing it off to someone. It's helped open up space tremendously.

Funny, we were sitting in the south west corner and each off-side call was treated like "shit that was a terrible call" I didn't see the replays but would not be surprised if the side official got those right.

I sit on the SE end and I honestly thought one was off and the rest were on. If they were off it was really close. Either way we won so it's hard to complain too much. :D

Yeah, we won, but was I the only one that was still very nervous every time Vancouver attacked? I just don't have the same confidence in the defense that I used to. Part of that, of course, is the injuries and the constant revolving door of positions and players, but, even so, I recall several early games in the season when set pieces were a nightmare. The errant back-passes when the other team pressures is also in the back of my mind a lot.

I think that it may be affecting Rimando a little, as well. How else do you explain the happy-feet goal we gave away. In years past, I believe Rimando would have stayed on his line rather than rushing forward and getting so out of position.

I guess I'm a glass is half empty guy today.

I'm sure its part injury part Borchers/Olave being another year older. The only time I really felt like we were going to give up a goal was during those few minutes when Rimando got that huge save then they hit the post. Other than that I felt we were doing good enough to hold them back.

    Better late than never.
    The 15 way-to-long-bullet-list-thoughts-on-the-match

    THE BAD:
    • Vancouver is good. When Kreis billed them as the best team we could play at the RioT, I thought it was just a backhand towards SJ. In reality, it was both that and the truth. Vancouver has loads of talent on the pitch. (wasn't sure where to put this, sorry)
    • Watson is one of the most perplexing players. You watch him in his first game and question "how has this guy not stuck anywhere for the last 3 years". After watching a few more games, it has become obvious why. 1. no speed at all. I mean, Nat Borchers would smoke this guy in a leg race. he's THAT slow. 2. He is over 6 feet tall but consistently loses headers to players sub 5'6". 3. his "left foot" needs to make a date with arturo alvarez' "right foot". They don't do much while out there, so why bother.
    • Beltran is god awful going forward. Seriously, someone teach this kid how to shoot a ball or something. I don't mind being sub-par, but he is god awful in the offensive third most of the time.
    • Our midfield gets far too content with counting on others to track back. KB, in particular, gets sucked up way too high at times and kills us on counters. Apparently he has been watching Alonso at Seattle and reading how he is better and thus decided to copy some of his attributes this season.
    • Putting Javi at forward is moronic. Please Kreis, let this idea die already. We lose our outlet ability if we're counting on Javi to be the guy to release pressure to.
    • When up a man, go for the ********ing win, please - especially at home. Tying into that last bullet, make an adjustment that is offensive at home when up a man. Kill the game. Show why this place is/was so damn hard to play at.
    • Mansally has officially been indoctrinated into the RSL outside back mentality. The guy just doesn't want to go forward like he did in that first game. I know he has had more defensive responsibilities in the games since then, but when it's open he just doesn't go forward anymore. It's sad, really, as we could use him flooding the wing to open things for others.
    THE GOOD:
    • Javi is quietly getting back to form. He isn't amazing like he was pre-injury, but his play has consistently gotten better and better as his fitness has as well. It's fun to watch.
    • Espy's passion is really great, but its such a double edged sword at times. I think overall it's a good thing, but sometimes you want to grab the guy and say "chill the ******** out and just play soccer".
    • When I saw wingert coming in to go against Richards I thought for certain we were going to get burned for a goal. This sub actually panned out rather well as Wingert isn't fast, but does have tremendous spacing at outside back. Center back? No. but as an outside back he can still play.
    • Jonny Steele didn't play.
    THE GREAT:
    • Sabo's game overall. Tremendous work rate, all over the pitch, and his finishing was uncanny. I don't get how a guy can make that many pk's that many times in a row. On paper, it's such an easy thing, but anyone who has taken one knows how challenging it is. Sabo just knocks them in like nothing while wearing an RSL kit. I love it (knock on major wood for this comment)
    • Javi's cross for the game winner was something we've really been missing this season. Know where we had that kind of service before? Robbie Russel. That was a Robbie Russell, first time, right footed bending, cross to a T.
    • Yordany Alvarez and KB were on the pitch at the same time and the world didn't stop spinning. In fact, we actually became much more composed defensively and in the middle. Please, Kreis, use them at the same time more. It's actually really fun to watch.
Overall, I think we didn't deserve to win but put ourselves in a position to do it, and that's worth a lot more than anything lately.

and, just to play devil's advocate, had Cannon not received his red card, we would have been up 2 goals and I think the ending goes differently. That move by Cannon, while not panning out in the end, was actually a huge moment for their hope in the game. They were down a man, but still just down a goal. They'd show all they needed was a moment with Mattocks (what a player) and they could burn us.

I've said in the past that sometimes a red can prove to be a big way for your team to get points - this was nearly an example of how.
