While reading a recent article on the Milwaukee Wave, I came across this article. Not good at all.... http://wisconsinsoccercentral.com/college/news/3631-uwm-mens-coaches-placed-on-leave
So...it's OK for UW-M supporters to get hammered and abuse opponents at Englemann Field, but it's not OK when the UW-M coaches remain sober while abusing their own players? Seems a bit like a double standard. Although with a 6-20-3 record, there might be an argument that the coaches aren't all that sober either.
Record means nothing here. This coach is accused of racial slurs, embarassing players openly with their academic records, etc. I can tell you that players have said that the coach is a tyrant who screams, yells, and belittles. UWM had the opportunity to hire real quality coaches (e.g., Jimmy Banks among others) and staying with its traditions. This is the bed they made for themselves.
A friend of mine applied for an assistant job and received an email that the search has been canceled. Sounds like a change is coming.
I hear by this week or next week at latest that there will be announcement. Very interesting about the search being cancelled. That does seem to suggest something... Whalley is a coach at FC Milwaukee (youth Academy club). Wonder if FC will make changes in light of his problematic behavior. Hopefully, they will think of the kids.
Are you sure? Christian Lavers, Whalley's sidekick at FC Milwaukee, resigned. I didn't hear or see an announcement of Whalley being suspended at FC Milwaukee. He was suspended at UWM but are you sure about FC Milwaukee. If so, good to see that the house is being cleaned.
Thxs. Milwaukee soap opera. Whalley and Lavers out of FC Milwaukee. What next? And Whally out of UWM (presumably), what next? It will be curious to see if UWM goes back to its roots (e.g., Jimmy Banks or some other old schooler). Coleman must be getting a kick out of all this!
Technical advisor for Elm Grove Soccer Club under Bob Spielmann. I think Gansler is enjoying semi-retirement. Can't see him going back to college coaching.
Personally knowing/being friends with Bob no way would he get back into college coaching. From speaking with friends who are alums I am hearing Sczepanski's name as someone a lot would like....either way definitely needs to be an alumni. They have enough good candidates.
What's Tony Sanneh doing these days? I know he has a charitable foundation he's pretty serious about, but has he shown any interest in coaching?
Running is youth soccere foundation in Minnesota. Seems to be doing well with it. So, not sure if he would even consider a UWM opportunity. We just have to wait and see if Whalley does get canned and then the fun begins.
UWM Alumni didn't like him 2 years, have seemed to have a grudge against him the whole time and are doing everything possible to ruin what good he has done for the program so far and moving into the future.
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Chris Whalley was fired. Assistant coach Ben Shepherd allowed to stay (but I assume it will be up to the new coach to decide that). http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/143999596.html
As soon as I saw the UW-Milwaukee thread, I immediately thought of both Jimmy Banks and Bob Gansler....
Don't laugh, but here's who I'd go after for AD: Sasho Cirovski. He's an alum, including an MBA. He's been around college sports his entire adult life. He knows a lot about fundraising and marketing, things he's been very good at in his time at Maryland. He's gotten to watch a high-profile athletic department up close and personal for 18 years or however long he's been at Maryland. He's good with the media. He's passionate (sometimes to a fault). He's a winner. Now, I have no idea if this is a career goal of his and if it is, if he thinks it's time leave the sidelines. I'm sure he still loves game day. But he's also a control freak and wants to be able to grow college soccer and as athletic director he has more clout to be able to influence pro-college soccer decisions in the backrooms of the NCAA convention. He may not be interested, but it's worth exploring to see if he is. And, you can bet the farm he'd make sure the school hired a damn good soccer coach.
A final footnote in an ugly chapter..... http://www.jsonline.com/sports/pant...sed-offensive-language-u656ji6-149319485.html
The excuses that Whalley make are "cultural," that is, he wasn't aware of the rights and wrongs of English culture applied here in the States. Then what the heck was he doing the couple years prior during his coaching at Lees-McRae College? I don't buy his excuses, he clearly has a problem. Any rumors as to who is showing interest for the job? Deadline for applying is May 8 but wonder if anyone heard anything?
