Since this was effectively a salary dumping move; I know Wiedenman is there, but who cares? Isn't this effectively MLSE saving money for themselves? I hate this DeGuzman move. Basically, it just saves money for MLSE. There's no real tangible benefit to us as a team, at least not moreso than JDG on the field for the rest of the season.

I say this as a JDG fan. I honestly think he was a legitimate $200K per year player in this league. I'm not sure who agrees here.

Also, am I to understand that the Soolsma move was basically a philosophicla difference on direction of the club? Really, we do not have a plethora of good players. This attitude that good players are expendable needs to stop.

Actually, no, it's the opposite. This move is costing MLSE money. If the rumours are true, they are likely going to be paying some of JDG's salary for the rest of the season. So, they're not really saving much in the way of salary.

The move is to clear up cap room (which the league pays for, by the way) and to free up a DP space. Likely MLSE will use the cap room and DP space to sign another player. So all in all this will cost MLSE more money than had they kept JDG to the end of the year.

The benefit to the team is they get rid of a player that they weren't likely going to keep after this year anyway (and I doubt JDG would re-sign for $200k next year), plus this gives them the freedom to sign somebody that can help build the team for next year.

de Guzman wasn't gonna sign for us, or anyone else, for $200k. That would be insulting even to offer that.

Mariner was asked if the Houston arrest had anything to do with it, and he indicated it had some impact on his decision. It has also been suggested that the change in system left a winger like Soolsma expendible. (I hope that wasn't the reason).

I remember one Soolsma goal in particular, may remember it, a cross and volley, assist by Johnson, and everybody went over to congratulate Johnson instead of Soolsma. It was odd. I remember I couldn't believe my eyes. Soolsma eventually went over to Johnson as well ... can't say I ever saw a goal scorer ignored like that before. It was so out of the ordinary it must have meant something ..

According to De Vos's interview with Mariner (tweeted), Dallas is taking the full salary cap hit.

    Jason deVos@jasondevos
Mariner - "Dallas are taking the cap hit." < That is VERY surprising.

Depends if anyone else is willing to offer him more than that.

For some reason, I envision him with a ticket to Norway or Denmark in his hand...

TFC better get a legitimate CB (or two) now. No more excuses. That is the top priority. And I'm not talking about another Iro or Aceval. TFC already squandered DeRo's value by not getting a decent CB (which irritates me to no end). It's going to become really hard to keep being a supporter much longer if they can't identify their own needs (I guess that's what FIFA games are good for).

Wiedeman was 2nd rd. pick in 2010 (member of Generation Adidas as well - make what you will of that) but really hasn't done much since then. I wouldn't be surprised the least bit if he gets waived at the end of the season - TFC has a habit of doing that thanks to the revolving door policy.

you do realize that Wiedeman was a throw-in don't you? TFC didn't trade JDG because they actually wanted Wiedeman.

true, he won't get more than 200k in a new MLS contract. it's possible if TFC had offered that to him though, he'd take it since his family is here. i expect he'll finish his career in Europe for a couple years at around 400k per or simply retire following this season.

i wish him well, he played some excellent games for TFC but never came close to his billing. a great professional and loyal servant of CMNT.

Weideman's signing is good too though, it gives us a little bit more depth at forward, and his GA status it means no impact on the cap. With Hoops picking up the salary for JDG, this is an excellent business decision. Now all we need is to sign a new DP who'll have a positive impact, and at least one other servicable MLS player.

So long as one of those signings shores up our backline, particularly at CB, this will all have been worth it IMHO.

To be truthful, I thought TFC was going to receive some allocation money in the deal, because I didn't think that they would get any players back.

Nothing wrong with getting Widemman in the mix. We can use a squad player, especially up front, allowing us to rest Koevs or Johnson once in a while.

The way Mariner went on and on about Wiederman makes it seem like Mariner wanted him. In one article Mariner even went as far as saying Wiederman was "one of the best strikers of the modern era" (I'll find the link if you really want to see it).

I know the trade was more of a salary dump. I'm just hoping TFC gets their sh!t right and get a quality CB or two now.

Evidently FCD doesn't have a whole lot of cap room themselves, so if they had allocation money to trade they probably would have used it themselves

Although a forward, apparently Dallas was playing him at RB .. from the ridiculous hyperbole of Mariner one can only assume he plans otherwise. Maybe as replacement for Soolsma. Ya, Mariner, he used the phrase 'best finishers of the modern era' ... what got left out was, 'out of San Ramon.' ;)

I know this is horse shi*t and for jokes but MLSE has the dough and we got another DP slot, might as well sell the farm, lay down the guantlet and have a powerhouse of kaka in attacking mid and Frings down the middle. Old article but all the articles make it sound like he thinks coming over here is his life dream. Be a beauty mentor and leave a statement for the rest of the league that we arn't f@*kin' around lol... De Guzman money + a little or what.

    We got Hassli.

Toronto FC announced Friday that the club has acquired forward Eric Hassli from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in exchange for Toronto’s first round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft along with an international roster spot through the 2013 season. Hassli will be considered a Designated Player and occupy an International Roster spot.

I think he is a very too replacement for Danny, offers the same qualities that we lost in Danny though Eric I would say is a bit more mobile off the ball than Danny. Caps really are clearing out the front line getting rid of Le Toux and Hassli to bring in Miller and someone else more than likely.

Also to note that he is in the last year of his deal with a option for next year if we want to pick it up (according to De Vos on twitter) so also means we are not stuck with him if things don't work out but I think he will be a asset to the club

    Holy S--T!

I get the feeling that Whitecaps supporters are not happy about this deal right now.

BTW, Hassli will wear (drum roll, please) number 29 with TFC, if ya need it.

Very good move. Surprised that Vancouver would send him to Toronto.

Well, it's been done, so I hope this is a long-term move. If this is only a temporary replacement, then we just gave away a very early first round draft pick for a striker that's only going to play during a season that's been lost already. All roster moves need to be done with an eye on the future, so Hassli has to be a mainstay.
And that means getting rid of Koev. And that's going to be hard, but we were already prepared for him to leave anyway. And if Hassli's here, it's best if Danny makes way. Hopefully, though this may be pretty optimistic, he can stay with the club as part of the coaching staff. That'd be awesome since I think he's be a great coach. Maybe work at the academy with Rongen and everyone?
I don't think Hassli is an upgrade over Koevermans though. Hassli isn't a natural goalscorer/poacher like Koev is and I don't think he'll score as much goals as Koev. But he's good for one or two goal of the year candidates a season and he's a bit more mobile. We'll need to get more scoring from our other players though (I'm looking at you, Johnson)
We still might need to upgrade the strikers during the off-season. Even with the best finisher in the modern era (not to mention AMARIKWAAAAF*UCKYEAH!!!!) we still look pretty bleak.
