The Search for a New Manager

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Suss, May 24, 2004.

  1. Sky just reported that the key for Benitez is whether the Valencia board will give him the money to acquire new players and build toward success in the CL next year. The hitch, apparently, is that Valencia are more than £70 million in debt--and may not be willing to give him the transfer budget he wants to emulate Porto.

Huge coverage of the GH story on Sky, BTW. It included some (probably non-representative) "supporter-on-the-street" interviews. A pretty mixed bag of opinions, with all the usual suspects named, except for two interviewees who thought Thommo should get a shot.

    Oh, and one for Dalglish.

I agree. wonder of wonders. We think a like. :D

As to why people would want the job -- its the most famous club in the world even with Real and ManU with their massive cash and commercial machines. All of these men would have lived their youth during the magnificent 4 European Cup years. There is a really good playing staff already available with the prospect of adding more. Its LIVERPOOL for Christ's sake!

    Dude, "seemingly"!

Personally, if Liverpool came calling, I would take the job in an heartbeat, but easy for me to say of course.

    AWww man! "This is Liverpool"
Benitez and Mourino would each donate one left nut each just to be considered for manager.

Quote: "When they start singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' my eyes start to water. There have been times when I've actually been crying while I've been playing".

I really hope it will be Mourinho.

But do you guys think of John Toshack???? He's had a good track record in Spain.

I'd love to see MO'N. What's he got left to prove at Celtic? And he worked miracles at Leicester (relatively speaking). A guy with a track record at more than one place is always preferrable, especially if one of those is a smaller club.

Benitez and Mourinho would also be good choices. Where were they before Valencia and Porto?

I'm not sold on Ranieri yet (though he was hard done by at Chelsea).

I`d have thought they would only need a couple of players, Liverpool would really need 6 or 7, and two or three years, to get to Valencias position.
I`ve been watching some of the Sky sports news coverage, and trying to understand those scouser`s. I`ll take your word for what they`ve been saying;).

I am quite surprised that everyone is against a former Liverpool player to coach Liverpool. He brought much success to Liverpool as a player. The four European Championships that were mentioned before, Dalglish had a part in all of them. As a manager he won the double his first year as player/ manager. Something that Houllier, or anyone since for that manner, have done since. After he left Liverpool and went to Blackburn he helped them move up into the Premiership. In their first year in they were second to Man. U. The next year they won it. Not too bad. I am a firm believer that a former Liverpool player who understands they way Liverpool plays should be at the helm. With former teammates Sammy Lee and Phil Thompson helping manage I think that they would steer Liverpool back to glory. I think Dalglish's record speaks for itself. He did leave on a sour note (after the Hillsborough disaster) but I think that is quite understandable.

Dalglish would be a step backwards. I've seen somebody say in other postings that Dalglish/Venables/Graham Taylor were all once great managers, but in their last positions failed miserably because the game has changed and they haven't. I believe this.
If we were to consider bringing back Dalglish, why not just put Thompson in the role of Manager. The season we finished second was when Ged was out and Thompson led us through the unbelievable winter and early spring we had.
But O'Neill knows how to win in Britain. He would provide us the best chance of winning the Premiership, and therefore would be my top choice.
Mourinho would give us the tactical nuance for Europe, but we need England before we think about Europe.
Benitez would be crazy to leave Valencia. He is a forward and a defender away from greatness. If he gets those two pieces, they WILL win the champs league next year. If he were to come, it would be great if he could bring Baraja (the best midfielder in the world) and Ayala.
Hitzfeld would be a good option. Players would be willing to come and play for him. He has already a few members of Bayern publicly criticize Hoeness for letting him go. And besides, Ballack coming too would be a good partner for Stevie as well.
Curbishley would have been a good choice last summer. That would have given him two years to get it right, and a third year of winning the EPL or being fired. If he were to come in now, he would have a year of minimum champs league qualification and then a title expected.
But hey, if all these don't work out, we could just bring back Roy Evans. At least we'd be entertaining on the field and have some nice gossip off it.

Was thinking abou the "why would they come to Anfield" Q this morning...

I think the way the club treated Houllier would be a big big draw. They gave him five years and finished on good terms. Compared that to Chelsea. Which would you choose?

I also suspect they can dangle the prospect of a sizeable transfer fund.

Why Liverpool? One of the biggest names in football with a terrific winning history. 4th place in the EPL with players, who once augmented with a few "good purchases" And a progressive ambitious manager who understands todays game and the way it changes could go all the way.
And these people want to be 'That' manager.

    It's Liverpool for christsake...!!!

Not to puff out my chest or anything, but people keep talking about us as if we were fucking Fulham or something. (No offense, Cottagers.) We do have a smidgen of history, and some of our managers are amongst the most famous in history. We are about to put up a new stadium, and surely there'll be enough room for a new statue on one of the ends, should any of these gents merit it.

True, we are not in the CL final this year. But I still consider the Liverpool manager spot slightly more prestigious than Porto or Chelsea, and just as prestigous as Bayern, or any of the revolving door clubs in Spain.

One would think, in this age of instant communications. That it would be to the City of Birmingham's advantage to have the schools teach the children English. Instead of that incomprehensible garbled noise they've always made.

I do have to admire the way they understand each other though, when it's beyond anyone else’s capabilities.

Piss off! Have you anything intelligent to contribute? Liverpool is a great club, with tremendous support, a predicted new stadium, and a place in the history of the game. If you've got a massive ego (and every succesful manager does) then bringing the club back to the top in England and Europe is a direct ticket to historical renown. Or do I need to tranlate that to Brum?

Did the Dey-do-doh line touch a raw nerve or something? I`ve never questioned Liverpools big club status, in fact I`ve only ever really heard Villa, Spurs and Everton fans talk in the above terms (stadium, support, history etc.). Liverpool fans have never felt the need to justify their club, maybe the situation there is more critical than I realised.

If you`re refering to my suggestion that Benitez would be crazy to leave Valencia for Anfield, it`s more to do with the timing than anything. If he were to win the ECL next year his job there would be done and he could think of moving. Surely it would be madness to leave the La liga Champs now. Do you think Wenger should now go to Barca or Inter (or Liverpool) to revive great clubs to their former glory. No, he has to win the ECL with Arsenal.

Good luck with the new guy anyway. From reading the papers Mourinho looks like he might have the ego you`re looking for. He might prefer to be Manager of Liverpool instead of Coach of Chelsea, and the greater control that would give him.

Don't be a total dung head. The only reason you understand that crap known as Brum is because you listen to it all day. The rest of the UK can't fathom it out. (oi'll g-it foive mo minits) Now piss off back down yer coil oil

I typed `They do though, don`t they though` into this Scouse-translator and it came up with: Dee do dough, don`t dee dough. See I was close.

    http://www.whoohoo.co.uk/brummie-translator.asp

And on the Brummie translator. Are you going to Birmingham came out as this: Am ya gooin' ter Beeermigem.

I do say Birmingham like that, maybe we should rename the city.

Since everyone seems to want me to piss off I shall do so, see you in the fight for fourth place again next season. (I was going to add a smilie there but I`m not joking).
