The new Baltimore Bohemians FC could set the city up for an MLS team if the team gets fan backing. They already have a buzz going around the region and the mayor of Baltimore is trying to get a a MLS size SSS built. Either DC United bait or a great home for a new team. It would be amazing for MLS to have a SSS in downtown baltimore in Inner Harbor. http://www.uslsoccer.com/scripts/ru...+E+47116+News/Display/+42834749+36407099+8625

Plus, they have a developer ready to build it for the city. The problem may be that the new Arena is a higher priority and has city council backing.

Every team in the country would be viable with enough fan backing...

Really? It has been my understanding that the Westport developer might be interested in providing the land, but I haven't seen any reports of paying for a stadium.

There have been some reports in the BBJ and Sun (I'd have to look for the links). I will say that I know the developer and his son due so some community association work I'm involved in and they both really do want to build this and have the team come. Now, that is a far, far, far cry from it actually happening, but Baltimore does have a developer and and area to build it and the city is supporting this.

I would rather have DC stay and have Baltimore get an "expansion" team sometime after NY2 comes on board, but that may be a pipe dream. I don't think the Bohemian team is going to do that well (for reasons I probably shouldn't publicize annonymously).

Well, it's the Maryland Stadium Authority doing the study. Presumably, it would be funded the way they usually fund stadiums, which is with an Entertainment Tax on sales at the venue, probably mixed with some up-front money from the team, and maybe some tax abatements. The articles I've read said there would be a more detailed proposal included in the study.

The Bohemian's aren't being run by the same knuckleheads that ran Crystal Palace Baltimore are they?

The club won't be a "smashing success" only because they're a PDL club. Which means constant roster turnover, and NCAA-style hack and attack soccer.

No, they are being run by someone different. And them not being actually in Baltimore doesn't help either.

Baltimore is a major league city. The fans respond to a major league team. They won't respond to a USL team any more than I respond to Real Maryland in Rockville over DC United (I live in Silver Spring). Any city than can draw 12k for a crappy Blast product is a soccer hotbed and would be an ideal place for a new expansion Baltimore Bays (or Americans or Crabs or whatever).

I hope an ownership group emerges. As a DCU supporter, I salivate at the prospect of the clasicos. Baltimore has a good quantity of younger adults living in the city to provide an excellent seed for supporters' groups. I am also amazed at how many dive bars show Euro league games in the city. I'd expect it from snobby faux-dive bars here inside our beltway (I give Irish/English pubs a pass) but there's a lot of closet soccer fans up there.

I have always thought this was sort of the problem with Baltimore as an MLS city. Their self-image as a sports town comes from an era when they were a much more important market than they are now. I mean, by the 'major league city' logic, why watch MLS either? Why not Eurosnob/NFLosnob it? Baltimore is a market in the same tier as Portland, but Portland doesn't have an NFL or an MLB team, and knows they aren't getting one soon. (But then again, it's also in the same tier as Kansas City, and an owner has finally come along and really made that one work.)

It might work if they went totally grass roots. Natty Boh gear will probably give them some good cheap pub. And besides, I think the team will play closer to Aberdeen. It could work for the same reason the Bowie Baysox works even though DC is a major league town.

My experience is that indoor soccer attendance has a very weak correlation with outdoor attendance, and the correlation that does exist is probably slightly negative. Indoor soccer is where you take the kiddies to be jock-jammed at a more kid-friendly environment and for a more reasonable price than the NBA.

With the new ownership that was announced for DC United, it is looking less likely that they are coming to Baltimore.

This may have to do with a rumor that was brought up recently, connected to The Drug is Football. A troll also tried to use it as a suggestion that the Revs might become Orlando City MLS, something I don't believe for one second.

Baltimore Revolution has a nice ring to it. (see: Star-Spangled Banner) FWIW, I seriously doubt it will happen. But if Kraft has any serious design on any move, he needs to look at himself, first. What have the Revs done for their fans lately to deserve better turnout?

A good name for a Baltimore team in MLS would be "Baltimore Browns FC". There is some history to back it up, besides the fact that it sounds good. Both the current Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens were branded "Browns" before they moved to Baltimore. "St Louis Browns" became the "Baltimore Orioles" and the "Cleveland Browns" became the "Baltimore Ravens". Of course they would have to check out any legal impediments that could be posed by the Orioles or Ravens.

It sounds plausible, but I do not know if I believe it. For some reason, if it is a real possibility, then I see it going down as the link suggests - with the team moving to Baltimore. I am convinced that Orlando will be a true expansion franchise. If only to create continuity with the USL squad.

I love that face logo on the Bohemian's jersey. I know it's very minor league but still I freakin' love it.

edit: and now that I look into it...I guess it's a sponsor not the logo LOL...whatever it's cool.

Follow-up to this comment, I was recently able to buy a Baltimore Bohemians scarf as far away as Kent Island, around an hour's drive away. Guess where? Liquor store, of course, right next to other drinking-themed paraphernalia.

It's a heckuva leg up on most PDL teams.

DC Uniteds stadium situation is pathetic. Any chance this comes back to life if Westport gets off the ground?
