that chant is the gayest thing i ever heard at a game in the history of my life, i cringe in embarrassment every time i hear that. it makes the people in the supporters section look like they have been watching high school soccer and went straight to RBA after their senior year ended
Gayest? Forgive me while I proceed to discount anything you have to say about what's appropriate or cool kid.
Besides trying to censor chants, I don't like what people were saying about Redbull taking down certain banners that showed fans distaste with Backe, and so on.
My new favorite chant comes when Conner disposesses someone of the ball...... "YOU GOT LADE' Good stuff.. Especially for a childish mind like mine.
SGs are a pain in the ass. this is nothing new. i have said it a hundred times, and been crucified for it. a group of a few hundred among 19k attending a game are setting the the agenda for what it means to be a fan and how the teams and league should position their marketing efforts. it is a total joke. Garber's comments reflect the league's understanding of that. Big difference in being accessible to families and marketing to "soccer moms". But most members of SG don't understand that.....
So the Red Bulls (or maybe the League) just sent around a survey. It's about fan behavior. One of the choices for "what is my least favorite thing about the Red Bulls experience" is "the behavior of my fellow fans". Many of the questions asking about the survey taker's connection to the game involve the kind of obsessive behavior and thought processes only the biggest fans would know. So yeah, South Ward types might want to fill this out.
I'm not part of any supporters group, don't sit in their section, and still love YSA and yell it loud and clear. And has been said...the kids love it.
It is not surprising that a childish chant appeals to children. Why it appeals to some of their parents is more difficult to understand.
Their parent's parents used to take them to pro sporting events back in the day when profanity was the norm. Probably brings them back to their childhood a bit. Does for me anyway. When I can get away with yelling YSA at the Arena it reminds me of what a baseball/football game with my Father used to be like. It used to be fun. Now it sucks. Not just because of security guards throwing people out for swearing, but everying else too. And I'm not trying to be cute with this term "pu$$ification of America". I think it's a real problem that children are too sheltered from the real world these days. It makes it harder for them to adjust when they enter the real world/workforce/whatever you want to call it. Yes, there are places where profanity shouldn't be used (churches, classrooms, most workplaces), but a pro sporting event? Well I just don't buy into that at all.
Well, see, that's mildly amusing, and something that only works for our team. In other words, the exact opposite of YSA.
It's not just TV. I go often with my 9 year old son and I sit behind the goal and I don't like that chant. It is not creative. I like what the supporters section works on, but they should do a better job of sharing the chants they work on so the many other regular fans can join on something more creative.
and i've taken my little brother to games since he was 8; i will take my son in a few years (at 5 or 6 maybe). section 101 for every game. the conversation goes like this: "you can sing the songs, but don't use any of the bad words. those are for adults." "ok." conversation over. as for sharing chants with the rest of the stadium... there were chant cards going around at least for the last 2 years. i think they still do. stadium employees try to give them to me all the time.
Only MILDLY???? Come on man, come on! Picture it.... Opponent ruushing towards our goal.. Connor, seemingly out of nowhere, takes the ball from him as the crowd chants YOU GOT LADE. Just picture it. Oh forget it...
Deadly serious. The SGs should get some anonymous volunteers to conduct an exit poll of 1000 fans after a game. I am quite sure that the majority will not have many positive comments. They are a fingernails-on-chalkboard level nuisance.
Amr has had some weird axe to grind with supporters groups since he's been posting. I won't speak for everyone but the supporters group make the atmosphere 1000x better. Without them we'd just be left with intern run "let's go red bulls" once a half. Horrible.
I've taken probably close to 50 different people to Red Bull games and none of them had anything negative to say. Quite the opposite.
Supporter groups are great.. They really bring life to the event. Still, If YSA is not good for TV or for the kids (I have had a couple people mention the language to me over the years), just do it less. Bust it out everyonce in a while instead of EVERYTIME. Problem solved...
