Anyhoo, I figured this tie breaker rule thing out.
For Portugal to advance to QFs:
1.) A win will get them in no matter what.
    2.) A draw coupled with a Denmark draw/loss.
3.) A loss by 1 goal coupled with a Denmark loss.

THESE are the only three scenarios that can get them in.
Criteria is the record of the two teams in question win/loss.
Then it comes down to goal difference.

If anyone disagrees, please let me know.

They need to please all the messi knob gobblers. If messi wasn't around, it wouldnt be this bad. FIgo took a lot of heat for wc2002.

Yes, if Portugal wins the only way they dont move on is if Germany loses 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, etc. It doesn't matter if Portugal wins by 10 goals, a 2-3 or 3-4 Germany loss still puts Portugal out.

the only one i dispute is 1) a win doesn't automatically qualify them if denmark wins. GD comes into play with POR, DEN, and GER after that.

First goal difference among the 3 teams, then most goals scored among the three teams, then total GD out of all matches, then most goals scored out of all matches. I think...

Here are 2 things you need to figure this out.

On the next match day (17 June):
    • Germanywill advance to the quarter-finals if
      • they do not lose to Denmark by 0–1 or 1–2 or by 2 goals or more OR
      • Portugal do not defeat the Netherlands
    • Portugalwill advance to the quarter-finals if
      • they defeat the Netherlands and Denmark defeat Germany by 1–0 or 2–1 or at least 2 goals OR
      • they do not lose to the Netherlands and Germany do not lose to Denmark OR
      • they lose to the Netherlands by 1 goal and Germany defeat Denmark.
    • Denmarkwill advance to the quarter-finals if
      • they defeat Germany OR
      • they draw with Germany and the Netherlands defeat Portugal.
    • The Netherlands will advance to the quarter-finals if they defeat Portugal by at least 2 goals and Germany defeat Denmark.
And here is a link where you can play around with the score and the standings will update:

Does anyone know if it was Bentos decision to have Ronaldo not track back or was it just Ronaldo being lazy?

    Thanks

Bento claims in an interview that he wanted to push for the 3-1 rather than defend the 2-1 lead.
Ronaldo did track back most of the game against Germany and during the 1st half (see 1st goal...). So maybe it was a tactical decision. In that case I would expect Meireles to provide cover to that wing. It didn't happen. Not sure why not but it was maddeningly obvious.

I called Denmark tying the game. Threw my scarf, accidently broke a glass statue, only to see moments later see Varela be a super sub and save the day with the 3rd goal. I did a front flip onto the couch an proceeded with 20 pushups with the adrenaline rushing through my body.

God I can only hope this next game isn't this intense because my heart will probably give out. I stole my grandmas anxiety pills...yeah it was that bad. This team will be the death of me.

Força Portugal, let's kick some orange Dutch asss!!!

P.S. why the hell don't we use Varela as the striker? Or Ronaldo as the striker and Varela as the LW? His energy is a joy to watch, which is rather surprising because he didn't get much playing time at Porto this season.

The best part is remember all the Danish trolls the last couple of years beating their chests over getting the better of us in qualifying?

WC 2010 - Portugal advances from group of death, Denmark sent home in group stage

now Euro 2012, Portugal beats Denmark 3-2, and is better placed to escape from the group of death

must be alot of butthurt Danish Fans.

    U Mad bro?

also, Varela just scored the most trolling goal of the euro 2012 championships. That goal Pissed off millions of people across Europe and the World.

if this is true, whats to stop denmark and Germany from rigging a 3-2 win for denmark thus eliminating Portugal and Netherlands no matter what they do?

    this cant be correct.

I can honestly say Coentrão was a dissapointment today. The Danes attacked that left side the whole 2nd half and Fabio was NEVER there to defend. Haven't seen such a bad game from him.

Meireles and Moutinho were other non factors. No creativity from Moutinho, really missing Danny offensively out there. Veloso was surprisngly the best midfielder out there today.

Ronaldo the Biggest bum out there today. Would have nailed those 2 chances like nothing for Real but nada for the Selecão. It's getting sickening. Let's give him 10 million, see If he scores.

    Ah, ok.
I hope he brings it right over to Coentrao or Nani who actually deserve it...

(i.e. nice header but when a CB lets his man (Bentner) score 2 goals I think the MOTM award should go somewhere else...).

Ummm no, Coentrao was good again today, and he created and assisted the last goal. The only reason why they consistently attacked that side was because someone was not tracking back, whether it be personal or tactical reasons, one of Ronaldo/Raul were not their to supply cover.

Ronaldo was not that bad that I would bench him, he just couldn't finish but he needs to get it together, his last good tournament with us was in 2006, his best was in 2004, it's like he gets worse every tournament.... especially coming off his best season with Real Madrid

Coentrao was good, how can you blame him for getting overwhelmed with no help? I think he handled his side fine, Pepe should have been closer on the second goal. Nani was MotM imo, did you guys see how many chances he created? Unreal, really missed this guy in 2010. Postiga is really bad, unfortunately he will start against the dutch because he scored but he botched sooooooo many chances, like that interception he had, he was on a break away with Ronaldo in support and he just couldn't get the ball out of his feet, it was pathetic.

Varela is the hero, guy deserves to start for sure but for who? Perhaps he can go up top, maybe push Meireles to the bench in a more offensive line up?

To be precise it is not true that Germany and Denmark can rig advancing by fixing a 3-2 Denmark victory. If that is the result and if Portugal wins by 2 goals or more, they would still advance over Germany. However, if Germany and Denmark rig a one goal Denmark victory of 4-3 or higher, then yes, Portugal could beat Holland by 1000 goals and it wouldn't matter. (You can check this in the Kicker link you provided as well)

Why? Because then the relevant tie breaker between Germany and Portugal becomes goals scored in matches between the tied teams (which would be Denmark, Germany, and Portugal with 6 pts). If Germany scores 3 or more in a one goal loss to Denmark, that means they would have scored at least four goals in its matches against Portugal and Denmark, which would be more than the 3 goals Portugal scored against Denmark and Germany combined.

We have seen teams play to gentlemen's ties before in final-game-of-the-round situations. This is not new and resorting to tiebreakers is never ideal. However, given the particular scoreline needed here, it would be pretty scandalous to fix such an obvious, high-scoring result. Plus, that would guarantee Germany the #2 spot in the group instead of the #1, meaning they'll likely have to play Russia instead of the weaker Czechs or Poles.

Just don't comprehend how Portugal can nullify a world class centre forward like Dzeko over 4 games, yet Bendnter scores 6 goals in 5 games against us.......

Honestly, good game, typical sort of defensive lapses. The worst part was watching people ball watching in our own box as Bendtner hit his first. As far as Ronaldo goes. All I want to say is, he wasn't found in those positions in the Germany game, so this for me, was a drastic improvement in terms of play off the ball (which was his weakest point against Germany). He was doing a similar role to what he does in Madrid, which is creating speed to a counter-attack and switching the play. He also got himself into scoring position, and I know, scandalous misses, but at least he was in those positions, and that means he's finding his game as every match goes on. Holland could (I want to say will, but we might have to wait until Quarters before he bursts his best) be his break-out game, especially since Holland knows they need to win to have a snow-flake's chance at advancing, and we all know what happens at those moments, thanks to the Danes.

When I saw Pepe scoring after those two great interventions in the defense, I immediately thought he could be considered the man of the match. Totally fair in my opinion.
