I wouldn't mind stopping YSA. I'm not against cursing either, just think we could do better. While we're on the subject, let's stop "We Love Ya" as well. It gets tiring when every. single. other. team. sings it as well.
Agreed - we can do better. I wish we would But it doesn't make Garber right. Just makes him an overbearing and heavy-handed asshole. And stuff like this just makes it that much more difficult to get rid of it.
I am neutral on this chant. I'll sing it, but I really wouldn't mind stopping it for the good of mls.
YSA is the chant equivalent of comfort food. It's not great or creative, and anyone will admit that. But it's one of the few chants that is a) relatively original to the United States, and b) easily spread throughout the stadium. I don't mind it, and I don't understand why so many American supporters are willing to let the FCC, or Don Garber or whomever, stop one of the few universal American supporter traditions. But of course, I'm not the one being threatened with lifetime bans or whatever.
God forbid little Johnny hears someone say asshole at a sporting event. Poor kids will be traumatized. What a joke.
From the 2 part interview that Don Garber had with the Sporting News: Garber was at the Arean during last wednesday's afternoon "Heat Bowl" game and was angered at loud YSA chants during a heavily marketed family day in front of live tv broadcast. Full Interview: Part 1: http://aol.sportingnews.com/soccer/...r-mls-commissioner-sporting-news-conversation Part 2: http://aol.sportingnews.com/soccer/story/2012-07-21/sporting-news-conversation-don-garber-part-ii
Didn't Garber say he was trying to do away with the family day marketing? I thought he had learned his lesson 10+ years ago when he saw how miserable catering to the soccer moms was.
The family day thing this time around was not a league initiative--it was an internal Red Bull idea proposed and executed by Chris Heck. However that doesn't take away from the validity of what Garber is saying and the stupidity of what happened last wednesday. I'm not going to get into the whole debate of "censorship" of supporter's section---but I am a partisan of common sense. And unfortunately there was little of it shown during that game. Heck didnt use his common sense by scheduling a game in the middle of the day on one of the hottest summers on record. Likewise, the supporters didn't use their common sense by loudly yelling YSA in a stadium full of kids in front of live tv cameras. When Garber says that the league's tv partners have complained to him about the league doing something to rein in profanity during live broadcasts I am inclined to believe him. It no longer becomes just a free speech issue--it is a "hurting the league business" issue and the FCC starts getting involved and harassing the league and its tv partners.
to the tune of the Village People's "YMCA" When opposing GK has goalkick "It's fun to say Y-S-A!!" just the letters mind you......
*snicker* And with respect to "We Love Ya", we are pretty much the only team in the league that does it the very first 5 mins of the game and then shelves it for the next 85. So it stays.
And the pu$$yification of America continues...sigh. There are a million things wrong with the world and with MLS. This shouldn't even make the list. Newsflash: Grown men like to drink beer, watch sports, and curse. It's been this way since the dawn of time. If my saying "YSA" at a pro sporting event is destroying a child's development that's not on me. That's on the parents. My Dad used to take me to games and made it very clear that the language there is reserved for adults only and if he ever heard it come out of my mouth I would pay for it. Done deal.
You're only looking at it from the social aspect---but you're failing to see the bottom line that the league is concerned with. Their TV partners have started to complain on multiple occasions to Garber that the profanity in some stadiums in MLS is getting to be too much/too loud.Unfortunately RBA seems to be one of those stadiums.TV stations are trying to mike stadiums differently and still the chants in some stadiums pose problems. If the league's business partners have problems with YSA then instantly it becomes a league problem as well. Money always wins out. I think it probably wont be too long before the league does something to address this situation (most likely in a clumsy and heavy handed manner) if the supporters can't solve it or police it on their own. I think there's a place in every stadium for supporter culture, but at the same time no one likes it when a line is crossed from fun and creative to boorish or immature behavior taken too far. Absolutely no need to be yelling YSA at the top of your lungs....
I still think it's funny/fun. Not very creative? Yes. But still funny. It's a very quick fix for the broadcasters. Simply adjust the levels when there's a goal kick. It's not that hard. They place special mikes near the supporters section to make the broadcasts sound like there are more fans in the stadium. All you have to do is turn that level down for 5 seconds.
Truth. And if the kids LIKE IT guess what those kids will be doing when the grow up? Buying tickets to the games!
Tell Mr. Garber that my 11-yo son loves the chant and giggles every time he hears it. In fact, when I'm coaching his U-12 team, if he is subbed off the field, he will whisper to me on the bench "you suck bleep-hole!" and start giggling when the opposing 'keeper takes a goal kick. So, as far as YSA goes, its intended audience loves it.
