You've never heard of Power Rankings?? You evidently have the internet. You could google the the term.
What's interesting to me about the rankings is that our lowest score is consistently from the SB Nation power rankings which is voted on by a panel of about three dozen people continent-wide. Those people are *not* professional journalists, but just by the sheer value of consensus and averages, I would lean towards it as the most accurate. (In the context of soccer, I think I'd take the consensus opinion of 36 soccer-nuts over one individually composed power ranking (since power rankings in an unbalanced schedule year makes it very difficult to ascertain teams' strengths relative to each other). Personally, I'd put us at 7, I think. Until we can demonstrate an ability to score consistently, I'd worry about our ability to really stick in the top half. It's like Joe Cannon said: 0-0 ain't bad, but you can't expect to go a whole season without getting scored on. We will need to score some of our own.
Do you really have to be an arrogant ass? What is this particular "power ranking" rating? If you google power rankings all sorts of stuff comes up. I know what the term is, but was wanting to ask what these are specifically ranking. You really can be a dick sometimes, you know that. YOu and Johnny can keep making up reasons why nobody posts here, but your dual attitudes of mocking and putting down people is the reason in my opinion. Why the hell would anyone post an honest question (which I did), when this is the type of response I get? I rarely post here, don't troll, and was just asking a question.
Please refrain from namecalling. I used a winky face to point out that most questions of that nature can be answered much more quickly by googling the term than by posting in here and waiting days for an answer. I used winkies a lot. They please me greatly. This is a list of major web sources that do weekly MLS power rankings, with the position that Vancouver occupies. Beginning this week, I'm summing up what the source says as well.
Week 5 - 7.1 6 - Goal.com: 10 sloppy minutes doesn't detract from good team. 6 - B/R (Koczwara): "Issues with putting the ball in the back of the net" 7 - MLS: The meltdown was an aberration. Better team for 60. (0) 7 - ESPN: Set record then the roof caved in. (-1) 7 - Soccer By Ives: Le Toux finally scores again, then 11 minute collapse. (0) 7 - Soccer America: Caps crumble after record, can't contain 10 minute burst. 7 - SI: Comedy of errors, but record a notable achievement. 8 - NBC: "Dandy shape...8 of 15 points"; Barry Robson still to come 9 - SB Nation: Set record then prompt fell apart. Offense must produce. (0) * This was not used in previous weeks and so is not included in the average.
I added two new rankings into the index, but it seems that there is general consensus at this point: we are a slightly-above-middle-of-the-pack team this year. If I were doing a power ranking this week, I think I'd keep us at 6 only because (as a Caps fan) our loss was on the road, the goals we gave up were (I believe) uncharacteristic of this season's Caps, and we are just about ready to find our form offensively. I think the average ranking of 7.11 is pretty fair until Mattocks shows his mettle, Harris plays 90, and the offense clicks. Once Robson arrives, I wonder if we around the 5 position. The only teams that I feel have proven themselves better than us are RSL, Kansas City (we get to test that in 10 days!), Houston, San Jose, and maybe Seattle. Red Bulls beat us if we can't contain their strike-duo, other than that, I think we are good against any team in the league.
Sheik loves to make jabs at other posters, but cries like a bitch when people give it back to him. Keep posting, even if no one else is. I too enjoy reading others analysis and like the rankings all put together. Nice to see what the opinion of the Whitecaps is from non-fans etc.
i thought you- the Copper Sheik-- had moved beyond enjoying 'stirring up shit'-- i really dont understand your postings on this topic
This is the second or third time Sheik has used this line of reasoning to dismiss people out of hand as fans. I live in Kamloops right now, have loved and followed the Whitecaps my entire adult life, but because I live in Kamloops he's said I'm less qualified (unworthy?) to comment on Vancouver - despite the fact I've spent more than 25 years there. Going to games is not necessary correlative to loyalty as a fan. I live in Kamloops, so (right now) I can't make games. Despite the distance, and me having no car, I did make it to two matches last year. Then there's the money factor. I'm a student and can't afford to eat out often, attend matches etc. I just got a predicted expenses worksheet from UBC. Next year will cost me about $32,000 and I won't be able to hold a job during that time because of the nature of the program. I'll be lucky to afford a half dozen matches. Setting aside my situation, Vancouver is the most expensive city in Canada. If I had a wife, kids, house, car ... these things add up and make it tough to afford things like games for a lot of people. If Sheik only meant that people who *can* afford to go don't go because they are fairweather fans, well that's a fair comment, there *are* a lot of those in Vancouver, and I'd side with him. But when Sheik goes out of his way to rip people in this forum, with no knowledge of who they are, where they are at financially, and there reasons for living where they do, it just demonstrates his general belligerence and innate rudeness. Kinda sad, but that's how he gets off.
What does it matter? Regardless, I'm a season ticket holder, and missed maybe 2 games last year, oh and I catch the away games on TV too.
1. Keep posting this stuff WitC, I like reading it, even if I don't respond. I like to post quality not quantity whenever possible then just "I agree" etc. 2. If all of you don't feed the trolls they will eventually go away. There is no reason to take the bait and get into sh1t tossing wars. Let the trolls act like trolls, when they don't get a response they're after they'll turn their attention elsewhere.
Holding at 7 in the MLS.com rankings. 8 at goal.com, which is down from 6, even though we had a blank gameweek. Big test on the horizon against Sporting midweek, then another tough one vs. Dallas on the weekend. How they handle the league's best and then a perennial playoff team within four days will tell a lot about how far along this team is in Martin Rennie's rebuilding process. mls.com
Agreed--please keep posting. And agreed on point #2. Although on the topic of trolls, I'll quote the immortal Forrest Gump: Stupid is as stupid does. I agree with the overall drift of the power rankings that we're a slightly above average team at the moment. But I'm eagerly waiting to see what the addition of Mattocks, Barbara and Robson will do to both the play on the field and our rankings by late-season. I still haven't seen anything to be really disappointed about this year.
There's not much around yet that I could find. 5 - Yahoo Sports: I said it back in March, and I'll say it again here: Watch out for the Whitecaps. Of course, I also said the same thing about TFC at the beginning of the season. (Last week 7) http://sports.yahoo.com/news/rbny-fan-2012-week-8-mls-power-rankings-134600467.html
