Isn't LSP's capacity less than the RioT?

as for the US not coming back, i certainly dont think it's because the RioT is too small (look at columbus and KC hosting, both relatively small and similar sizes to the RioT). a smaller stadium would probably drive prices higher, sucks for fans that want to go but it does a couple things in limiting capacity to US fans and creating a better atmosphere.

it's clearly not because the fans in the area cant bring the support, everyone praised the fans at the game in 2005.

just unlucky or the other places maybe lining the pockets of certain US organizers. hard to argue against KC, they have an award winning venue (literally). should be a good place for a US soccer game.

Actually I think he's talking about the El Salvador game at Rio Tinto in 2009. It was just short of a sellout and over half the fans were repping El Salvador.

This is what I was talking about.
The reason we got the El Salvador game was because of so many positive experiences players said they had when we hosted Costa Rica.

Most people on the us boards (which are full of morons, I know) and on various commenting sites said they were disapointed with how loud the El Salvador fans were during the game at the RioT.

It was one of the most memorable matches I've ever been to. However, when you aren't hosting in a big city like LA, NY, or Chicago you expect the crowd to be 80-100% on your side. Not 50/50 like it seemed to be in that game.

Made for a cool atmosphere, but I'm sure US soccer didn't give us too high of a grade in that regard.

LSP has proven, to prove my point further, that they'll have a very pro US crowd. Until that changes, they'll likely get qualifiers over us.

Also impacting us for a WCQ I Imagine: slow ticket sales for the US Women's send-off game against Canada prior to the Olympics.

no offense, but the price they are asking for what will amount to a light training session is ridiculous.
This is the last friendly before the actual tournament. You know that that means in terms of the team giving a shit? In terms of player selection if anyone even mentions they are a little sore?

Its a joke that they expect me to pay out over 20 bucks for the cheapest seat to watch that.

And all of these things are related in the minds of the USSF. I am not arguing it's a good deal; I am pointing out influences on the decision making process of who will host the qualifiers. Perhaps they also believe we're only a good market for one such game a year, maximum, and an announcement that the men would be coming to town for a qualifier would put an additional constraint on selling tickets for the women's game.

Remember, BYU played Oklahoma @ Jerry World simultaneously with the US v. El Salvador game.

The community has grown in the meantime. When we get our next USMNT game we'll demonstrate that this is a great place to host such.

I would not play any valuable USMNT games in Utah. It doesn't make sense for the team, it doesn't make for us.

The team needs home field advantage, it needs 80,000 people roaring away against the away team. It is embarassing for us when in our petit stadium we can't successfully pack people and it makes us look weak. Perhaps in the future, but I am still unconfident at the moment. I would be willing to reconsider if the USSF allows Real Salt Lake to do their ticket sales with priority to season ticket holders like they have done in the past to pack the stadium with an army of biased fans.

no offense Duiz, but thats an absolute load of shit in every way. hell, the US has only broken the 80k barrier one single time since 2000, gold cup final last year against mexico in the rose bowl. the closest the US got to 80k for a qualifier was the 55k that showed up for the qualifier against honduras at soldier field in chicago. hell, they managed 78k for the argentina game last year in new york and didnt even get 60k for the brazil game last week. the idea that the US draws 80k, or even needs something close to that, is complete rubbish. all-time the US has only played in 9 games on US soil where there were 80k present and most of those were gold cup games in LA.
    http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/us-men/records/attendance-records/largest-crowds-in-us.aspx

great case studies exist for US games in Columbus and other smaller venues. more important for games in Utah is the opponent. playing teams like Jamaica, Costa Rica, Canada, any of the island countries would draw incredibly pro-US crowds. games against Mexico, any of the latin american countries are going to be more split. it's the nature of Utah.

the fact is that the game at Rio Tinto was still one of the higher attended games (19k+) for any of the 2010 US WCQ's (from my wikipedia searches). it was the second highest attended game at any of the MLS venues (only the mexico game in crew stadium was higher), there were 3 other higher attended games total but they were nashville, soldier field and RFK (i guess an MLS venue).

realistically the ONLY time there is a consistently pro-US crowd at a soccer game is in columbus when we play Mexico. it is extremely rare to find pro-US crowds here, off the top of my head i can only really remember the costa rica game in 06 at rice eccles, the multiple crew stadium games against mexico, and the game at livestrong park last summer during the gold cup. the argentina game seemed pro-US, but there were still TONS of argentina fans there. the USSF would better the situation by selling tickets smarter, but they lack the resources to properly plan and execute an idea like that.

basically, i see absolutely no reason why they should not come back to the Utah for this cycle of world cup qualifying. Salt Lake has shown multiple times they can draw crowds. just pick the right opponent to limit/control the away fans.

How much I love the idea of this, I can not see this happen. To be an American is embracing where you came from and what you are IMO. No one knows the true definition of American. No matter how many generations of American born one is, they usually will go back to their "heritage" and support that nation. I have seen it many many times with Mexico, and surprisingly German backgrounds of people.

There has only been one occasion that I have witnessed myself that I was completely blown by. My roommate in college got a call from the Norway Olympic Track Coach and was asked to run for Norway (of course he would have to go to Norway and qualify). My roommate's dad was directly from Norway, while my roommate had never visited Norway (he was born and raised in South Dakota). He told the coach no, I am an American and if I can not compete for America than I will not compete in the Olympics.

To sum it up; No matter how much control you have, I have a hard time seeing an "extreme" support for the USMNT. Unless you get security to go around kicking people out of the stadium because they are not wearing the Red, White, and Blue.

Columbus has started to lose that luster of "all US crowd" as well.
The last time we played Mexico there, there was a good group of support for el tri.

This is to be expected, though, with a country like ours. We offer refuge to other nations. We scream "hey, come here, live the 'American dream' and shit". So why are we surprised that when we host a different nation, those fans show up to support them?

    [random rant]
Also, one of my biggest pet pieves is this notion that we in the US are "American". I know we don't really have a country name that suits itself to giving an easy nickname, but the guy from Mexico, canada, Honduras, Brazil, Chile, and even Panama can all say "I'm American too, technically"
    [end random rant

Eh. People are bandwagoning cowards. In 25 years, if the US finally breaks through to be a consistent top 10 team, there will be less of this.

One of the nicer things they would call you in Central America is "norteamericano". They realize that they are also American and will make the distinction.

One quick note about the El Salvador game at the Riot in 2009 - it was Labor Day weekend and it made it that much easier for El Salvadorians (?) from all over the west coast to drive in for the game.

Another thing to the remember is that the USSF has commented in the past about not wanting games on a Tuesday or Wednesday at the end of a int'l break to be on the west coast because it makes for more difficult travels for our euro based players to get back to their clubs and be ready to play on the weekend.

    Hi All -

I wasn't sure which thread would be best to post this, so I am posting here--I apologize if I throw off the flow of this particular thread. Going to be in SLC on July 21st for a business trip and wanted to get out to Rio Tinto and see a game. Looks like you guys have Colorado that night.

My question is: can one get to Rio Tinto via public transportation from downtown SLC? Doesn't look like I'll need a car for the trip itself so really would rather not have to rent one just to go out for the RSL game. I did a little research and it looks like there is a train/bus that goes from downtown SLC through Sandy with a stop nearby the stadium? Can you guys help me out?

    I appreciate it! Thanks!

Take a blue line train south from downtown to the "Sandy Expo 9400 south" stop (second to last one on that line). It's really easy.

If you have troubles, just ask around at the platform for some help. Most people here tend to be rather nice in assisting people with the public transit - assuming you speak at least half broken english or can find someone who speaks the same language as you.

The cost of a ticket is something like 5 or 6 bucks for the whole day. Buy it in the morning, ride around salt lake (even though it is free in certain areas) and be sure to keep it close by as the ticket for not having proof isn't as cheap

The stadium is a block or two westish from the rail stop (in blue at the bottom right of the picture).

If you're there any time close to the start of the game, just follow the crowd.
