a real f*#king waste if you ask me. yes, FeMexFut and USSF will make a bit more money blah blah blah. the USMNT is overwhelmed by meaningless money making friendlies so why cheapen the intensity and atmosphere of a match at Azteca with another one?
I think it's good expierence for some of our players. Why Mexico wants to do it I'm not sure, other than just money making. I certainly won't contribute to that for a friendly but I thought I'd give some people who might a heads up.
Playing in Azteca in the height of heat & smog season? I love it. Seriously. Klinsi has said he wants the team to take on the toughest opponents and what better way that to go into the Lion's den that is Azteca? And nothing, I mean nothing, can prepare us for the inevitable away leg down there in the Hexagonal.
How dangerous would this game be for an American fan? What are some of your experiences at Mexico-US matches? I'm just getting into US soccer and I love hearing stories of fans visiting other countries for US matches. I'd expect Mexico to be one of the scarier places to watch a match
Intense and definitely something worth experiencing, though I'm sure a friendly won't be quite as good as a qualifier where points are on the line and more fans are likely to turn out.
not dangerous but it is a hostile atmosphere. dont bother with this match, wait a year and go to the qualifier.
I'm very interested in going. Anyone have a guess on the total price? I'm going to say, 700$ per? Maybe?
I was thinking 3 days, 13-15, but the more I investigate it, the price seems hefty for just a friendly.
From what I hear, there's always a group of fans who get a bus in via police escort. I've heard stories of police barricades making a path from the bus into the stands. Ideally, they don't want any fans cross-congregating. It's a separate section in the stadium, and from what I hear, we might be talking "police in riot gear" protecting US fans. I hear that if people take the train or subway in, that's not too bad, but just be aware. Keep your eyes and ears open, and don't try anything stupid. Obviously, there's the usual jeering and taunting going on the entire day. I hear the police are cool though. They'll generally laugh and smile, and not give too much crap just because you're in US colors. I believe they allow standing and cheering, flags, etc. It's not like some MLS stadiums where they give crap just because you choose to stand in a standing section. Oh, and that yellow stuff raining on you? It isn't Mt. Dew or lemonade.
My brother lives in Mexico City, so I have cashed in some Delta frequent flier miles and I am going - Tuesday to Sunday. Yes, it is not a WCQ, but this is probably my one realistic chance to see the USA at Azteca. I went to the USA vs Mexico in Phoenix (5 years ago?) Anyone have a clue when US Soccer will release ticket details?
Holy shit for $6500 I could find a way to attend just about every US soccer game through the 2018 world cup.
I just got an email from the USSSC. I'm not posting the password for the tickets but if you are interested and not a member of the USSSC you can join or I can figure a way to help you order. But I gather there'll be plenty of tickets available after pre-sale is over and any USA fan can buy a ticket easily. I've got my ticket! I can't wait for the WC Qualifier in 2013. Never been to Mexico City and want to also check the sites and not miss a chance at the 1st USA win at Azteca! There is at least me going. The presale probably had 400 tix and only 37 were bought if that assumption is correct, so a real small patch of us in our southwestern corner upperdeck seats like I gather USA fans sat at in 2009. Plus players' friends, family, staff and others buying tix on their own elsewhere. Kinda like the Alamo but much worse! I can't wait!
