well technically if you combine north american and south america, two seperate continents into one then yeah the entire region is called america... still don't get why its a big deal that our country is called the united states of america
I have no problem with the name. I only have a problem with the fact that we don't have a proper adjective for our nationality and therefore we use the name "Americans", making the people and regions who are part of the continent(s) be referred to as African-, Anglo-, Latin-/Hispanic, Ibero-, North-, South-, Central-, and *insert ethnic descent here*-Americans. Even Frank L. Wright wanted us to have a demonym specialized for those born in the country, and he was what we would consider as a true American or something.
There's really no confusion as to what people you're talking about when you say "American." It's not like anyone else in the Americas uses that demonym. So I'm not sure what the problem is.
There were rumors a while ago to bring the Champions League final here but that obviously didn't happne. The only way I could see this happening is if the US was invited which UEFA will not do. This will never happen
Maybe you're right. But it's still undeserving. I'm only suggesting for two factors: -Football would overthrow "football". -Nobody in Europe would complain that the tournament was rigged to favor the host when the US is the host and they're not competing in a championship exclusive for European nations and other nations considered European despite originally being from Asia.
I wasn't aware that this was such a huge issue. Was the 2008 tournament rigged to favor Austria and Switzerland? Cuz neither made it out of the group stage. In fact Switzerland had some players controversially suspended because of a fight at the end of a qualifying match against Turkey which was totally instigated by Turkey IIRC. And anyone who thought that Greece-Poland match was rigged after the debatable 2 yellows on a Greek player was quickly set straight when Szczęsny got sent off for Poland soon after.
Oh, I see. Okay. Well, for the first point, no, it wouldn't, except for that one month, and only because there wouldn't be any NFL games beingp layed. And as for the second point, host nations have won three of the 13 competitions to this point, and only one of the last 10. So, thanks all the same.
YOU IGNORANT FOOL! [/sarcasm] I understand that North and South America, "the Americas," makes its inhabitants "Americans," but as the United States does not have a demonym without "American," we get it. "United States of Mexico" gets the demonym "Mexican," so the United States of America gets the demonym "American." It's not a difficult concept, and it should NOT be controversial. It's just the attempt to create controversy where there is none. Being a Linguistics major at a hippie university, I had to deal with the term "United Statian" floating around and I won't have any of it. Where I come from, you call someone that, you're likely to get a beatin'!
Hosting the English Premier league for a season would be more impactful. More games. Indianapolis calls dibs on all Liverpool home games. Bring Anfield over brick by brick!
The Euro should stay in Europe. End of story. How about propping up our side of the world instead? Don't agree with everything, but there are a lot of good suggestions here: http://www.soccernewsday.com/usa/a/106/merging-the-american-soccer-confederations-pt-2-solutions
You're a funny United Statian. Mexico's name is not US of Mexico. It is United Mexican States. Big difference.
Yeah, both are a set of United States ..... HUGE difference. Although, in Spanish, you say Estados Unidos Mexicanos .... which is greatly different than simply Estados Unidos de America in reference to the USA. Also, the country is broken into states (31 I believe) and a federal district ... which sounds totally different than that other place .... Just saying. Oh, and don't get me started on your avatar
WTF this thread went from guatemala to guatepeor. There is a thread on the Concacaf Forum for this. https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...co-vs-u-s-of-a-rivalry-thread.1764416/page-13 BTW depends on where you went to school if American is 1 or 2 continents. Same with Asia and Europe, I believe the Russians call it Euro-Asia a single continent.
States United City? There is no Aztec language, so with all the due respect, I am calling bull shit on this one unless you can prove me wrong then I will apologize. Mexica were a Nauthl people, that is where the name comes from.
Well it is Wikipedia if you notice the first paragraph has no sources. Now by this article "CO" is what means place, like say Tax-co, Texco-co. "the war deity and patron of the Mexica Huitzilopochtli possessed Mexitl or Mexi as a secret name. Mexico would then mean "Place of Mexi" or "Land of the War God."" so Mexi would mean the god and co would mean the place. Here are some more hypothesis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_Mexico#Etymology
Who gives a f*ck? Everyone in the world knows what I mean if I say that I'm an American. No one is gonna ask me "What kind of American, Peruvian or Canadian?" Every other country in the Americas has decided on a demonym and none of them call themselves "American" except the United States. Whether you think it's incorrect or unfair doesn't matter. It has become the globally accepted, de facto term for a person from the United States of America. As for It's called FOOTBALL's avatar... again, whatever one thinks of fairness is irrelevant. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo says Mexico surrendered half it's land.
