Our defense wasn't used to that used to that and we were far from a fluid set-up to begin with. Regardless -- they're not supposed to hang out in the box to "cover" just because the center middie has suddenly taken it upon himself to noodle around there. Reyna had decided, for the moment, to drop into the back line and orchestrate from there, where you might have more space and time. Ghana smelled blood and closed that space.
Hillarious. This is comic. Defenders are not used to providing cover for teammates on the ball in the defensive third of the field!!!???!!! Wow. There really isn't any point in engaging in a discussion when fundamental principles of soccer are seen as optional. I mean, U10 kids should be taught this stuff. And as I've written many, many times over the years, I am not absolving Reyna of blame on the play. He was caught in possession in a very vulnerable spot on the field. But he was very far from the only player making errors. Both CB's went AWOL, failing in a fundamentally basic part of the game and a crucial part of any defender's training, and that's inexusable for a professional CB. EDIT: Plus, my comments were specifically about the term "losing your mark", which a prior poster had incorrectly used in describing that play. Reyna's error, Conrad's and Onyewu's errors, Cherundolo's and Dempsey's errors, had ZERO to do with anyone losing his mark. You can't lose your mark when YOU have possession of the ball.
Also,Cherundolo ran upfield when there was no way the ball could have gone to him. Let's not forget a very poor ball from Deuce.
Interesting. When I was that age I was being taught by some of the best soccer minds in the country. But now you called what I wrote hilarious and comic, so you must be right. But then, knowing nothing about you, your comments make me think you've never been on the field in a similar game situation*. I'm sure you do know what you're talking about though. Funny old internet. Back to the comedy thread. (I wasn't saying "C'mon man" when Reyna completely ********ed that up himself.) Mike Lapper's 30 yard chip of Tony Meola is still my candidate here. *And no, I don't mean a world cup quarterfinal.
Don't just blame him. Brek Shea's decision to dribble. 4 US players decision to stand around and let the shot get off (Stephens, Okugo, Opara and whoever was playing RB at the time) And Kitchen and I believe Villafana on the second goal - literally ball watching the goal in. Porter's decision to leave Hamid in, and save subs until minute 88. All qualify in addition to Sean.
USSF's decision to have white on white for the jersey numbers. Switched to blue, but the switch will cost them at least six figures.....c'mon man.
shared c'mon man moment: 2002 QF - The two trees (Sanneh and Pope) sandwiching Michael Ballack yet failing to get a head on the ball.
German Invasion #1 - The Mason and Wagner Experiment. Dooley worked out, sure. But those other two? Yikes.
In honor of a new Hall of Famer. How about the time he got his nickname against Romania in 1994 WC? No, not the Fat Tony nickname. The "Near Post" Meola nickname...
well I think that Keller blunder(he made up for it in his great career I think)it happened a bit before i moved to the US.... but pretty much people mentioned a lot of the worse ones..... I want to say the Ref not giving the HAND BALL in the Germany game in the 2002 WC
i'm losing a lot of my memory, and struggle to remember much during the 90s when i first started following the USMNT, but the Mike Burns moment will forever be burned into my memory. these are just the first 10 memories that popped in my head. 1. Sean Johnson 2012 v El Salvador 2. Kasey Keller v Mexico kicks into attacker 3. Jeff Agoos 2002 the entire WC performance 4. Mike Burns 1998 v Germany 5. Claudio Reyna 2006 v Ghana 6. Jonathan Bornstein 2011 Gold Cup final 7. Pablo Mastroeni 2006 red card v Italy 8. Tim Howard 2010 goal allowed against Ghana 9. Ricardo Clark 2009 red card v Italy 10. Sacha Kljestan 2009 red card v Brazil
Yeah I hated that Mike Burns freak goal..that should never happen on the Germany corner kick....always sticks in your mind.... Agoos I remember seeing him a few World Cup qualifiers and he seemed pretty good at times.... I guess any mistakes in the atual world cup are the worst...secondly the qualifiers in my mind....
Also features Thomas Dooley jumping blindly into midair....with his back to the ball......AND KLINSMANN on the 2nd goal. C'mon man..
