I think I heard it on Men with Blazers, who admittedly are not experts. They referred back to the World Cup, but I can't remember any problems there. Not rumor mongering, but they made it sound like common knowledge. It was news to me.
My favorite line in that article: Dempsey's league total of 17 was one greater than the combined haul of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Dirk Kuyt, Lucas Leiva, Maxi Rodriguez, Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing - and there is a clear need for a prolific finisher. There's a lot regarding a Liverpool move that makes sense. And while they're not in the CL this season, they will be competing for a spot in the CL yearly.
So maybe if a non-CL team with potential (like Liverpool) makes an offer, then that is a gamble to weigh against letting his contract at Fulham run out - in the absence of other options. Not sure which i would do.
The only way this makes sense for Dempsey is if Liverpool doubles his salary AND greed trumps his Champions league aspirations. I suppose Liverpool could give him the challenge of elevating Liverpool's current mediocre team to a top 4 finish next season....
Stranger things have happened, but I just don't see Liverpool finishing above of either Man U/City, Arsenal. chelsea and probably even Newcastle, maybe Spurs.
If the decision is Fulham or Liverpool (which it surely isn't)...........that's a no-brainer. One will never qualify for the Champions League, while one will be a competing for trophies every season. In fact, they won a trophy last season.
I don't think its a no-brainer. The conversation significantly changes if a bonafide CL team can get him for free next year (there will certainly be more interest). That is a pretty strong argument for another year with Fulham (obviously without re-upping). But it isn't without risk (maybe his form dips, maybe he gets injured).
Except you've gotta strike while the iron is hot. Clubs want Clint now. What if he has a good 2012-13 campaign.............but not up to 2011-12's standards? What if he gets injured, and is out of action for 4-5 months? Will Roma and Arsenal (just to pick two random clubs) be interested then? He'll be a year older. Clint isn't a spring chicken. This time next year he'll be the wrong side of 30. And Fulham surely doesn't want him to walk for nothing at the end of the 2012-13 campaign. Everything points to Clint leaving Fulham this summer. The only question is where................
Spurs right now would finish above Newcastle, and blow away Liverpool. However, I don't see Newcastle repeating their performance next year. And Chelsea are not much better than Liverpool. Liverpool could finish as high as 5th next year as things currently stand. But Tottenham in 3 months could be a shadow of today's team, with both Modric and Bale sure to be wanted by many teams. They both might leave since the team didnt make the CL. So Liverpool could realistically finish 4th next year with a little luck, and that is without Dempsey.
Dempsey and Donovan are polar opposites in so, so many ways, so I'm not surprised their not friends. So long as they get along on the field it's all good.
Honestly, when you step on the field it doesn't matter how you feel about someone. You play together and you celebrate together. It doesn't matter how you feel about them off the field.
http://video.nbcsports.msnbc.com/nbc-sports/47579831#47579831 Get a clue - how could you read Dempsey's comment about not talking off the field as a negative - look at :57 - he's flat out asked "what's Landon saying to you?" and he responds with I don't know, we don't really talk that much away from the field... You really wanna try to use that as 'proof'? They really may not like one another but basing your judgement off of that is a serious jump in logic.
OK, but I wasn't informed in any way. Shouldn't they at least, ya know, tell me? And was it really sexist? I've been a ref for 10 years. I've never seen boys on the same team get into a confrontation during a game. I've seen them yell and argue, but they always resolve the situation without intervention from the coah/ref. On the other hand, I've seen at least 15 incidents of girls fighting with their teammates. I've had to separate girls, I've seen coaches send girls home. -Michael Connor, Psy.D Contrary to popular opinion, pointing out the well documented differences between males and females isn't sexist. Men and women should be equal, not identical.
Hi, You are quite correct that you should have been informed about the reasons your post was edited. I apologize for that. My only excuse is that I seem to be the lone moderator on duty and I'm at work, so I had to move quickly between appointments. That is not much of an excuse, I admit. I would question the point you're trying to make, regarding the editing of your post, however. There is a difference between that which is well documented and that which is the product of our own, necessarily subjective, observations. I am reasonably certain that the observation that "chicks" are more liable to intrasquad conflicts is yet to be supported by any consistent, reliable test. And I am also reasonably certain that the ad hoc observations of a single individual--even one so well positioned to observe as a referee--would constitute a valid test of that hypothesis. We recently had a lengthy discussion about this sort of thing that began in this forum and migrated to customer service and I am not going to subject the posters of this forum to another one. Please feel free to talk to me about this via a private conversation, if you'd like. Thanks, and I do regret not letting you know why your post had been edited at the time. edit: that includes everyone else. I'm going to delete posts that follow up on this topic. Please feel free to address me directly, via a conversation. Thanks. Stick with Dempsey as topic. He's more interesting than bungadiri.
I know! All I posted was, "Stick your foot in your mouth much?" and they deleted my post without even giving me a heads up. So much for customer service these days. No matter how hard you attempt to defend your position based on your personal experience, yes it was a sexist remark, and if you haven't picked up on the sarcasm in response to your first quote, yes it deserved to be removed. It may come as a shock to you, but women haven't cornered the market on holding personal grudges that impact their performance on the field.
I apologize if I offended anyone. I can assure everyone here that I am not sexist in any way. You're absolutely right about women not cornering the market on grudges. I was just pointing out that men and women tend to handle their grudges differently (potentially because of the differences in left/right brain connection). As for Dempsey, its quite obvious this is a non issue. Even if Dempsey and Donovan aren't best buddies off the pitch, it certainly doesn't effect the USMNT. EDIT: USMNT/Donovan talk is off topic, so back to Dempsey transfer saga
Thanks, and I'm happy to leave this (very gracious especially given the circumstances) post up. I'd like to say for the record that I certainly never intended to imply that you intended offense or that you are at at all sexist. It had as much to do with insuring an environment that welcomes discussion about the game and our players from everybody, and I know from having read your posts that you contribute to that effort very positively on a regular basis.
Geez, this happens too much in YA. Anyway, No way Liverpool gets top 4. That's ridiculous. Well at this point I can only see him going to Arsenal. And that is a long shot.
And this thing with Liverpool. Dempsey isn't going to be a player that pushes them over the top and into the CL, and quite frankly, that's what Liverpool need. I'm sure Dempsey could fit in at many CL clubs. He can also take a decent team (Fulham) and make them good. However, I'm not sure that he can take a good team and make them great.
