Odds are that F1 will price themselves out of the market, and IndyCar will come and pick up the pieces. -Off topic, but NJ would not be the first F1 street race in the USA. That would have been Long Beach, another place that is now an IndyCar race.
I used to watch the Phoenix Grand Prix in the early 90's. Think it lasted all of 3 years. It was a F1 race. Loved the Maclarens with a Honda engine. Best open wheel car of the time.
Not like NASCAR or IndyCar could never use it. The NASCAR Nationwide series races on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, as does F1. //Super pumped for the F1 race at Port Imperial in 2013.
NBC will be broadcasting 4 games. He is asking about streaming of games I believe, which is something completely different as NBC's streaming plans are not set yet. Clenbuterol, check the post below. That is the latest information we have on streaming for NBC. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=25478606&postcount=688
Not sure how it compares to NASCAR but Formula one has about 600 million viewers during its season. http://www.sportbusiness.com/news/168570/formula-one-tv-audience-reaches-600m Problem is though, without having the USA as a major hotbed for the sport, its revenues are being curtailed. To get bigger revenues you simply must be a player in the USA. Much like Soccer, it needs the USA to become bigger fans of the sport. Anyway ill be in New Jersey for the GP in 2013. I hope my beloved Ferrari will be more competitive by then !!
Ah, I didn't know that. Interesting. Yeah, it's going to be awesome. I'm extremely fascinated at the fact that this race has some close quarters, with a lot of houses right next to the road. And the elevation will make it more interesting, with over a 100 feet in height different between the upper and lower section of the track. Now I just need make friends with someone who lives on those houses in Boulevard East.
Im sure they will try to get as many different racing series as possible. They will also be hosting a MOTO GP race and a V8 supercars series race as well.(Its our Australian version of Nascar, except we don't race on ovals)
After watching this video, [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMqpGUuUQ9E"]F1 New Jersey Track Onboard Lap *HQ* 2 - YouTube[/ame] Im still trying to figure out how these people are going to get access to their houses once all the barricades are up !!
The current word is NASCAR is working on bring NW or the trucks to Austin. With already 3 NW races at road course I suspect they end up sending the trucks unless they move a NW from one of the three. If they do that it would be Road America. Watkins Glen is paired with a Cup race and Montreal brings NASCAR to Canada. Trucks currently have no races at a road course.
The F1 Port Imperial race really intrigued me. Lot of straight away so it will be a fast race. A few of the bends look like they might be off camber turns and the corners at the end of the straightaways makes me think we might see more passing. It may not have the prestige of Monaco but it might be the better street race and not a parade.
F1 had a street race in Detroit a few years back that went IndyCar as well. Later, it moved to another course on Belle Isle, which was run on "streets" also (in quotes because Belle Isle is mostly a park, with roads but without an urban street grid).
This guy explains perfectly why soccer broadcasts haven't caught on with casual viewers. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TX5hkcMcK2o"]Soccer and the Mechanics of Sport on T.V. - YouTube[/ame]
Excellent video. Although, I fell like the NHL should be apart of the big 3, not the NBA. The only reason the NBA is considered apart of the BIG 3 is because ESPN shoves it down the viewers throat every single night, with 1 highlight being shown of hockey. Just like with soccer. I'm just hoping that in 2016, ESPN signs the NHL and MLS, while the NBA goes back to NBC.
LOL WUT ... How is the NHL (not the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the entire NHL) in any way, shape, or form bigger than the NBA ? And uh .... ESPN has MLS rights, right now.
Game 7 of the Stanley Cup last year had a 5.7 viewership rating. Tied for the highest rating in NHL history. Game 6 of the NBA finals last year had a 15.0 rating. Basketball is far more popular than hockey, and it's not because ESPN is "shoving it down our throats".
Well, you know there's also fact that it would actually be Disney pumping the NBA down our throats (with ABC and ESPN) in partnership with TNT.
One could make a fair argument that the NBA is even more popular than MLB these days - at least judged by ratings. The NHL, though still popular, lags far behind the NBA.
You could show hockey all day every day, have Barry Melrose analyze the hell out of every game on ESPN and it still wouldn't get near the ratings of basketball. I'm from Minnesota and hockey is a bigger deal, but besides the Minnesota, ND, northern Wisconsin, Michigan, and New England hockey isn't a big part of the culture. I learned how to play hockey on a pond. Most states don't even have frozen ponds.
The NBA was more popular than the NHL ten years ago when ESPN did NOT have the NBA and DID have the NHL.
He's completely wrong with regard to the popularity of the NHL and NBA, but he is correct that the NBA needs to return to NBC if only to revive the greatest sports TV song in the history of the universe.
