Ug bad memories  (was at that game at Stadium of Shite embedded with the Sunderland supporters at the far end (but with incognito Geordie friends, wasn't going to turn down the ticket!)

PS No, I didn't throw the beach ball. ;)

Sunderland would be a good side if the season were 3 months long. It seems like they're competitive until about Halloween then the black cats walk under a mirror or something and they suck the rest of the way.

Oh well, here's hoping for a win today!

Why wouldn't Carroll start? No one hates Sunderland more (and he performs well at their house) more than that big Geordie.

The simple answer would be that we have better players than Carroll available. I wouldn't be unhappy if Carroll never started another match for us.

We've started fairly badly, and Seb's made a couple of errors. We're just not that good, especially with the ball.

As long as those better players are better than Carroll at Sunderland, then sure. Somehow I doubt that. I don't care if Santa Claus plays up top, I just want to win.

Very poor by Liverpool, so far. Can't keep the ball at all and headless chickens would be an apt desciption.

Suarez is the only player that can create space for himself...which has been a problem, and will be a problem today.

When Suarez is pressing a CB around the halfway line, there is absolutely no help from anyone. Classic Liverpool.

Charlie Adam, as I've mentioned before, is actually a decent defender in a 1 vs 1 when the opponent has his back to goal. It's just a shame that we don't defend well enough from the front, to allow Charlie to mostly have to defend like this. With our shit pressing/lack of coordinated pressing from the front, a lot of Adam's defending is 1 vs 1 when an opponent is running at him.

Our first good sequence of possession, as we're able to turn the Sunderland midfield and get the ball into Suarez's feet outside the box, only for Kelly to send a high cross into the box for Bellamy and Suarez to attack.

Why shouldn't we continue using this strategy when it's worked so well for the entire season?

    32nd minute

Bellamy runs with the ball, plays a pass to Suarez who is moving deep towards him. Suarez flicks it behind him where Kuyt has taken up the space Suarez vacated. Kuyt then plays the ball back to Bellamy just outside the box.

The move ended with a needless long-range shot from Adam, but it's nice to see those three players on the field at the same time.

Good, aggressive attacking. Good spacing, and constant movement into different areas, one and two-touch passing if possible.

Yep. I was trying to be nice in my criticism of his inability to complete any basic tasks as a midfielder.

I'll be less kind with Jose Enrique. He sucks. He flat-out sucks with the ball. He will never be Spain's left-back because he can't pass the ball to a teammate, and constantly loses the ball in 'bad' areas. He's the anti-Rafa signing in that regard.

He'd actually be really well suited to playing with a defensive, counter-attacking side that frequently uses long-passes into space for fast attackers. He would've been well suited to Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa from a few years back. He's probably best suited to players like Agbonlahor, D.Cisse, Bellamy, if they're playing as a striker.

This is depressing. We're a midtable side.

Same impression. Toothless attack for the most part. But I've been assured we have our best 11 on the field.

F*ck. Double ricochet off Pepe and Bendtner follows up Campbell's shot to put away the rebound from 4 yds.

    1-0 Sunderland.

Predictable match. Dominate possession, create no chances, give up goal. Wash, rinse, repeat.

We move to a 4-4-2 in 2nd half with Spearing playing alongside Adam, and big gaps immediately open up in front of our defence because, a) there is no coordination between the pressing of the forwards-midfielders-defenders, and b) because Spearing and Adam are not the most intelligent of footballers.

We must be up there as the most stupidly organised team, collectively, from coaches to players.

If not Carroll, then where is Gerrard? Charlie Adam is useless today.
