Didn't the FA already have their investigation? He's not a racist. Do you think Drogba would hug him if he were?

You don't have to be a racist to say racist things.

Just because someone has black friends doesn't mean they're not a racist. I'm not saying he's definitely a racist but let's see what the result of this trial is before claiming he isn't just because he gets along with our non-white players. If he's convicted, I think the team should seriously consider stripping him of the captaincy at least.

And not everyone is a professional athlete or captain of the European Champions. These guys are supposed to be role models for children and such. They don't have to be perfect, but you have to hold them to a higher standard than you would your average person.

Because the can kick a soccer ball better than everyone else? Give me a break.

This BS about atheletes being "role models" has various problems.

No, just because they can kick the ball, they don't have to be better than everyone else.

But those that kick the ball and captain their team may need to have a better perspective about being a leader.

I don't particularly care about him as a role model (I haven't encouraged my dad to get into cocaine dealing because Terry's dad does it), but he does represent the club. And if that representation ever becomes a detriment, it will become a more serious issue. If, for instance, black players become more reluctant to come here if he's the captain, that's a serious issue. If he starts being banned for it, that's an issue. If there's a split in the locker room over him - that's an issue. Or if there are other negative effects from his captaincy (or even his presence at the club).
Of course, that being said, it's not apparent any of the above is an issue, which is why for now it's largely moot, the same way that I'm sure most Liverpool players don't really give a shit about Suarez's indiscretion vis a vis Evra. But if it starts to matter, or if his form becomes shaky due to ongoing issues, then we'll have to re-examine it.

Until last year and the Vanessa Perroncel nonsense (which, while a dick thing to do, wasn't a big deal), Terry's off the field behavior has never made much of a difference. That's no longer the case and it will have to be monitored going forward.

Agreed. One might argue his red-card against Barca to be more detrimental to the team, than ANY of the mentioned racist issues.

by no means I am trying to stiffle conversation (well actually I am)

but can we shift on from the JT/race discussion in this thread as it will probably go down a path which will really disrail this discussion

    cheers

We've really seen very little on the Hulk front. Any new news regarding him? Also, was there any validity to the VdW rumors? Or was that speculation in the fact that we need a RB and he happens to play RB?

Hulk is allegedly on hold until after the Olympics

the VDW rumour seem to be exactly that

Given that Hulk may not go to the Olympics at all, I don't buy that rumor. Luiz and Thiago Silva are definitely going to London, the only question is who the third player will be, and it may not be Hulk.

Makes sense on Hulk, however, he'll be a January move if that is the case.

I don't get the VdW rumors though. What the hell is the point, positioning from his agent? We need a RB, unless Hutch is our answer, which unfortunately, isn't our longtime answer IMO.

We are still glaringly short at some positions. We are weak up front. Even if Torres is firing next season, we are short. Studge is a question mark, but deserves a chance. Lukaku is miles away from being a regular contributor, and mentally, just isn't there. We are weak at RB. Our best RB, is a CB. Our second best RB is a former retired 20 something. We still don't have a RW. Ramires? In a pinch, yes.

Does Kakuta make the team next year? De Bruyne could, but might be better served loaned out to a BPL side.

We just have so many questions. It makes my mind hurt.

figured I'll try to get this back on track.

the Hulk rumours are just those atm and tbh I dont think anyone knows what is going on. I mentioned the Olympics because that seems to be the only rumour which seems consistent with the timing of his alleged move.

I would hope by now that someone would realise we are an injury to Ivan away from having Ferreira and Hutch as our RB options

I think Kakuta makes the team as we will have (hopefully) the most amount of games we have played in a long, long while on the schedule this season. The rumours on KDB seem to indicate a loan

we have a pretty significant Summer tour after the Euros followed by the Charity Shield (a somewhat serious friendly), the European Super Cup, and the World Club Championship on top of the League, CL, FA Cup and Carling Cup

We bought Mata pretty late as well. Beyond which, if Hulk stays with Porto until January, he'll be cup-tied, and it's unlikely we'll be out of the CL after the group stages.
