The "last man back" isn't in any rules, it's one of the common misconceptions of the rules. Most people confuse last man back with DOGSO, because most instances of a "last man back foul" is a DOGSO.
It was a poor red card. The play was even off to the side and not directly in front of the goal. It could and I think should have been a yellow or just a foul. I'll take it, we were on the wrong end of a lot of reds last year, but it was a bad call IMO.
I thought it was a straight red from my angle in the East Stand. From that angle you could see that McCarthy basically mugged him by pulling him back and stopping his acceleration which would have lead to a 1 v 1 versus the keeper. I thought it was clearly a DOGSO and I was sitting with a referee who called it a red card before it was pulled out. It could have gone either way but it would have been a clear goal scoring opportunity had CJ's progress not been stopped by the pulling of the jersey. A lot of players would have gone down but CJ was fighting it.
No. That was textbook, straight to the back pocket. There was no choice about it and N.E. wasnt done hard. What else could he (ref) do. Nothing. The same exact call could've been made twenty yards higher up field. Kudos to Kei for knocking that one down, and to CJ for being in that attacking position. Thats the game -- the rule is harsh. Chance favors the aggressor. The Laws do try and promote the attack in some limited contexts. If Collin/Besler drags down an attacker in that position, he should be off. Its no longer soccer, its just a desperate game of grab and tug.
Yeah, the only way that play does not result in a red is when there is another defender nearby who can conceivably help on the play somehow (not counting the keeper). Since there wasn't, it's a clear DOGSO. McCarthy knew the price and he sacrificed himself to save a goal. So would any other defender in his place, and that's why he didn't contest the call.
Meh. You're both right. It was textbook, but it's frequently not called. I'd consider it a borderline red card - especially that early in a 0-0 game. If the red card hadn't been called, there would've been momentary outrage, but virtually nobody would've been talking about it today unless McCarthy had then scored a hattrick (not bloody likely). The thing is, we've taken care of business. We've gotten six points from two games we needed to get six points from if we really want to be the top of the East. We absolutely have to be able to beat New England at home - which we did. And drawing vs winning at DC United is another good sign.
That's weak. I have the feeling we'll be seeing a lot of cards for it then. If it's field of play, then I think he missed a few more cards like during the jig.
I'm not a fan of the strict, harsh, tie the refs hands approach to the DOGSO red card on plays like that, but what clinches it for me as the correct call is that McCarthy really didn't make any play on the ball, and the sole extent of his action was to impede CJ from being alone on goal. If he makes a play on the ball and takes CJ out in the process, to me that's a yellow if it happens outside the box, but fouling the man who's in on goal with no attempt to make a "soccer play" really seals it. So Zusi get's a caution for his celebration but Kei and CJ didn't for theirs? That, on the other hand, makes no sense to me
The red apparently told Kei he should get a yellow for that, Kei apologized and said it wouldn't happen again, verbal warning in this instance apparently
That freaked me the hell out when I started reading this thread today. Any more predictions for Dallas, oh wise sage?
It frustrates me that every replay of the red card offense I see being cited don't show it from the beginning. McCarthy was beaten from the word go and he played CJ instead of the ball and it looked clear to me that his only intention was to foul and hope for the best.
And didn't McCarthy (or maybe it was Soares) do the exact same thing only minutes before (which would be mug him) but only got a foul called? I thought it was a fair call. I bet CJ was hurting a bit yesterday when he rolled out of bed.
So you know, I sent a copy of the seat locator to our sponsorship team, so they should be notified about usage of that as a ticket stub.
Oh yes, I will most definitely have another prediction. I'll wait for the Dallas game thread to unveil it.
Is this why the flyover never happened? (I didn't just miss it, right?) They showed the planes (A-10s?) on the video board, but I never saw anything actually fly over the stadium. It looked like there was a smallish single engine plane just south of stadium at about the same time.
Flyover did happen, they were just at a weird angle and clipped the central part of the Cauldron and headed straight southwest.
I was in the Budweiser Party Corner, the flyover came straight at us and we could see them coming from about half a mile (??? really hard to tell distance there) away.
If you're really curious, it was the KC Flight Formation Team, which flies Van's RV kitbuilt prop planes.
