    Re: Stand Your Ground

I dunno. Ask the Syrian rebels. Or the Kurds. I mean, they were both able to defeat a regular army and gain their freedom, right?

Even the European Resistance in WW2, who were backed by the Allies and certainly sent lots of Jerries home in boxes, had no prayer of ending the occupation by themselves.

Heck, even having an actual army doesn't mean you'll automatically defeat another army. You just make the odds a bit more even.

Why have the Turks, Iraqis, Nazis and now the Syrians able to succeed where we have failed? Because they were not fighting their wars halfway around the world. They did not care about world opinion. And they were committed to victory at any cost and were willing to do whatever it took to win. We could be successful too but we'd have to channel our inner Hitler, Saddam, etc. and do all sorts of hideous things. Is that who we want to become? No? So we go in at a massive disadvantage trying to fight insane fanatics who literally have nothing to lose with our Marquis de Queensbury rules of engagement. Oh, and we bankrupt ourselves in the process.

If it came to American civilians fighting the US armed forces (and presumably some sort of "coalition of the willing"), the Red Dawners might find small successes in the mountains or swamps. Until the chemical weapons or tactical nukes get dumped on them. Or until they run into the Special Forces or SEALs or whoever. And they'll make life unpleasant for some of the troops on the ground with IEDs and snipers, I suppose. But, like the Resistance, they won't win militarily by themselves against a determined plutocracy that has the best armed forces money can buy.

    On what grounds?

I mean, Cal always seems to get out of town a step ahead of the No 'Countability Archons of Anal-retention, but there hasn't been any talk so far of violations. UK hasn't had any other national titles vacated, and they've sure as hell been on probation enough times for that to happen if it was merited.

We are organizing a lynch mob and yet have the time to defend Kentucky basketball? Go figure.

We're not organizing a lynch mob. We're suspecting George Zimmerman of being a lynch mob.

You gotta have something to suggest they did, or you wouldn't be this certain. What is it?

You weren't asking what Kentucky had done- that was me.

If you don't log off and go put some Gold Bond on your mama's taint like she asked, you probably won't be able to use the computer next week.

    I'm just saying.

    Re: Stand Your Ground

But it's cheating the kind of rules that are so archaic and counterproductive, I actually find honor in those who break them. UMass had to prevent they didn't win those games in 1996 because Marcus Camby took money from an agent. Big whoop. We're going to pretend Memphis didn't reach the national final game because the SAT people suspected Derrick Rose, who got qualifying scores in the ACT by the way, had someone else take his SAT.

These are only rules created to maintain the façade that these NBA-bound players are somehow recruited to schools to be students, and that big time collegiate sports are amateur, because these de facto pro athletes do not receive proper compensation for professional services rendered, and that "amateurism" is inherently good.

Oh, and the Fab Five getting their Final Four vacated - bullshit too (the "booster" in question was never a booster). I'm sure John Calipari is a shithead. But people who make a big deal out of his rule-breaking are bigger shitheads.

    Re: Stand Your Ground

Oh, by the way, as someone who's an advocate of responsible urban planning and walkable neighborhoods, I kinda want to talk about how auto-centric communities like the gated community in Sanford contribute to the attitude that someone who's walking to get somewhere is suspect. Can we talk about that?

Zimmerman tells the dispatcher, “This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.” I mean, the kid was WALKING.

    Re: Stand Your Ground

Few months ago I had a cop give me the twice-over while on an evening walk in an unfamiliar town. Pulled up next to me, then flipped a u, pulled into a side street right in front of me, guess when I didn't start fleeing or something he thought I was okay, despite the fact that I was, you know, walking.

Oh, and that whole "being white" thing probably helped too.

Pretty good article. They've got Zimmerman down to 170 pounds now. That's about 80 pounds he's lost in the past week.

You can blame to a certain degree, Oscar Newman & his Defensible Space theory, and/or the perversion of it as evidenced by the real estate/development industry's creation of the "gated community" to protect us all from the people who don't look like us.

In attempting to forcibly create a sense of community and territoriality that encourages people to "defend" their space with natural surveillance and dissuade outsiders from entering those areas uninvited, the eventual codification of these concepts created the Fortress America style gated communities such as this that provide a very false sense of "safety".

    Re: Stand Your Ground

CNN did more audio work to try to determine if Zimmerman used a racial epithet on his call to the police. I had never heard this part of the recording previously. The reporter and the sound guy helping him suggested that it sounded like he was saying "cold", possibly because it was unseasonably cold that night. I'm not convinced the word is "cold", but whatever it is, I don't think it is the epithet, because it isn't an "ew" sound, it is a rounded vowel like an "uh" or "o" sound.

I was shocked at this, as well. I could not believe that NBC would want to push the "Zimmerman is a racist" angle.
I mean, isn't it obvious that all the killings of black people by non-blacks are racist? And I guess they waited a month to report on this, until they got all the "facts" lined up.

    Re: Stand Your Ground

The media has long been a problem in this country. Ever since news went from being a network loss leader to being a ratings earner, the concept of "journalism" has really gone out the window. What NBC did is really no better than Breitbart and their credibility should take a similar hit. Like the fake documents and Dan Rather, however, I love the response from the right. It amounts to exoneration for the target. This doesn't change anything for me and the full conversation is still every bit as damning to me.

Does anyone dispute the fact that Martin was doing nothing wrong before Zimmerman began stalking him? Does anyone have a doubt in their mind that Zimmerman doesn't stalk him or call the cops if he sees a kid wearing a pair of Dockers and a Brooks Brothers sweater? Does anyone dispute the notion that Americans should be free to wear whatever they want that doesn't run afoul of our decency laws and not be harassed or killed for it?

I think the point has been made that there were over reactions all the way around on this. Fine. Let it go. The way we all feel a need to line up left and right in this country boggles the mind. We've even had someone come in a finger Zimmerman as a ..... DEMOCRAT! Seriously? His party affiliation never entered my mind. My biggest concern throughout is that the police bungled the investigation. We clearly don't have the full story on that yet but there are some very questionable things as pointed out by Wallace on the video and by some as yet uncontested statements by the family and it's representatives. I'm glad that there is a parallel fed investigation. Hope there is justice eventually, whatever that may be.
