That's a fair point. I really think the only way we are going to develop an organic rivalry is to be in competition with another team for playoff spots and in the playoffs a few times. The NFL has 4 team and formerly 5 team divisions which helped develop rivalries. The rest of the leagues have enough teams that their is often a natural geographic rival. But, some of the rivalries have developed because of competition in important games such as the Celtics and Lakers. Since our closest team is 9 hours away, a natural geographic rival isnt available and I dont think St. Louis is going to get a team for at least a decade, if ever.
To be honest, I really, really want St. Louis to get a team. Until the other club hates us in some real fashion like we hate them it's just pointless. A derby factoring in the natural hate between the two metro areas and partly the Kansas-Missouri factor for some would just be the dream. Sadly it ain't going to happen anytime soon.
I've said jokingly, but half seriously, that if you wanted a great rival, put a team on both sides of the state line, put one in KU colors, the other in MU colors....
And then the K-State fans would be confused and wondering who the hell they should be rooting for. The lesser of two evils, in their minds, I suppose. Part of me wants a St. Louis team, but another part of me knows that would really cut into our fanbase in Missouri. And I'm still hoping that, while it would be a tough sell, that we could pick up St. Louis Scott Gallagher as a HG affiliate. A man can dream, right?
Unless Gallagher pulled a Delco situation with the Union, that could still happen as long as it's done before STL were to join the league...
The suggestion that Donovan is overrated is laughable. It doesn't even deserve a stat laden response. Championships, wins, goals and assists is all he's done. Not to mention three of the biggest goals in US world cup history.
There really can't be a choice for the lesser of two evils. It's like a choice between Gaddafi and Sadam Hussein. How is that possible to decide?
Truth is that St. Louis doesn't consider Kansas City a rival at all, basically in anything. Their rival is, was, and has always been Chicago. The funny part about that is that Chicago pays similarly little notice to St. Louis.
Thought this deserved video, if only to remind those poor misguided souls that think LD is "overrated". [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db53Q_PGGA4"]Every USA World Cup Goal - YouTube[/ame]
Growing up as a Cards fan I can tell you that the Cardinals view the Cubs as more of a rival and even the Reds a bit but not really the Royals. It is hard to be a rival with someone you only play once a year and doesnt impact your playoff probability. Sure there is some soreness over the World Series but they dont consider the Royals a rival.
Funny how he is so quick to defend or explain St. Louis... my stomach turns each time... i may just vomit on him in Vancouver or Portland and blame it on his so-called St. Louis fandom...
I don't know about other SKC fans, but I can say without a doubt that I personally can't stand Houston.
